The nothing happens part reminds me of a quote from the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy: "For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen." -Douglas Adams,
...Look, when you specialize in fireballs, you begin rating them. Heck, Mythbusters has a 'scale of oopsies'. There is "So, we should probably leave the room and get cleanup, I broke a florescent lamp", to "Am I missing an eyebrow" to "So, we blew up someone's house and no one was in it", to "Kari is now a vampire, and three mytherns are dead." The latter was, fortunately, never reached.
One of the reasons why it's so remembered was that it was one of the clips used in the intro trailer for at _least_ a few seasons. I'm happy to learn the history behind it! :)
I love the many legendary, comical, quotes from the show... However, this one lives rent free in my phone's keyboard clipboard, simply because lots of content creators and even commenters will sell themselves short as being scientists: _"The only difference between screwing around and science, is writing it down."_ - *Adam Savage* [Mythbusters]
Adam has gone on record stating that the original quote was something that Alex Jacob, a ballistics expert they worked with, said off the cuff during the bullet skipping off concrete story. Adam told him he was going to use it on the show, and Alex said okay. Not correcting you, but I imagine that the original source of the quote is not as well known. Figured I'd pass it along.
I really wish that episode was easier to find on UA-cam. as an electrician I sometimes have to explain why motors, switches, light fixtures, wiring methods, are supposed to be explosion proof, and like you said, the most dangerous thing that happens is nothing. People always say “ been doing it that way for 20 years” That experiment at least showcases what can happen.
The "missing an eyebrow" moment still makes me feel good. Been there, done that. Not as dangerous, but close enough. And that feeling, when the mirth fades in half a second, is still alive in my memory. Thank you for documenting this.

The story was that he used a standard reaction setup to perform the "Hydrolysis of Water" experiment that separates water into its two components, Hyrdrogen and Oxygen, by using an electric current. He did this before demonstrating it to the class in a fume hood (with the shield down) not as a precaution but as Standard Practices. He then entertained the idea of reversing the experiment (The ReHydrolysis of Water) to show how water is formed by combining the two gasses and introducing a spark. He had forgotten that in this direction, the experiment is HIGHLY EXOTHERMIC. The reaction chamber (the tube) was blasted into shrapnel and only Standard Practices saved him from a trip to the hospital as the shield did its job and protected the experimentor. In hindsight, he stated, "it was only because I used the same gases I had collected to perform the rehydrolysis, that they blew up. They were in PERFECT proportions and therefore highly explosive. If I had used only half of the hyrdrogen, we still would have gotten water, just not as violently."
NileRed has a short of him igniting soap bubbles in his hand with the perfect mix of H2 and O2. Even with that little bit, he had to wear ear protection.
@@bubblinebee If you've ever done the experiment yourself, you know that the standard test for showing the presence of the two gases is normally,... 1 take the tube containing oxygen and insert a smoldering wooden splint into it. Adam Savage has been an idol figure throughout my life at this point. In the early days of Mythbusters, he was relatable through his persona and antics. After many winters, he shares his wealth of experience voluntarily, on a whole different level and through a completely different medium. Here I am, soaking it in. I FINALLY got the answer to a question I’ve been wondering for a long time! The question being, was the date he had on that day the same person he is married to now?
I love the word "producer" because it has so many meanings. From "whoever wrote the first check" to "project manager" to "we need to pay this person more" to "troubleshooter of strange problems" to "writer who can't be credited due to guild rules" to "guy who owns the IP" to "Frank needs one more credit to get in the guild and get health insurance" to "this is the lynchpin holding this crap show together" to "miracle worker." It's even more interesting because it takes very little information to figure out what end of the producer spectrum somebody is on. As ths video shows.
_Generally_ speaking, if the title is just "Producer" that person is doing real work in some way to get the show/film done. It's the "Executive Producer" title that can mean everything from the Showrunner responsible for the entire production to "this person works at the studio and has nothing to do with the show/film, but if we don't assuage his ego, we can't shoot".
FYI. Minor Fireballs are sizewise all according to the victim and also, THAT was not a very "minor" fireball according to all of us that have seen it in action
I spent years thinking how great it would be if you worked with the Slo-Mo Guys. When it finally happened, surprisingly, it was indeed great! Hopefully more opportunities for it can come up in the future
Love that you mention "that date was not my wife" and then clarify that they are still a good friend and part of your life. It's a good approach in life to know what when something does not turn out to fit where you initially expected it, you can re-evaluate and see if there are other just as valuable ways to include them. Whether it's a project that is not working out, or a relationship. You don't have to toss it aside and forget / give up on it. A little effort and thought, a change of approach and expectations, and maybe it will turn out different to how you first imagined it. But it can be just as special.
2:40 i was head nodding before you said it. I fear "nothing" like nothing else. And... i owe that to you guys in a great deal as it challenged "early (established) me" to think a bit differently. I've always been an adopter of other people's thought processes that work, but certain things were fixed in place by experience. Which is normal, i think. Then the show came along and as it started maturing and growing, it changed some very stable ground in my approach to things. Taking notes, repeatability, safety, this fear of nothing happening that may lead to early or late disaster, trusting or not trusting some things and more. Mythbusters was great! Even as a young adult going full time adult, it still shaped my neuron pathways.
MythBusters may have been reality television, but it stood far above the rest of that genre, at an unassailable pinnacle. Thank you, Mr. Savage, for everything you, Mr. Hyneman, and your crew did. Absolutely monumental.
The eyebrow episode was the first episode I watched. It will always hold a special place in my life. I could relate to it, because just that year I also burned my eyebrows off. I had a gas stove, and while spraying a pan with cooking spray it flared up and got my face a bit. I was fine, but my brows were not. This episode was also where I learned about the resistance of air and have used it in school with the Van De Graaff generators. Was a neat fact I told my teacher. "each centimeter is 10,000 volts". This created a bond between me and Mr. Bergdall that lasts to this day 17-18 years later.
Resistance soldering unit: settings 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 = nothing. 5 = arc welder, with solder and workpiece vaporized instantly. My eyebrows survived.
I find this really interesting because I seem to remember the point of the tape was a deliberate failure point to essentially let the fireball out when it happened, so that you didn't end up with plexiglass shrapnel everywhere and so that you could contain the air fuel mixture in the first place. The fact that you remember thinking that the fireball wouldn't escape lends even more evidence to the fact that nothing is the most dangerous thing to happen.
A guy I used to work with was testing an audio amp a customer had returned. He popped the case off and set about poking it with a multimeter, checking continuity on a few things, then he put power to it, and a capacitor just instantly blew. Just a baby one, maybe 35V 1000uF or something. We all swear the can from the cap launched straight at him and flew through the part in his hair. His wedding was the next day, and it would have been fun explaining a face-wound from that projectile.
I had an experience with static electricity once that literally blew my mind (figuratively). I was staying in a place that had sheets that I think were nylon (they weren't cotton) in the dark I moved in the bed and the static ripped across the sheet like a wave for a brief second. It didn't hurt but it was a surreal experience i've never forgotten.
I, and I think I speak for many others, sure do hope that you, Gav and Dan... hell, even Bobby... will get together for shenanigans AT LEAST once a year!! I really do miss TV Adam 😊 Another collab I'd LOVE to see Adam do, would be with Scott at Kentucky Ballistics!! Gav and Dan just did their second collab with him. Scott is such an amazing and _HILARIOUS_ guy, that I think Adam would get along with him so well! Plus, he has such a vast arsenal at his disposal, I'm sure there are things he might want to try but might be concerned about safety, and could benefit from Adam's wealth of knowledge. And the opposite... I'm sure Adam has some things he might like to do but couldn't with Mythbusters! Anyways, I've sewn that seed... Hopefully it bears fruit! 😁♥️
Honestly, I'd love to see him re-shoot the non-dairy creamer cannon in slow-mo with them. That whole bit was amazing, especially with the frightened reactions of the team as they realized, "Maybe we were a little close there" XD
@@pyrocious That would indeed be something to behold in super slow-mo! I think, though I might be misremembering, Adam has mentioned that even he was terrified, after seeing the footage.
It may seem axiomatic to Adam, but 6:05 to 6:23 is a refreshingly concise and straightforward way of describing a crucial part of almost all leadership and human endeavors, and what is, as Adam says, more and more lacking in the way humans now do things.
One of the most dangerous things to happen during an experiment is nothing. ~ THE Adam Savage Just as legendary of a statement as "Am I missing an eyebrow?" / "well...there's your problem"....and the phrase "minor fireball" Thank you to ALL Mythbusters for continuing to inspire my science brain.
I once waited on Adam at Sarabeth's on central park south. He was so very nice, and tipped well. I didn't tell him how much I enjoyed watching him because I always feel it inappropriate to fuss over a celebrity when theyre just trying to do normal stuff.
I can't think of many physical battle scars from the "nothing is happening" trap, but I've experienced it many times in the audio world. The worst thing that can happen when you're setting up powerful amplification and speakers is, like you say, nothing at all. People start fiddling with all the knobs, and inevitably end up leaving something all the way up, often resulting in an EXPLOSION of sound when the culprit (which 90% of the time is something stupidly simple) is found and fixed.
Up here in Maine in the winter we know static electric shocks. I have gotten big shocks. My wife is from the Philippines and her first winter here was shocking, pun intended,
My grandparents heated with a wood stove, so there was always so much static in their house. My grandpa and I used to try to sneak up on each other and give a shock to the unsuspecting person😂
Hi Adam. 😢Iv grown up in Cork city Ireland and watched the show from the first episode back in 2003. When the show finished years had passed I had grown up and with you being apart of my often daily entertainment I knew I was really really going to miss it but now with you on UA-cam it doesn't feel so final. Thanks so much for all the great laughs Adam.
Because show intro montages included them, "am i missing an eyebrow?" with "i reject reality and substitute my own" quotes are burned solid into our memories.
You’re one of the few people that can accurately and believably use the term “minor” before the word “fireball”. Because if anybody would know the difference, it would be you.
Yep, UEOs - UnExploded Objects are super dangerous whenever you do anything with substances that go boom. Even such a small thing as a squib round in firearm can seriously mess you up if things go wrong enough.
Or a hang fire due to an old or degraded primer. A "click" can be very dangerous, even when all that's downrange is paper. Degraded propellant is also tricky stuff. It's supposed to burn at a specific rate, and the action is specced to that. But old, degraded powder may burn really slowly...or it may burn extra fast. Neither is good.
I can agree on the hair. I have/had a similar problem. when I was younger, my hair would form what looked like a helmet on my head, and that's when it was orderly. if I had missed a day of showering or it was a hot and sweat day, my hair was just ragged. now that I'm 30, I've let it grow out a few times and it has been much more manageable. I had it about 5 or 6 inches when I cut it last, and I only really did because a heat wave hit, I was knocking a rotor off a hub and the sweat was just raining off of me. I cut my hair and I was so much cooler in temp. I might let it grow back out over the winter and cut it again next summer
Just last night I saw the Simpsons episode where Adam and Jamie cameo'd in. When Milhouse wants to test the cellphone in a gas station myth, I brought my hand to my eyebrow.
Would a high-speed shot of blowing up the cement truck take away from the whole thing? I feel like not seeing the high-speed shot added to the sheer scale of the explosion. 1. Truck 2. *BOOM* 3. No truck.
That BOOM sounds so unique and so unlike any other kind of explosion i have watched or heard that the memory of it is completely burned into my mind. I absolutely agree with what you say. A slow-motion view of it would lessen its impact!
When working with things that go boom and don't get boom, that's the scariest moment. When you interact with that, will it go boom? Will go fizzle? That unknown is pants defecating terrifying.
My first paying job was McDonald's in '97. At the time, alcohol-based hand sanitizers weren't anywhere near as common in regular homes as they are today, so that job was the first time I'd ever seen or used it. Me being the pyro that I was/am, I immediately smelled the alcohol in it and immediately started thinking of ways to light it and play with it. My first experiment was to put some in a cup and light it on fire. When I was done with it, I went to put it on fire by blowing into the cup. I was smelling burnt hair for a week after that due to the fireball that came out of the cup when I tried to blow out the flame. Years later, a friend and I got a job at a gas station working overnights. When we were bored one night, we took some bags of hand sanitizer outside, cut the nozzles off the ends of the silicone tube, and wrote words on the parking lot with the sanitizer and then lit out on fire. I wish I had pictures or video of it because it was so cool seeing a blue flame smelling out words on a blacktop at night.
That was the moment that I got hooked on the show. When I saw Adam’s smile disappear was when I felt the show was not scripted and the reactions are real. Plus I felt Adam and Jamie had the odd couple feel like the 70s TV show.
I would love to see the OG cement truck big badaboom in proper high speed. That thing just went of in an instant, would love to be able to see what happened.

Good morning Tested team.
That was the first episode I saw and I immediately knew you were going to be my heroes.
MythBusters may have been reality television, but it stood far above the rest of that genre, at an unassailable pinnacle.
Thank you, Mr. Savage, for everything you, Mr. Hyneman, and your crew did. Absolutely monumental.
Glad I found this channel. Adam seems like a good guy
Probably the reason that the eyebrow incident is so memorable is because of it's insertion into the intro for numerous seasons.
I love Jamie's posture as he slaps Adam; it's so casual and unassuming compared to the exaggerated look of Adam's face sloshing around
The vacuum motor and the lip was funny too
I had an experience with static electricity once that literally blew my mind (figuratively). I was staying in a place that had sheets that I think were nylon (they weren't cotton) in the dark I moved in the bed and the static ripped across the sheet like a wave for a brief second. It didn't hurt but it was a surreal experience i've never forgotten.
I've never had just the name of a video make me laugh out loud before.... bravo, sir.
I, and I think I speak for many others, sure do hope that you, Gav and Dan... hell, even Bobby... will get together for shenanigans AT LEAST once a year!!
I really do miss TV Adam 😊
Another collab I'd LOVE to see Adam do, would be with Scott at Kentucky Ballistics!!
I must have listen to adam telling this story about 10 times and tbh I will listen everytime great story :)
A friend of call that: Workshop blindness. When something potencialy dangerous doesnt do any harm for a while and you start to ignore it
Tested was absolutely a communal exercise. You couldn't have done it without a trusted crew.
And supportive producers. How very unusual.
It may seem axiomatic to Adam, but 6:05 to 6:23 is a refreshingly concise and straightforward way of describing a crucial part of almost all leadership and human endeavors, and what is, as Adam says, more and more lacking in the way humans now do things.
My family and i still say "Am i missing an eyebrow?" whenever something unexpected happens with fire
That moment and "I reject your reality and substitute my own" are things that live rent free in my head and I still quote the latter with friends 😂
It hits differently in our "post-factual" world than it did back then.
I always thought it was his lip sucked in the vacuum motor 🤣❤️🤣🤣
One of the most dangerous things to happen during an experiment is nothing. ~ THE Adam Savage
Just as legendary of a statement as "Am I missing an eyebrow?" / "well...there's your problem"....and the phrase "minor fireball"
Thank you to ALL Mythbusters for continuing to inspire my science brain.
Great video sir 😊
I once waited on Adam at Sarabeth's on central park south. He was so very nice, and tipped well. I didn't tell him how much I enjoyed watching him because I always feel it inappropriate to fuss over a celebrity when theyre just trying to do normal stuff.
"Am I missing an eye brow" is somthing I quote on a weekly basis
I remember seeing that episode on TV when it aired.
“That’s all _you_ need to know about how that date went”
Then I’ll assume it went very well.
I legit think abt that line every time I open a hot oven and all that hot air hits me in the face so thanks for that lol
The popular memes that came out of Mythbusters can be mostly laid at the feet of them being repeated a lot in the title sequence or in clip shows.
"Very minor fireball".
As if you weren't complacent enough already :D
I can't think of many physical battle scars from the "nothing is happening" trap, but I've experienced it many times in the audio world. The worst thing that can happen when you're setting up powerful amplification and speakers is, like you say, nothing at all. People start fiddling with all the knobs, and inevitably end up leaving something all the way up, often resulting in an EXPLOSION of sound when the culprit (which 90% of the time is something stupidly simple) is found and fixed.
I had a coworker show up without eyebrows one day . Lost them working on his 68 Firebird . That was a good day for everyone in the shop but him 🙂
That A-B video title testing going hard! I think this is the third title I’ve seen today?
Up here in Maine in the winter we know static electric shocks. I have gotten big shocks. My wife is from the Philippines and her first winter here was shocking, pun intended,
My grandparents heated with a wood stove, so there was always so much static in their house. My grandpa and I used to try to sneak up on each other and give a shock to the unsuspecting person😂
I did basically the same thing lighting an old gas grill one time in my early 20s lol
I was 14, not the best day at school the following Monday.
Nice Japanese Tested t-shirt
tesutedo!
Because show intro montages included them, "am i missing an eyebrow?" with "i reject reality and substitute my own" quotes are burned solid into our memories.
I've had some good static shocks from wrapping pallets.
It's the volts that give you the jolts.
And the amps that puts out your lamps
Would you consider redoing the foil ball challenge
“That everything YOU need to know… (about my date missing an eyebrow)”
Wait what, I’m intrigued I want to know more
Part of why its "weirdly famous" is because it was part of the title sequence for awhile
“I reject your reality and substitute my own” is my favorite quote
It hits differently in our "post-factual" world than it did back then.
The "slap" was a great episode.
Just last night I saw the Simpsons episode where Adam and Jamie cameo'd in. When Milhouse wants to test the cellphone in a gas station myth, I brought my hand to my eyebrow.
Adams shirt says tested in katana. I hadn't used that knowledge in years and was curious. I chuckled when it dawned on me what tesutedo was...
Would a high-speed shot of blowing up the cement truck take away from the whole thing?
I feel like not seeing the high-speed shot added to the sheer scale of the explosion.
1. Truck
2. *BOOM*
Great conversation piece for a date though! How did that happened.
That was the moment that I got hooked on the show. When I saw Adam’s smile disappear was when I felt the show was not scripted and the reactions are real. Plus I felt Adam and Jamie had the odd couple feel like the 70s TV show.
I had to stop the video for a moment and contemplate the phrase “only a minor fireball”.
"It took me seventy episodes", "I was lucky enough to spend seventy/sixty...eight episodes" NICE...recovery.
Have you changed lav mics? If so what are you using in this video it sound diffrent, in a good way.
Love you in nj Adam !!
I remember that episode clearly!!! Yeah, blew off an eyebrow, but was worried the top of his head.
I would love to see the OG cement truck big badaboom in proper high speed. That thing just went of in an instant, would love to be able to see what happened.
I always wondered how the date went heheh :) 😊
