- WBA Super Middleweight Champion and Minneapolis fan-favorite David Morrell Jr. defeats Kalvin Henderson by way of fourth-round technical knockout.
WBA Super Middleweight Champion David Morrell Jr. (7-0, 6 KOs) delivered a bruising fourth-round TKO over Kalvin Henderson (15-2-1, 11 KOs), thrilling the fans in his adopted hometown.
“I’m excited,” said Morrell. “Thank you everyone for coming out to The Armory. I’m just happy, man. I’m happy. I’m so excited every time I fight in my new home in Minnesota. I made this place my home.”
Competing in his third-straight bout at The Armory, Morrell gave his fans what they came out to see, stepping to Henderson early and often and putting his opponent on the defensive. Morrell showed a dedicated intention on attacking his opponent’s body, racking up a 26-3 edge in body punches landed, before mixing it up with hooks and uppercuts.
Henderson was game for the challenge, hanging on the ropes and slinging counters to try to deter the charging Morrell, but was overwhelmed by the punching accuracy of Morrell (37% to 11%). Late in round three, Morrell broke through for the first time, connecting on a right hook that left Henderson visibly hurt on the ropes.
“We knew that he wanted to come out strong like he did, but we wanted to show that his punches weren’t doing anything,” said Henderson. “We were picking off most of those shots. We were trying to wear him out, and the game plan was working but he landed some shots and the referee called it.”
Morrell continued to swing aggressively throughout the final moments of the round, although Henderson was able to withstand the punishment and stay on his feet until the bell rang. While Henderson made it out for round four, Morrell remained patient until he found an opening and landed his right hook, hurting Henderson again and eventually forcing referee Luis Pabon to waive off the contest 2:35 into the frame.
“I want to thank my trainer Ronnie Shields, who did an excellent job today,” said Morrell. “That’s what our game plan was, to be concentrated and if I didn’t get him by the end of the first round, I was looking to get him in the later rounds.”
“I’m a fighter at heart and I compete so when he stopped the fight, I was upset,” said Henderson. “But I understand, the referee is just doing his job.”
After the fight, Morrell declared his intention to face the best at 168-pounds.
“It’s David Benavidez, it’s Caleb Plant, it’s Anthony Dirrell, it’s whoever wants to get in the ring with me,” said Morrell. “I’m ready for any of them.”

The defense is the best it has, you'll see, I'm Cuban and I know him, he beat Olympic champion Julio César de la Cruz as a 17-year-old boy, only they are adapting him to being a more competent boxer.

When Morrell shells up & moves forward in a straight line he gets hit. But when he jabs, feints, leans to the side & attacks from an angle, he makes it look easy.
I think it shows that he can fight both ways. He either trys to walk you down and eat the punches or he can show off his amazing defense and footwork. But guys with a lot of power seem to love to walk down opponents.

@@elonlove343 Morrell's approach to boxing reminds me a little of a young Julio Caesar Chavez, especially from Chavez's fight with Edwin Rosario, & his junior lightweight days. He just needs a few more distance fights to build up his stamina.

@@tyhijames89 I don't think Benevidez fights Morrell now that Canelo has signed that 3 fight deal with the PBC. Benevidez won't want to risk missing out on a Canelo fight by losing to Morrell, which is very possible. Hoping I'm wrong though, because Benevidez/Morrell would be a great fight.

How did announcers misread that first round?
If he wanted to get off the ropes he could have. The game plan looked obvious, at least to me, as he took some shots from morel and you could almost see in Henderson’s body language like “that’s all you got?!” Because after that he sat on the ropes and made no attempt to evade he let Morrell tee off on him and started to look for counters.
Heavy hitter knockout artists are difficult for counter punchers because all it takes is a good placed shot from them to put you out so a counter puncher has to be a lot more careful about purposely taking a punch in order to hit with a counter. You might end up waking up staring at the ceiling before your counter even lands 😂

I get what you're saying but why be a defensive counter striker when you can be an offensive one ,like Mike Tyson or Loma ,because the opponent is a power puncher instead of you slipping on the back foot to counter slip on the front foot that way even if you do get caught the timing of the punche will be off and he didn't get the chance to fully extend his punches because you're moving in with you're hands up ,on the back foot of you get caught you get caught at the nd of the punches which means more damage and you fingting on the front foot you dictate when your opponent throws because you're controlling the distance ,it becomes easier to time and slip punches like that .

At the last round Hendo can throw big power punch and even stunned Morrel with his left hook to the Jaw (17:10😊) and Morrel rapidly goes to high guard. Morrell open his Chin so much and put down his right hand and not defend well his chin with his right hamd. He almost got paid by Hendo with the Left hook in the Jaw..

After David Benavidez's win over Boo Boo, a lot of comments were mentioning this Morrell guy. I'll be the first to say I haven't been following boxing like I did before, but I know a hype job when I see one - and I am sorry to say, Morell is a hype job. There is nothing special about him except his padded record. You all saying he's the next great star but all of his opponents have been C class fighters at best. This dude won't get past Plant, Benavidez, Charlo, and not a snowballs chance in hell against Canelo. Heck, I bet Boo Boo beats him. Let's see him fight someone decent before we start giving him the boogie-man title
Tell that to Aidos Yerbossunly. They didn't even post the fight after what happened to him. Aidos was rated #1 in the WBA and knocked out the only guy to ever to go the distance with Morrell. Aidos was in a medically induced coma for 2 weeks after facing Morrell.
@@bolebole161 Aidos is no where near the same level as the guys David has faced. Morrell still has a lot to prove before he can call out big names. He has no fan base and doesn't put butts to seats for him to warrant a big fight. When that's the case, Morrell needs to get a big win against a name bigger than Aidos, as of right now, he's just someone that wants to skip the line to the top.
@@racequad9 David Morrell won the WBA World Championship after 3 professional fights. People questioned why he was given the opportunity so early and he's proving it. Aidos was very good. Aidos just had too much heart for a guy that is supremely skilled in the ring. It's because Aidos is that good that the fight was allowes to continue. If you question the pedigree of Morrell then you clearly aren't watching his fights or don't watch enough boxing to understand how good he is. In my opinion, Morrell is the best 168 and 175.
@@racequad9 Again, Aidos knocked out the only guy to go the distance with David Morrell. Aidos legitimately earned his #1 spot. If the fight was ended early, Aidos still has a boxing career. I don't think you watch much boxing otherwise you'd understand how good Morrell is and how good Aidos was. Try to find the whole fight on UA-cam. Because of what happened they didn't post it. If you watch the entire fight you would appreciate how skilled both guys are. It's also a reminder of how brutal the sport can be.

Morrel speed is not impressive against Benavidez, he didn't fight a caliber opponent..its too early to exit his boxing career against benavidez, thats why they're so careful in picking less competitive opponents.
He looks great against opposition like Henderson but if he fights that wast against the likes of Benavides he gets countered all night. DB hits harder faster and way more volume than DM. And let’s not even mention Canelo if he fight him and nelo finishes him ppl will say he was too young and look for a small the negatives as to why he beat him. I’d still love to watch these matches I wanna see DB vs DM and canelo fight them too I wanna see all the possibilities
Morrell leaves himself wide open with all those power punches he throws. Benavidez will shock him, he’s not ready. Henderson looked like a statue out there barely any movement.
When you got the head movement like him and the stiff jab and cross you don’t need all that movement he wasn’t getting hit he blocked or slipped evrything

Benavidez has faster hands and a more effective jab. DB fast hands will be a factor when counter punching. Another major factor will be DB body attack. Morrell's chin hasn't been tested by the likes of a Benavidez. DB is going to take him to school. DB by knockout in the second half of the fight.
Morell is a better match up for Caleb plant, Benavidez too much for him. Hell gas out in a few rounds against ben.
Morel has improved a lot from this fight. Seeing him in person here I wasn’t too impressed but he did he thing on the Tank vs Garcia undercard.

The fight was well stopped, the rest was going to be a massacre. It was clearly seen how he lost all reflection. The referees follow the boxer's gaze when they receive a major blow.
Morrell need to improved a lot more he missess a power punch many times and throws weak punches with literally no power especially in toe to toe fight.. If he fought an elite counter puncher he could be get knock out or down when throwing so much combination.. If he need to beat Canelo, Plant, Benavidez etc he need to be morecrafty and used his boxing iq more.
