Life is an intense sci-fi thriller about a team of scientists aboard the International Space Station whose mission of discovery turns to one of primal fear when they find a rapidly evolving life-form that caused extinction on Mars, and now threatens the crew and all life on Earth.
I’ve never been in love with this movie but that is genuinely one of the most brutal on screen deaths I’ve ever seen.
He’s just choking to death… Ryan Reynolds’s being buried alive is different tho
@@The-Legend-of-P his insides are being blended. Something alive being inside you that’s stronger than your hands grip is a recipe for violent death

@@The-Legend-of-Pand as Calvin moves around it is destroying his organs.
One aspect of this film that I absolutely love is the attention to detail depicting the micro-gravity environment. So many sci-fi films try to 'hand-wave' freefall away with artificial gravity gizmos and magical tech. But Life, like in The Expanse, floating around in freefall is just a mundane reality of working in space.
What??
What, what, man?

@@TheReaper569what part didn’t you get?
The moment he took off his headset, he knew at that point that he was about to die.
The truly terrifying aspect of this movie is that they were dealing with an enemy that was truly invincible.
Every life form going to end of life. But this just a cinema. In cinema everything is possibble but an alien has a god mode or it's just a cheater.
Agreed. I don't like Mary Sue aliens.
This alien f*cked up all Mars.
Anything that could survive on Mars would likely be invincible when introduced to the smorgasbord a human host and planet like Earth provides.
@@shacktimeMars is freezing cold, not warm. This was strictly plot armor. There's no reason why it would adapt to temperatures like this.
Imagine killing off Ryan Reynolds in the first quarter of a movie.
i see this as an absolute win
a lot of films/actors would like to have a big actor they kill off early on. its a selling point for the film that "big actor" is in the film. Like when Drew Barrymore was killed in Scream in the first 5 minutes etc.
it gets people talking, it sells the movie, etc.
That's good because you don't know who's gonna win
Sure. It can happen. Brad Pitt died in his cameo appearance in Deadpool 2.
I mean dude but that shit hit hard as fuck lmao, I think they knew exactly what they were doing with that one
Some people say “oh well the alien only attacked once it had been hurt. It got zapped initially. The mouse bit it. Rory used the oxygen candle and then the flamethrower.”
At first I thought that was a bit silly but upon another watch I think they might be right. Rory decides he wants to “kill this fucking thing” but I feel like Calvin was just cowering in the corner and he could have at least TRIED escaping first.
The other option is that at that size (and intelligence) Calvin might have still been intimidated and scared by the humans, but as he grows and realizes he can use them to feed and become smarter and stronger, that is when he becomes an actual threat
Yeah, those people were like "If humanity just does everything right from now till the end of time, then Calvin wont get moderately frightened and have to wipe them all out."
2:17 Love this mostly non-verbal communication between Reynolds and Gyllenhall.. Reynolds is definitely upset that he shut the door on him, but understood it was the right move.. Just a 'Yea...'
I just don’t understand why he didn’t head towards the door after he got the fire pushed it away.

@@glo2fr823 The reason Rory couldn't just bail after saving Hugh was because Calvin could've easily escaped between the time of them pulling Hugh out of the lab. Miranda even says that Rory can't be let out of the lab until he's put back into the Firewall One containment box. Even with the permission to kill Calvin, the whole reason Miranda was in the ISS in the first place was to ensure the Firewall containment procedures given by the CDC, and whether he was dead or alive, Miranda would've made sure he was placed in the proper containment box. The only way Rory would've made it out alive in this situation was if he'd managed to successfully capture Calvin.
If anyone want to know just how gruesome and painful that death was, just imagine an hostile alien slithering down your throat which lead to your digestive system. The esophagus is the tube that connects the back of your throat to your stomach. Food and liquid go down the tube when you swallow. The lining of the esophagus is sensitive. So just imagine that thing going down your throat and ripping through all your digestive organs in the abdomen, including the stomach, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, intestines, and urinary system. Just pure organ destruction. And why wasn't Rory screaming in agony? Well, because his vocal cord was already destroyed.
All the while Calvin was eating his insides.
How you know it went down the food hole and not the air 1 ? Given that Rory doesnt scream and starts spouting blood out, its more likely Calvin was feeding on his lungs and heart 1st.
If it was the stomach which has pain receptors he would be screaming and not choking on his own blood yet or so quickly.
@@yofolkdem1256 Good point but we'll never know exactly where Calvin went anatomy-wise. I would assume mouth to stomach first. Remember that the pharynx, or throat -- or "food hole" as you call it -- is the passageway leading from the mouth and nose to the esophagus and larynx. The pharynx permits the passage of swallowed solids and liquids into the esophagus, or gullet, and conducts air to and from the trachea (windpipe or air hole) , during respiration. Either way, Rory is sustaining major damages from the throat since Calvin is large enough to damage both the food hole and the air hole lol oh, and let's not forget Calvin is a foreign species from outer space. We're not even talking about how potentially poisonous this creature is.
@@dantaboo like you said we'll never know but Calvin has shown it can alter it's musculature much like an octopus, if it wanted it could force its way down the trachea.
I was just speculating thanks for entertaining my foolishness.

There's nothing to say it was unharmed by this. Also people don't really understand what flamethrowers are because they mostly see them in movies or video games.
Real flamethrowers throw fuel at a target so that it catches light. It then burns itself. This movie flamethrower is basically just a hot gas torch, which at best would need sustained contact with the creature to burn it.
Yes in reality Calvin here is quite small and would struggle with much heat, but we really don't know much about what it's made of. If you fired a torch like that at a rubber sheet for 20 seconds, not much would happen either.
Yes, thank you. I won't speak on open flame in such an environment, I don't know enough about that, but this isn't some napalm throwing incinerator, it's a glorified bunsen burner. Who even knows what kind of aliens are out there or what they might resist. Maybe an alien from some small cold world would think it's unrealistic we can exist above -200C, who knows?
This flamethrower wasn't designed for combat. I wonder if this thing survived military m2 flamethrower

No. What aboutbio hazards and stuff. This thing was heavily contained for a reason. He was not just only physycally dangerous.
Notice how it was just petting the rat until the rat bit it. That rat had it coming
Yep exactly. That showed a lot about the aliens behaviour. Apparently it was only defending itself as it perceived threat from the humans.
I wouldn't be so certain. It seemed it was trying to get into it's mouth.... And we see later what happens shwne it does. People alway try to say it wa defending itself, but most of the crew just run, and it still tried to kill them.

Im over here wondering why they just took a whole ass minute watching it plotting its escape, preparing for it, then executing it. Like, tf...? Lol Even if you were skeptical of safety, its fucking trapped. No better time to float his goofy unconscious ass out of there. They had more than enough time.
I get what they were going for with the movie, but this is ridiculous as a whole lmao. Like there were many instances where Ryan Reynolds could have slipped out of the capsule and they could have blown the entire capsule away and sent "Calvin" off into the void to die on its own lmao. This is also assuming it wouldn't simply die from the "incinerator" being focused on its bare "body" for several seconds. Which would at the very least incapacitate any actual life form in existence. This "life form" is still just that, organic material. Any organic material that is actively part of a living thing no less, would be severely damaged by that much heat. Not to mention, when "Calvin" crawled halfway into Ryan Reynolds mouth like that at the end, it would be trivial as a reflex for anyone to bite down as hard as they could and at the very least sever "Calvin" in half if not into pieces. The jaw muscle is one of our most powerful muscles pound for pound just like in most animals. Idc how absurdly "strong" (which let's be honest it's pretty absurd for something of that size/weight/build to be any stronger than a jellyfish lmao) Calvin is made out to be, If it puts itself into such a compromising position as that it cannot possibly stop a jaw from clamping down on it. There's simply no angle of leverage it can possibly exploit to push back hard enough on a jaw to stop it from clamping down(literally the only motion a jaw is designed to do) by a person actively doing so while fighting for their life lol. If you think people mustering strength to lift cars and the like is a lot of power, try to imagine someone biting down with that same fight or flight response.
Why didnt they open the door while he had the flamethrower ? He could have used the flamethrower to keep the alien away while they opened the door for Reynolds. Pretty stupid stuff.

I think one thing that people are missing, outside of the shock and the bite, are that Calvin never tries attacking Rory (Reynolds), until he attacks it with the oxygen candle.
Calvin broke the one guys hand after the shock, and almost seems to be petting the mouse until it bites.
When it grabs onto the leg, nothing is said by Rory that it’s squeezing, it’s painful, it’s breaking bones.
At this point, it may have been still trying to be ‘friendly’, and seeing if this human was nicer than the one that shocked it…
It’s an interesting concept for the movie, and one I don’t believe is covered enough, that what if it’s been acting in defence this whole time?
If Rory never attacks it, could friendly first contact have been made?
Imagine being ‘abducted’ from your planet, like Calvin was, and waking up to things you’ve never met before shocking you and biting you?
I believe most would act in defence and fear.
The movie explains that this is a highly intelligent life form, what could have happened without the initial attack from Rory?
I think you are right.
Calvin attack the 1st shipmate because he attacks Calvin with the lightning rod.
Calvin attack the 2nd because he attacks Calvin with the oxygen candle.
Calvin attack the 3rd(Commander) because she commands to imprison Calvin for 10,000 years.
Calvin attack the 5th because he transports Calvin to outer space with the escape pod.
4th? I forget the reason.
The reason it attacks is simply because it needs glucose to survive. Did the rat attack it? No but Calvin still ate/killed it. Calvin is simply feeding off of anything that has it, i.e humans. Since it has growing intelligence, it uses whatever means necessary to get more. This is why Calvin stopped David from jettisoning into space,so it could feed more on earth.
@@spike333s3 ok then why did it kill Kat? People are just reiterating the same old points. This thing isn't good. Yes it isn't necessarily evil but it's more evil than good. Kat did nothing and Hugh the first guy was only trying to save Calvin.

The critics are right: how could any living thing survive that flamethrower, other than in a script? That it was repulsed by a relatively harmless electric shock but could withstand the concentrated flame isn't consistent with the plot's own premises.
Bro how would you feel when someone wakes you up with an electric shock?
The whole movie is goofy if you try to hold it up to any real standards; most sci-fi is the same. That's not even touching on the more fundamental issue of using a flamethrower, which relies on oxygen as fuel, in a compact space shuttle full of compressed air. There's also the classic trope of "super smart scientists make incredibly dumb decisions because they're so 'enraptured' by their discovery", i.e. them just blindly assuming Calvin would be docile rather than taking precautions if it's aggressive. My favorite is just the ending...how unbelievably predictable it was that by "sheer coincidence" the safe escape pod would hit some debris and go hurtling off into space, while Calvin's pod just ever-so-conveniently dodges all of the debris while also apparently knowing how to expertly manipulate Gyllenhall's hands to land the pod. The list goes on: sci-fi is for enjoyment imo, and I would rarely, if ever, take anything in movies like this seriously.
IDK this scene doesn't bother me? A flame resistant animal? TBH he doesn't even directly get at it really, does he? Being woken up by a shock and dodging a small flame isn't enough to break my immersion
