  • Heading back to Plum Island, Mass. for a wonderful sunset shelling adventure. We'll find TONS of cool shells and admire some particularly colorful Scallop shells!
    Post Upload Note:
This episode was filmed in late summer/early fall of last year. The vast majority of beaches at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, on Plum Island are currently closed(April - August) to protect the nesting habitats of the Piping Plover shore bird.

I would love to see you do a collaborative video with Jaime from Plum Island Sea Cabin! I think you two would make a great video. Her knowledge of the area combined with your knowledge of shells, it would be epic!

I was definitely surprised to find that many on this day. Deep Sea Scallops are always such vibrant colors on Plum Island so it's such a joy when they are plentiful! Thanks for watching!

What I most admire about your vlogs is the fact that you appreciate the natural beauty in even 'imperfect' shells. The stains and the chips are pages in the book of it's life. I love that.

Definitely! Every bit and bob you find helps to make up the delicate beach ecosystem. Additionally, the deep water shells almost always wash up partially broken, so it's really cool to find even a piece!
      Thanks for watching!

What is the name of the background music you used for the second selection on this video, at 5:22? It's so moody and thoughtful, perfect for a sunset beach walk. Please let me know.
I am thrilled to find your channel! I must admit that, as a native Floridian, I wasn't really aware that there were so many beautiful shells that far north! I am very pleasantly surprised and eager to explore the Atlantic shore more thoroughly.
Thanks for the video and the education!

Glad I found your channel! I get lost looking for shells whenever I get the chance. I'm also very appreciative that you return the possible living critters back to the ocean, very awesome! Looking forward to more videos!

Hello! Unfortunately, I think that Moon Snail had already died, but it was worth the effort in the chance that returning it to the water could possibly have a positive effect!
      Thanks for coming along!

You go to so many different beaches. How do you know which beaches to go to especially since you seem to be all alone on the beaches that you are at.

Hi friend! I often don't know for sure, but to me that's the enjoyment of the experience! This place(Plum Island), is often great for shell collecting and beach combing. I know that because I grew up somewhat nearby and have collected shells here many times before.
Ironically, on this visit to Plum Island, there was another person walking parallel with me for much of the time I was on the beach, I just didn't catch them on film. I think they were collecting driftwood!

I went to Plum Island for the first time last month and it was amazing! I’ve been wanting to go back but I heard about bird mating season to where a lot of areas are closed. What part did you go to and what areas do you recommend?

Hello! A few people have asked about this also. The beaches are usually closed from April to around July or so to protect nesting Piping Plovers. You can find more about that here(www.newburyport.com/piping-plovers-nesting-season-brings-annual-plum-island-refuge-closures/).
I actually filmed this particular episode in September of last year - most of my trips to Plum Island are usually in the fall or winter. When the beaches are open, there are many great places to find shells, but typically the south end of the island(near Sandy Point) will provide the best collecting opportunities!
      Thanks so much for watching!

As of April 1 the majority of the refuge beach at Plum Island has been closed to public entry to provide undisturbed nesting & feeding habitat for piping plovers. A small section of the beach at Lot 1 remains open but seeing the observation deck - with no beach access- in the background of your video shows you were well south of Lot 1.

Hello Friend, this was actually filmed in September of last year - the beach was open at this time and actually pretty busy. The observation deck in the b-roll is actually Lot 5. Thanks for watching!
