Considering the money they spent on production, I'm somewhat surprised they weren't more historically accurate. Franz Joseph did not wear a blue robe lined with ermine and an ermine mantle at his Hungarian coronation; he wore a cape and mantle of cloth-of-gold embroidered - no ermine involved.
The producers had worked mostly in theaters, that's why. And just think about it, the people in this time needed harmony and outright kitsch. Most german films are like that. Nice to look at, humorous and very light.
As for me what bothers me the most is a simple thing as the fact that Franz Joseph not wearing facial hair, his distinctive side burns linked by a moustache, wich portraits clearly show he wore since his youth.

And I believe that even Russia would have become a parliamentary country if Alexei had lived to reign, but all the dreams and hopes of that time were lost with WWI! But I still believe that if these monarchies had resisted the war, we would have avoided the horrors that followed until the end of the century! With the Nazis and the Communists, a beautiful dream to imagine but shattered.
