It is 1940. The first transport of prisoners arrives at the newly created concentration camp Auschwitz. One of them is Tadeusz “Teddy” Pietrzykowski, pre-war boxing champion of Warsaw. The camp officers force him to fight in the ring for his and other prisoners’ lives. However, his every win strengthens the hope that Nazis are not invincible. Auschwitz officers notice the growing resistance. The confrontation with the authorities of the camp becomes inevitable.
‘The Champion of Auschwitz’ tells an unknown story of one of the first inmates of camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, prisoner number 77. During his 3-year stay in the camp, Tadeusz ‘Teddy’ Pietrzykowski fought over 40 victorious duels, becoming a symbol of hope for victory over Nazi terror. His on-screen history has been documented in detail based on archival statements of former prisoners of Auschwitz and the memories of the boxer himself.

I just watched this movie. This is the saddest movie I've ever seen. I haven't cried in many years. But this movie hit me really hard.

“If there is a God, He will have to beg for my forgiveness.” This is a quote etched on the wall of a concentration camp as noted by Andrew Eames, the author of Blue River, Black Sea.

Actually his name is Andrey Borzenko, soviet POW, boxing champion from Uzbekistan. His coach was American migrant Sidney Jackson. In Auschwitz his stat is: 80 wins, 0 losses. He took part in uprising, survived and returned back to Uzbekistan, became a surgeon and won several titles of Uzbekistan champion.

I don't know about Borzenko, but certainly, more than one boxer ended up in Auschwitz. Kapo Jakub of of Block 11 was another one. He also arrived in 1942 (I think.) There was only one Prisoner #77 and that was Tadeusz Pietrzykowski. I have a good friend who was in Auschwitz and was friends with him. Trust me, the movie is true and his family backed the movie. Also....there were no Soviet POWs until after Germany invaded Russia 1941.

First transport of POLISH prisoners (the camp was opened solely for the Poles) was in June 1940.

The Auschwitz camp was initially only for Poles. The first transport of Polish prisoners came from the southern Polish town - Tarnów. For the first 2 years the whole Polish intellectual elite was exterminated there. The European Jews started to be transported only since 1942, and rather to the nearby camp Birkenau.

Interesting plot, but horrible, horrible, wooden acting. The guards sounded like disney villains. It was almost embarrassing to watch. Long, drawn out scenes. Cheesy dialog. 4/10
