The jets really have to retire 33 someday. He was such a fan favourite and a truly unique talent. There’s never been a player like him and I doubt there ever will be again. Enjoy fishing big guy, you earned it!
We in Winnipeg didn't win a cup with him, BUT I'm thankful for his best years being played for us. Dustin IS the reason so many tickets got sold. No offense these players are set for life after about 2 seasons. Leaving 14 million on the table is not a big deal when you have made about 50 million already. Most importantly he didn't abandon Winnipeg for a better team or bigger money. He retired. Once a Jet always a Jet unless you are named Evander Kane.
Age, injuries, the physical and mental fatigue of the road over the long season, 82 games, plus preseason, now international preseasons, playoffs. He had done his thing, it became time for living. He followed his heart, great story, fantastic career, he made enough money, won the cup. He should be in HHF.
As a NYR fan, Byfuglien scared the crap out of me when the Rangers played CHI or WPG. I couldn't imagine going up against that guy in a game. As for his decision to leave the game for fishing, I totally get it. I wish I could retire and just fish as often as possible. Nothing but respect for this guy.
In early 2017 I had two consecutive surgeries on my lower spine. When I came out of the haze and fog of being under after the first surgery the nurse in the intensive care unit asked "how do you feel?" My reply was "Like I just took a hit in the corner from Dustin Byfuglien"... to which she laughed like hell. Big Buff was a joy to watch in Winnipeg all those years. He's definitely missed and will never be forgotten. All the best to him, hope he's enjoying early retirement. If anyone earned it, he did.
Miss him in the Peg so bad...would look Great beside Josh Morrissey on the back end of this years playoffs, I used to see.him talking to girls away from the team at the palomino club in Winnipeg and he once gave me a smile and a nod and that was a great night. I saw wheeler and the rest of the boys in the VIP section but Big Buff was off by himself mackin the hotties. Props to one of my very favourite players in my 46 years watching the NHL. All the times he rag dolled two guys at a time I was watching from where ever in the world I was and that was the most exciting games in the NHL for me no cap. Miss you Big Buff.....Peace and Respect from Vancouver!!
He honestly deserves to be in the Hall of Fame of his career wasn't cut short guaranteed he would have a Stanley Cup under his belt by now if he hasn't already oh wait he has NHL please put this giant man in the Hall of Fame it's been
Buff wanted his future and he saw it and he grabbed it. As heartbroken as he left all us jets fans, you can’t be mad at the guy for doing what he wants. Leaving behind 14 mill doesn’t matter either, I’m sure he and his family have a big enough bank account to dismiss that anyway lol cheers buff
My favorite player to never play for the Leafs. I only ever cheer for Leaf players but Buff was awesome. Total package. I'm glad he's found happiness. Hey, he likes fishing more than hockey. Great for him.
I remember Buff being more cautious and timid after the ankle injury alongside that concussion. Still came back for the playoffs and we’d have a cup if they didn’t hand the series to Vegas. Remember when Scheifele got a penalty for high sticking himself with Stone’s stick?
Buff was that guy. Love to see the American boys doing big things! Dude was the size of an offensive lineman. BTS is that guy! Dont know the man personally, but hes a real one.
Saw a bio on his early life, raised by a single Mom and chose hockey. Can you imagine the football coaches salivating over him as a teenager in high school. What made him so special was his speed and balance as a very big man. Impossible to stop. He made the other team honest.
in the 2010 playoffs, the flyers made an unbelievable run with chris pronger leading the way. He secondhandedly put phili on his back and bulldozed his team to the finals where they met the blackhawks. There is where pronger met dustin and completely got shut down and put an end to phili's cinderella run.
Never been a jets fan but man i loved Byfuglien. Was so upsetting to hear his retirement not once but twice 😭 Was a great player to look up to there’s not much if anything like him would’ve loved to see him in the league longer.
they def could've used him in the covid bubble in summer of 2020, if he had been avaliable to play in the qualifying round then they prolly would've beaten the flames and went to the regular first round
its insane, he played his whole career and didnt get a simple hit!!!! he just skate in a direction of a player and the player wreck himself in big buff.
I equate his story to Barry Sanders. With fame and fortune comes a price to be paid. They both walked away instead of paying the price that is expected.
This overly produced video completely over looks several major events leading to his retirement. I’m a Jets fan, and a Byfuglien fan. He was never comfortable with his celebrity status it seems and was a fairly humble guy. But he knew when to step up, and was always his own man. What this video completely omits is the untimely, recurrent, ankle injury that sidelined him indefinitely, and pushed him into retirement. There was controversy over the way his days in Winnipeg ended. He kind of retired without telling anyone, then wanted to come back and be paid for the time he was absent. I forget the details but it was sad the way it ended, for fans at least. No retirement announcement. No ceremony. No goodbye. He just faded away. Andrew Ladd is a class act too. Hope they’re enjoying whatever they choose to do.
He left at the right time, a few small injuries and age catching up was probably a good choice. Seemed like the fun guy to play with and the game and the coaches are probably way too serious these days.
Great job repeating the exact same thing and the exact same clips 6 times and making it seem like a video with substance lol. You forgot the cocaine bust and legal issues.....
Absolutely respect his decision, even though he left all that money behind, had some good years left. He had essentially did it all and you can't put a price tag on happiness. Also for how physically demanding his role was, he probably didn't want to risk injuring himself or take all that abuse if you don't have to. It's like walking away from the poker table while you are ahead is how I look at it.
Of all of the fascinating facts about Buff, my favourite is that he didn’t care about or really know about hockey. He didn’t watch the game or know much about players who came before him. He was just really, really good.
Big Buff was my daughter's favorite Blackhawk even with the star studded lineup they put on the ice. When asked why she just said he's a beast dad! And he continued to dominate after going to the Jets but still enjoyed watching him just laying it out every game. As an old beer leagues goalie we have one human that skates with us in similar fashion. About the same build as Buff and the heavy shot that knocks the cobwebs out like getting hit with a brick. I can't imagine Buff ringing one off my dome. I'd probably need a brain transplant 🧠 🔧. An exceptional competitor and warrior.
I would question his past. Luckily he doesn't have any issue with alchol or drugs (that we know of). That would be his business if so. There could be some sort of trauma like what happen to Fleury back in the day. I wish him good health no matter what his decision.

Only Byfuglien can answer whether or not the decision to leave hockey was right for him. Since he didn't come back to continue his hockey career, I suspect that the answer might be yes, It was the right choice for him at the time.
He was also tired of getting injured I remember him mentioning that on an interview the moment he joined Winnipeg Jets I became a Jets fan but when he left I was no longer a fan
