We in Winnipeg didn't win a cup with him, BUT I'm thankful for his best years being played for us. Dustin IS the reason so many tickets got sold. No offense these players are set for life after about 2 seasons. Leaving 14 million on the table is not a big deal when you have made about 50 million already. Most importantly he didn't abandon Winnipeg for a better team or bigger money. He retired. Once a Jet always a Jet unless you are named Evander Kane.

As a NYR fan, Byfuglien scared the crap out of me when the Rangers played CHI or WPG. I couldn't imagine going up against that guy in a game.
As for his decision to leave the game for fishing, I totally get it. I wish I could retire and just fish as often as possible. Nothing but respect for this guy.

Age, injuries, the physical and mental fatigue of the road over the long season, 82 games, plus preseason, now international preseasons, playoffs. He had done his thing, it became time for living. He followed his heart, great story, fantastic career, he made enough money, won the cup. He should be in HHF.

In early 2017 I had two consecutive surgeries on my lower spine. When I came out of the haze and fog of being under after the first surgery the nurse in the intensive care unit asked "how do you feel?"
My reply was "Like I just took a hit in the corner from Dustin Byfuglien"... to which she laughed like hell.
Big Buff was a joy to watch in Winnipeg all those years. He's definitely missed and will never be forgotten. All the best to him, hope he's enjoying early retirement. If anyone earned it, he did.

I, and probably everyone not directly involved in Buf's leaving the NHL, haven't heard the whole/real story. I remember talk of an off-season injury incurred while doing something that would've allowed the team to terminate his contract. Buf tried to hide it and act as if he was injured in training camp. I don't know the details, but it wasn't Buf walking in one day and saying he was done, there was more to it. Regardless, I loved watching him play, and wish he was still playing.

Big Buff was my daughter's favorite Blackhawk even with the star studded lineup they put on the ice. When asked why she just said he's a beast dad! And he continued to dominate after going to the Jets but still enjoyed watching him just laying it out every game. As an old beer leagues goalie we have one human that skates with us in similar fashion. About the same build as Buff and the heavy shot that knocks the cobwebs out like getting hit with a brick. I can't imagine Buff ringing one off my dome. I'd probably need a brain transplant 🧠 🔧. An exceptional competitor and warrior.

This overly produced video completely over looks several major events leading to his retirement.
I’m a Jets fan, and a Byfuglien fan. He was never comfortable with his celebrity status it seems and was a fairly humble guy. But he knew when to step up, and was always his own man.
What this video completely omits is the untimely, recurrent, ankle injury that sidelined him indefinitely, and pushed him into retirement. There was controversy over the way his days in Winnipeg ended. He kind of retired without telling anyone, then wanted to come back and be paid for the time he was absent. I forget the details but it was sad the way it ended, for fans at least. No retirement announcement. No ceremony. No goodbye. He just faded away.
Andrew Ladd is a class act too. Hope they’re enjoying whatever they choose to do.

I am no fan of Tkachuk. However, if I were a GM of a NHL team with a small size of brain, I would rather have Tkachuk than Msthews if the goal was to win the stanley cup.
Individually, yes, I do believe Mathews will be a better STATS players ( more numbers on paper)
However he is one dimensional and his stayle of play thus far proved does not work in today's Playoff Hockey.
Also, as a Royal Canadian Lad cheers for Canadian Based NHL teams, looking at today's NHL, Florida Panthers is in a better position to win the cup.
NHL has been trying to 'Grow' games in places Hockey has no business ( California, Texas and all of Southern United State)
Yes. Of all players forementioned , I would take Tkachuk in a heart Beat.

    • @beyond_thebench

Jets better retire #33 sooner rather than later

Hmmm, 9 minutes and we learned absolutely nothing. So he's fishing? I could see that from the clickbait. Unexpected return to the ice? Where? In a beer league? Zero explanation.

Byfuglien owed his fans an explanation of why he deserted them. He owed them that. He hurt a lot of people, not by walking away - that’s his right- but to just leave them hanging and wondering why? that was the height of rudeness and self-centeredness no matter how you cut it. As far as this article goes, it totally sucks. You praise him endlessly and keep hinting you are going to explain what happened as if you had inside info but you don’t. Anyone who is a Jets fan knows nothing new at the end of this article. Winnipeg Jets were on the cusp of greatness when he left and the organization has never recovered.

Just another whinny sore loser. Get over it and remember the good times he brought. He doesn't owe you a thing and he has a right to his private life just like you.

I agree with you on the fact that this video does sucks. It doesnt show anything new. Whats even worse is that this video hints that Buff loved hockey. He didnt. He only played and went pro because he was good at it. It made him rich and his plan was to always play until he was done. Also a major fail that they didnt show any footage of him playing this summer with Hossa at Hossa's farewell game. How do you fuck that up lol Multiple players current and retired have gone on record saying that he doesnt even watch hockey and unless he played with them, knows nothing about other players.

If anyone is selfish it's you two Bozos. Unlike many overpaid, underperforming athletes he gave full value for his salary. He doesn't owe the Wpg fans an explanation anymore than if you two leave your jobs for a better future. I'm certain you haven't had concussions which have left those with more than one at severe risk of huge neurological problems.

Nobody owes anything to anyone for the decisions they make for themselves. Fans can accept it and move on, or they can whine about it, but he doesn't owe anyone anything.

Right. Anyone with nothing insightful to say just repeats themself. I hung on to the end thinking he would get to the point he kept alluding to but never did. Waste of time.
