- In this video I will show you how to apply filters, washes, chipping, streaking, dust, and mud to simulate a heavily - but not extremely - weathered modern vehicle. Hope you enjoy the video, and I hope it helps you out!
The tank is Trumpeter's T-62 ERA mod.62. I highly recommend this kit. - Розваги
As a kid I used to build tanks but I didn't have access to all those fancy weathering paints neither youtube tutorials unfortunately so my tanks never came out to a high standard. I might actually take up this hobby again because I loved it.
Thank you :) It is a great hobby, and I guess I'm still pretty much a kid, hoping I'll be able to keep doing this hobby for as long as I can! You don't need all of these products I used here; you can get great and very similar effects with only a couple of them.
Amazing video! I will certainly try some effects on my Leopard 1A5. Thanks for this amazing tutorial!
She is a beaut! The weathering came out great, top notch!
I'm also really impressed by the filters you used, really great effect of paint discolouration was achieved as well as the colour modualtion done on the ERA tiles!
Awesome stuff as always bro! Keep up the great work and happy modeling!
Cheers!
Thanks Brad! I'm really liking the effects these new AK and MiG paints and filters give. I'll have the final reveal up shortly.
Thx for this vid. It inspired me to go back into scale modelling after a break of 10 years. I used your techniques on a Zvezda t-72 and while it did not turn as good as your t-62, it still is a huge improvement over the last model I did. All in all I just wanted to say thank you and keep up the good work :)
hi mate, I'm using my mum's computer. your modelling is fantastic, you have learnt me a lot especially figure painting I've modelled for years but in the last 6 months I've taken it a lot more serious. I've brought an airbrush and a lot of weathering items etc etc and tools, but I really enjoy your videos, thank you
Great work, and I love the weathering effect.
brilliant work and a great video showing how the piece involves through the process.
Thanks Will! Evolution is the perfect word for describing the weathering process :)
Great information, thanks for sharing.
Very nice tutorial, Evan...gonna keep this one in my saved folder for future reference....thanks for doing this for the community...
Thanks! I hope it helps you out :) my pleasure
great video, really good tips! thank you for sharing your talent.
Thank you Dean!
Good work bud ,weathering looks great !!!
Thanks! I'm glad you like it
I had went through the same issue with painting the wheels and tracks separately! it was way nicer painting them off the hull but in the end, it didn't matter because they just got covered up! I had the T-62 w/Iraqi mod but changed it to soviet... yours came out way nicer! that's for the tip on the forum, a wealth of information
That is an awesome job on heavy weathering. I served in the infantry, riding along tanks or behind in their mud tracks and I was glad I wasn't going to be the one washing those after patrols etc... Once again Panzermeister, you have imperssive skills with painting. and you are very meticulous about your work, its all in your honnor. There is a ton of modelers that don't understand that little extra that will make a diorama or a model look from amateur to pro. Evaluate distance of scale and stuff...When I see big blue golf ball size eyes on an 1:35 figure, they didn't get that at this scale you dont see the eyes that detailed...anyways keep up with your good videos, I'm using them as future reference for my King Tiger Henshel. The base black primer is on as we speak!!! btw...you're a beast!!!
Thanks for the compliments! And thank you for your service :) Yes I often see figures as you say with massive eyes and stuff...bu it's 135 scale, so it's as if your looking at a person standing 20-30 feet away from you, so you'll never see the whites of their eyes or anything. Good luck on the KT and email me some pictures if you want; I just read your PM :) I'm uploading the final reveal now so I'll have some better shots showing the tank off much better.
Awesome work man- model looks great!
Thank you Justin!
Very nicely done sir. Thanks for the video, it taught me a lot.
Thank you David! Glad it helped :)
Great video, lots of useful tips. Thanks for sharing
Thanks :) I hope it helps
Unbelievale,you are really an artist🤑
I like it. Good use of filters. Like the idea of thinning products to turn them in to a pin wash. I do that with AK rust streaks to create a rusty pin wash. I will be trying the mud splatter mix. It looks very good. Interesting to watch others at work. I normally do pin wash then filter, then streaks and finally dust and dirt, but your method has worked superbly
Thanks Mark! Well I have very little oil paints so I have to work with what I've got to mix up some washes, but when you thin the streaking grimes you know it's basically now one of their washes. Alright thank for the tip I will filter after next time :) And when you'r doing the toothbrush-splattering technique, make sure you protect the rest of the vehicle because it goes everywhere! I had to do a lot of cleanup with thinners after the first layer, so I placed a piece of styrene as a shield; you can see it at 5:37.
Panzermeister36 good point. If anyone can make a mess it's me. Duly noted. Will be sure you cover up. Can you post some pics of the weathering. Keen to see stills as vids never do justice
Armour Empire You mean reveal pics? I'll have a vid up by Sunday I hope :)
Thanks for sharing. Very interesting video.
Thanks buddy!
Perfect weathering! the mud looks great and the washes... ehhm Filters* make the tank look more attractive.
Thanks Joe! Filters, washes, streaking grimes, it's all so confusing lol
Well done! U have talent, friend.
Excellent video! Thank you for sharing :)
Thank you for your comment :)
Looks fantastic!!
Thank you Ian :)
Appreciate your tutorial nice build!
Thank you
Very impressive man top work. learned heaps.
+Joe Finch Thanks Joe! Glad my video was helpful to you :)
+Panzermeister36 could you list all the paints washers ect you have used in this video. I think I've watched it twice now. About to watch a few more of your videos.
Wow! One day when I hopefully have more money and spare time I'm so getting into this! I have couple of ideas with Vietnam era tanks in my 'jungle terrarium'.
Petri Väätäinen Sounds awesome man! It's such a fun hobby :)
Nice weathering there, Enjoyable to watch thank mate.
Thanks man!
YOO you are an excellent painter i just started, and my BTR-70 looks a little plain so thank you for this tutorial.
Thanks! Is it a Trumpeter BTR-70? I've build their new one and its awesome :)
no its Zvezda i buy that brand, and its the BTR-70 with MA-7 turret but i kept it off to kep the old BTR style.
+Heavy Lobster oh alright :) that sounds cool!
Very useful video thank you so much!
Thank you for the comment! :)
Very nice video.
Mini Warzone Thanks :)
That armor so nice, i want to have it!
Thank you :) I'm honoured! The intro song is "Thin Red Line" by Tom Salta
looks good btw
+Shane Curry Thanks Shane :D
EXCELLENT VIDEO. Extremely helpful and I very much appreciate the time you spent assisting other modellers. I do have a question. IF you weather a plastic model, do you use flat clear spray. Or does this change the color of the materials placed on the vehicle? I actually use pastels and, the fake oil and wash? Thanks in advance for your help!!!!!!
Thank you! I always use a matte spray, never gloss since I find that makes the surface too smooth for the weathering effects I like. I've never had any issue with the matte coat altering the base coat, but I always apply it in two thin coats. I use pigments and oils a lot too in my weathering process. In about 12 hours I'll have uploaded a full weathering tutorial where I explain these in the video, so that may help.
That's great. I will watch all these.
Looks incredible! My only comment is that the ERA blocks look a little too uniform to me, perhaps this is just from the reflection of the light and would go upon matt coating!
Keep up these videos and I'll one day buy myself a model kit!
Thank Mosktan! The final reveal video with photos will be uploaded soon so then you can see it in nice lighting with a matt coat :)
NIce one!
when adding all the dusty substances to the wheels and tracks, did you spray some adhesive liquid onto the tank, or does the dust just stick on by itself?
Hongypingpong Pongy I did spray a coat of matte varnish over it at the end very lightly and from a good 5 feet away as to not blow off the pigments or flood them. The wet effects I did with the pigment and thinner mix that I flicked on with the toothbrush did soak in a glue down the dusted-on pigments too. But I don't dare touch the side plates!
Great tutorial! I definitely need to invest in AK Interactive products. What are your thoughts on the 'Ammo' paint system?
Thank you Jack :) Yup those Ak and MiG products are very useful and I like them a lot. I don't have any person experience with the Ammo stuff but it's quite similar to Ak and the like, just make sure you buy the Ammo ones with the yellow caps because the orange caps have mixing issues. Orange Ak are perfectly fine though.
Great tutorial!
but what are these filters?
I've never heard of or seen them before and I'm interested in their results over washes. any tips or info would be great.
A filter gives a different tone to the base colour. A lighter filter will make a faded effect, while a darker filter adds some warmth to the tank. It's like a tint but it's not a very necessary technique.
Hey Evan quick question hoping you can help me out on the next stages after painting ,for example I have just finished building the tamiya T62a and i have primed it in valego black so I will be putting base colour of Russian green on then applying a wash all over then applying decals and then any minor tools and machine guns that need painting .do I apply a wash again after decals are on ? How do I achieve dust effects ? Is that just a really thinned down buff colour ? Thank you in advance ,Neil
Put the wash on after the decals. As the decals are kinda part of the paint, they would be weathered as must as the rest of the vehicle. A wash will tone them down a bit. Paint then seal then decal then seal then weather then seal :) Well that's what your supposed to do, but you don't have to seal all those times if you're using washes that don't react with the base paint. You can achieve dusting through airbrushing on a thin tint but I prefer pigments. Here I used AK Interactive's 'Dust' pigment, but whatever works for you! Make sure you test out the dust colour, and build it up with many thin coats rather than one monster one; you can always add more paint, but it's hard to undo it! Hope this helps, Neil :)
Well done tutorial. Will save this one =)
Question: Do you "fix" the dust and mud effects? How are they not affected by the washes and filters?
orangelion03 Thanks :) I put the filters on before the pigments as otherwise the pigments will get coloured by the filters.
I gave the tank a coat of matte varnish sprayed from about four feet away at an upwards angle so the spray of varnish will curve down and settle onto the model rather than spray over it. This way you don't lose much pigment. If you just blast the varnish on it as you would a layer of paint the pigments will get flooded (really toned down) and/or blown off. I also do about three very light coats of the varnish rather than one heavy layer.
Another 'also' is that I didn't actually spray the varnish at the sides or rear or front of the tank; I just let it settle from above. I rarely handle my models so I'm not worried about the pigments getting rubbed off. Instead the matte was more to eliminate the shine from the washes and filters.
The wet effects I did with watered-down pigments and the AK products also helps to attach the pigment as it will seep in and fix it on...but don't rely on this to protect the pigments from handling though; it just helps to hold them on.
Hope this helps :D
What was the two colors you used for sponge chipping and brush chipping ?
Do you seal the tank between steps? I'm specifically referring to when you applied the wash after the pigments (6:50)
+Ryan Young I did not apply any sealing coats to the model. I kept that wash away from the pigmented areas, though I probably should have done the wash before them. I know how all the thinners for the products I use can react with each other so I apply them in an according process. For example, my enamel thinner will react/re-thin the oil paints I use too, but my oil thinner won't react with the enamel paints I use. So I always put on the enamel products before the oils, and there isn't an issue :)
Hey, can you explain me with more detail the part when you applied the mud with the tooth brush at 3:17, did you just put some pigments on the brush? or you also used some kind of thinner to make it liquid to apply on the model kit?
I just poured out some of that AK dust effects into a little pallette and then flicked it on. It's already a liquid product
With engine oil stains, fake mud and washes like you use, do you have to "cut" the solution/paint with 50/50 thinner? What product would you suggest.
It depends on the product, but usually not if it's AK Interactive or Wilder, and probably Mig AMMO too. You usually want those products a little thicker than something like a wash, so they're often good right from the bottle. Same goes for a wash; the manufacturer aims to thin them down to the right level for application. Just make sure you mix up the jar really well before you apply it.
Ok that's great still watching you videos.
I can't wait to weather my Russian T-62 mod.1962 in Afghanistan. I will probably try to add more dust rather than splattered mud.
There's a group on Facebook called the T-62 and T-64 research group and they have a lot of pictures of T-62 in Afghanistan :)
how did you make/get hold of the reactive armour?
just finished my T-62 and could not find any anywhere.
majestic land squid The armour came with the kit! It's a Trumpeter set; a very good kit as are all their T-62s. I did an in-box review of this one in case you're interested in getting it. The ERA blocks were well engineered in the kit and are not that hard or annoying to put together.
What color chipping should I use on a "panzer grey" painted tank, I'm sure you know what Pz grey looks like, but it's a very dark grey. Also what is a good wash or filter for that color. The color I have is a Vallejo wash specifically for pz grey. It's almost black!
Panzer grey is a fairly dark grey with often a bit of a bluish hue. I usually mix it from Black and White Tamiya paints to get the grey and then filter it blue. A dark wash on it would be good, so your Vallejo one sounds perfect.
Okay that's great.
Fantastic video Evan. Ivan. Is this why you like Ruski tanks, cos you almost have a Russian name? LOL. Yeah, great video and a super nicely weathered tank. Just the right amount of weathering unlike my first few efforts which look like theyve been salvaged from a bog but I wont make that mistake again. Less is more. You only need a tiny tiny bit of weathering powders to go a long way.
Thanks Stevie! Well I do like the StuGs too as you know, but T-34s are my second favourite. Most modern tanks have those perfectly applied camouflages that are the same on every tank so you have to mask a lot, they have far to many flat surfaces and very little surface details like tools, boxes, vents etc., and plus you can't really get away with weathering like this...so I went for the really un-modern T-62 for this GB lol so I could do what ever I wanted. The result is just like the photos I found of these in Syrian Rebel use. You should see the first panzer II I did...so much rust, chipping the crew couldn't achieve with a sandblaster, and mud up to the turret! But it was damn fun doing it :D
Ivan you say...well I went as a WWII Russian Commissar for Halloween last year. (You can get away with anything in Canada!) My English teacher who's incredibly knowledgeable in everything WWII-related calls me comrade Ivan to this day lol
Hehehe. Thats so funny. What a coincidence.
+Panzermeister36 How did you go about acquiring the parts for the costume ? I am quite interested as I want to try and be a Russian soldier this Halloween... cause we can get away with every thing in Canada.
Basile James Bizarre.....this was like 6 months ago!!!!! LOL. You crazy Canadians, eh!
I've found that SHARPIE pens are outstanding for adding depth. Anyways still watching your videos. Have you ever constructed a Trumpeter model? I love building 1/16 scale models. But, man $250.00 for a plastic model is insane.
Hello again Glenm :) Yes I have built a Trumpeter kit - this kit is actually a Trumpeter one! They're very good kits for sure.
Do they have most of the inside like; engine and crew areas?
Glenm Houston It depends on the kit. This one had no interior but I have a BTR and BMP-3 from them that had full interiors.
Wow. That's quite interesting. I want to purchase the pzkwIVb.
What's the best way to remove a small area of paint?
Lacquer thinner and extreme care
Ok thanks. Paint got globbed up on some hatches.
отличная модель ))
Thank you very much!
)))))
It is I, who is the Panzermeister.
You seem to be more of a Paintermeister.
Thanks!
When you wash a vehicle, do you pretty much cover the whole tank or just a lot of it?
You can do both...either a "pinwash" where you just apply it around details or a "flood wash"/"overall wash" where you apply it over everything and then afterwards use some thinner to clean it away from the flat surfaces, leaving it just around the details. I always do the pinwash technique.
I think I'm going to try the flood method. At least the model looks like armor and not tupperware. So during the pin wheel method you just create depth around, hatches and stuff? Thanks Glenn
Glenm Houston I show how I do the pinwash in my latest tutorial here at 9:56
ua-cam.com/video/nIIExRWTC3g/v-deo.html
That's awesome thanks
what do you use to thin the AK interactive streeaking grime?
Jay Tick Just the usual AK interactive thinner
Hey Evan took some photos for you to have a look at of my latest paint and weathering of the russian T62A tank how could I send them to you ?thanks neil
neilyboy79 Sure thing Neil; I'd enjoy seeing some pics! Email me at panzermeister36@gmail.com
I wish there were a list of the filters and washes u were using
Atomic Astronaut I'll do that in my upcoming videos! Thanks for the feedback :)
Panzermeister36 wow thanks bro! 😁 you will never be forgotten!
Atomic Astronaut well I make the videos for you guys, so I always enjoy hearing what you all have to say :D
Panzermeister36 👍🏻 good bro
Panzermeister36 I couldn't find any dark tracks paint or pigment, do u know where some are? Or don't they sell it anymore? And how do u put like, I think it's a clear coat? And how do u put it on? And how much?
song at the begging?
what kit is it mate?
+Shane Curry It's Trumpeter's "T-62 ERA [mod.1962]" ...a really really nice kit to build, actually! I loved it; I'd actually say it was the most fun I've ever had building a kit. I highly recommend any of Trumpeter's T-62 kits. I did a review of the kit here: ua-cam.com/video/1DW95h6rvWs/v-deo.html
Good stuff old mate I got one a few years ago but didn't realise that it would look that nice finished
Have a good one from Sydney Australia tigs
Shane Curry Thanks :) Greetings from Canada too!
How much usually a professional build costs?
Do you mean how much the kit and products cost in total, or are you talking about a commission build?
i mean the commission cost plus the kit and products in total
Well I've never done one, but usually they say basically you figure out an hourly rate for your work, then figure out how many hours it will take to build and paint and weather and everything, and then also add the cost of the kit. Kits can take 20 hours or 50 hours or more...so it entirely depends. You're probably looking at like 100-200 bucks (assuming a $50 kit) but that's just the guess as I've never actually seen a number.
Thanks for the reply Sir, i just got curious about that. THUMBS UP
+Stronk Komrade thank you!
The T-62 ERA does not have the turret side boxes, they are only for Polish or ex Czech vehicles
I know, but Syrian vehicles are a mess of parts so I added them as well as extra fuel tanks on the fenders too.
that music is from HAWX
Great game.
why are you talking to quietly and mumbling?
+andromeda673 Because I film at three in the morning when everyone else is asleep
+Panzermeister36 me too- though I have yet to make a video, I listen to and watch (and model) at the same hours.
You're out of order with your techniques.
Lol there is no set "order". You can do whatever you like if you're happy with the results you achieve. The way I weather things allows me to do the whole thing without any sealing coats.
