When you live 90 miles away your not coming for a 70quid sign Paul’s spot on
As an Autojumbler I'm not surprised that the prices for memorabilia are coming down. Prices have been silly and we all knew that a correction was due, it seems that it has finally arrived.
As a car boot seller
Signs and memorabilia are falling in price
Trying charging more than £10 and you need a defibrillator for customers😊😊😊😊
Need to bring back auctions where the public can attend. Simples
More money. Doing it this way.
They have already stated elsewhere logistically it's impossible because they operate on a industrial estate with other companies operating from there so it would be a massive health and safety issue with thousands of people turning up.
@@travelling_stephen So they hire somewhere like a race track where it isn't an issue, but I was surprised that they use volunteers, why not pay them if the need them not short of a few bob that lot.
@H4rleyBoy so what about cost!! etc etc
@@travelling_stephen as said they have plenty of money and they can charge an entry fee.
money is tight lads
You could do a separate on site Thornton Dale auction for memorabilia and just do cars at Pickering ,then people could bid and collect the same day
Could you let the public back in, they can bid on a item take it away there and then also help out the spending local community
Good point made about taking it home with you and not having to arrange and pay for delivery
I think Paul has a good point. When you attend a sale you will always pay a bit more becsuse you are there and you get the auction buzz! When you bid over the net/phone it's a clinical transaction ,
there's little emotion in the transaction 😢
Be a little more pragmatic, only accept items with a minimum auction lot price of £100 or accept them with no reserve ensuring everything sells.
Phoning for an an extra few pounds just isn't cost effective.
I tend to think that you would do better to just stick with cars and trucks and perhaps just a little bit of high end memorabilia the cheaper stuff is best left to car shows or car boots my thoughts for what they are worth.
Better to be in the auction room with a bacon barm and a brew than a remote auction, lacks the atmosphere.
Great insight Derek & Paul. I think the the reason is as Paul said they are are not there to buy in person, so could take away. I know it's put me off, as as much as I like a trip up to see you, there is the additional cost. Could you consider going back to how it was? Thanks James
The problem with the old memorabilia and signs is, I believe the buyers for it are dying off. It's the same as the pre war cars, the values have dropped considerably because the older buyers are not there anymore. Younger buyers are looking at and more interested in the 50s and 60s items now
Spot on.
Agreed..that’s how it works.
I am in Australia and its not much different here.
I'm not so sure that buyers for old signs have died off, surely there are still younger buyers for them furnishing their man caves etc? Probably more a lack of spare cash at the moment?
@@zm321 You may be right on memorabilia but perhaps not on vehicles.
Concentrate on vehicles, memorabilia surely too time consuming!!
Things will only sell for what the buyer wants to pay and auctions are a good indication of that.
I have a lot of property investments exactly what I was watching this review
The market sets the price not the seller or the auctioneer !
The cost of living crisis is biting on these sorts of discretionary purchases.
100%
Can't wait to come along again to the bangers & cash live in August....was a brilliant day last year on the Sunday but attending on the Saturday this time 😊
Take the reserve price from lower value items, make them sold with no reserve! Some of your competitors have a no reserve below £5k
Was about to say the same thing, maybe not as high, but at the point it pays to do the post sale leg work.
Derek, you might not have heard this saying......"It's only worth what someone's willing to give." 😀
Great video 📹 fellas any thing is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay it is sad but that's the way of the world 🌎 take care fellas and stay lucky and healthy 👍 keep up the good work 😊❤
In my opinion prices went really silly during COVID 19, as people were stuck at home and built man caves and bars, then filled their walls with enamels. Same happened with the price of beer pumps and pub memorabilia, they were about treble the price they are now. I also think prices would be higher if the doors were open to the public, bid, pay and collect in one fell swoop.
My thoughts exactly. People are now out and about and spending their money on other stuff. Used car prices are also tumbling as people are getting back to a normal lifestyle and new cars are becoming available again.
You need to have the punters in the room. You will sell.
Remote bidding is detached from the room.
As a person who has been buying from auction over a decade in the room people bid more .
The market has changed, just like brown furniture
It’s good that prices are coming down gives everyone a chance, think prices would be better if they could be purchased by being at the auction but understand fully it’s something that cannot be done now because of how popular you chaps are now.
Your cars sold are 'genuine', how about just chopping repro stuff so people have more confidence?
No repro ,no reserve below £100 , 10% auctioneers discretion and sub-contract out courier delivery / postage ?
bring back live auctions
The great thing about your show is it reflects the current market across the board. Love how the film crew still try to make money with out success.
happening all over, not much money about now. love the show
The Dolomite went ballistic!
The best way for memorabilia is to change the rules and all entries below a certain figure must be no reserve.
The Triumph Dolomite was not immaculate. I looked over it carefully and rust was about to erupt. I would have bid 5k maximum. The end price circa £17k was absolutely crazy.
Well done Paul ... 🤘
Sadly with the way the UK is going, I can see a bust cycle, the boom was a few years ago. But keep up the good work.
Why don't you put no reserve on signs then it cuts out all the wasters and doesn't block up your premises with unrealistically priced memorabilia
Money isn’t tight, the oldies just need to wake up to the fact that nostalgia moves on! 80s and 90s is the new “classic” and furthermore hardly anyone under the age of 30 gives a toss about cars at all, let alone classic stuff.
So many auctions not just cars doing online only. Live audience present gets best prices and fewer provisionals.
Money is tight, but you need the punters to be allowed there, to bid.
A 3.5hour drive for me, I’d buy.
Ont Net nah. No chance.
Especially if you still have to make that 350mile drive anyway just to pick up your purchase.
Well I have to say I'm really happy with my little ST70 monkey bike. Caught a glimpse of Paul but sorry I missed Derek and Dave. 😢
You didn’t buy my old st70 last month with the kickstart needed did you? 😄
@@GarethHarland-rj9ds no,a different one. It's complete
People are frightened that labour will get in and take there money
Great show lads, wish you could show more cars on the show and do more episodes. The bangers restoration team sure do like spending and losing money 😂, good show though
You both need to have microphones next time.
It was a very obvious difference.
Maybe you could get some wireless ones?
But an interesting insight.
Thank you ;)
Paul doesn't seem as enthusiastic about it all as his dad is!!
end of a long 3 days John 😅
You should have no reserve price on anything under 100 pounds.
Stick to classic cars and present them the way all the better auction sites do
Surprised the Black Shadow didn't go for a lot more.
The old boys bought the enamel stuff for crazy money, they are now realising the next generation don't relate to old Woodbine signs.
I've noticed since coming back to England a few years ago that people are so tight with their second hand used stuff on FB Marketplace , fussin over 5 or 10 quid. It's ridiculous.
an item is only worth what people will pay , not matter what your estimations are , it doesn't matter what any item was worth say 2 years ago , houses are a typical example , the prices were hyped over years and now they are rediculously high so they are not selling as they used to
I am sorry to say Derek things are only worth what someone wants to pay... if there is no-one wanting to pay the asking price...then its overpriced... and as with investments prices can and will go up or down..for no good reason
my weekly general auction is no fun any more.no people mostly online
At the end of the day anything is only worth what someone's willing to pay!
Paul talking sense
Come on people whats a fiver!! Make life a bit easier for Derrick he try’s very hard for his customers.
Things are only worth what people are prepared to pay.
Exactly you plan your Journey hopefully calling in two place's on a 90 mile journey, That is what i do ,But facebook marketplace is the main Culprit with no fees and how would I find Stuff if it was not for Ebay ,Marketplace , With free postage is a big winner I'm afraid, 2 Roadless tractor wheels £20 And 90 miles away after work leaving at515pm Collected 3 Drawbars 36 miles from home passing the Second Farm Entrance made £10 On one Drawer and cost of fuel with Trailer £35 in the fiesta Back by 11.15pm job Done The 2 wheels and tyre's worth £600 just for the new Rims 😊 fitted Straight on, The Seller just had to Help Handle into the Trailer on his yard and just wanted Them Gone 👍
Dont do provisionals on items under £100.00. Sold or not sold. Also, re repros its buyer beware. Sold as seen.
Only small signs are reproduced. If you only buy the big stuff you know it's real. I wish they would repro the 6,x4 or bigger signs but they don't.
There’s a cost of living crisis
on your website for past auctions does sold mean sold or does it mean provisional
sold 👍
Do you charge for packaging and use a courier for the memorabilia etc?
They do not deliver any memorabilia, you have to collect
Tell the bidders the reserve is gospel.
worth what people are prepared to pay.buy silver and gold instead
Repro items of any description kill prices on genuine bits. I'm in the diecast models game and the likes of Atlas repro Dinky Toys are killing the genuine items. Plus of course the older buyers are dissappearing. You ask a 35 / 45 year old what a Dinky Foden lorry is and they haven't a clue, modern issue Corgi 1:50 scale Scania trucks are a different matter.
how do I get to see the auctions on my laptop
you can watch the auctions on our website on the day, we are working on a UA-cam livestream for all future auctions though and we will update our social media channels when this is sorted 👍
@@DTMathewsons thank you very much for getting back to me kind regards jd
The cost of living has gone through the roof, i think classic cars and the memorabilia is for the chosen few now unfortunately
People have no money anymore in this country
Possibly like the model train market the potential customers are quite literally dieing.
The next generation has little interest in history, probably 1990 is history.
It’s the economy - we’re screwed.
its generational with memorabilia in my opinion? people get older and die so the market will decrease as youngsters are not interested in old stuff. it will only get worse as far as prices go and it will be like it was years ago before the internet when you could pick stuff up for pennies. im afraid the silly season may have passed. good in my opinion as people who are really fanatic about classic cars and memorabilia will be able to afford to buy again.
Stop selling junk and stick with classic cars you should listen to how Brightwells showcase their classic cars.
Mid week auctions hopeless
People have Run away with there Reserves and your guys fees are pushing people away.
I think Paul's right about the memorabilia and people being there in person ... is there any way you can get back to audience/in-person auctions again? Or is that definitely gone forever?
In general though I think people just don't have the disposable income they maybe did a few years ago, or if they have then they're hanging on to it in order to protect themselves against more difficult times. As a result, the price of many items are dropping, with just a very few stand-out items making daft money ... we're definitely in a "holding or slightly decreasing" market just now, again except for the odd stand-outs, and the usual exceptions, like many 70s and 80s Fords ... when decent-but-nothing-special Cortinas and Capris are making £20k-£40k you have to ask yourself when the market is going to "adjust itself" in the same way it has for memorabilia.
Also, can you give Paul a mic too? Can't always hear what he's saying. And thanks again - really enjoy watching the auctions :)
It would be better if all Automobilia was no reserve. They would all find their true value, flush out the motivated sellers and make life a lot more straightforward for you guys.
During covid when people had spare cash and wasn't afraid to spend it. Prices on everything was ridiculous. I know some of the rare enamel signs are sought after but c'mon? The repros are good in a garage, shed, fence whatever? Sherlock Holmes with his magnifying glass won't knock on your door calling you a cheap skate. Memorabilia on everything price wise is a joke. People putting patina. (Sorry rusty or rotten crap) in an advert means it's worth another 300% and I for one have had enough of it tbh! Unless you got cheap RS whatever? Then give me a ring lol
I only buy repro enamel as that's all I can afford, it's just as good as the originals in my opinion, far cheaper, and less of a worry if you're unfortunate enough to be visited by someone who decides he wants them without asking!
Looking at Paul's long day if you get a buyer and seller arguing the toss over a fiver i think hed chuck the fiver in himself😁
It’s right your selling to much tack get on with selling cars that’s what your best at take a leaf out of other auction houses. Think your losing track at what your best at.
Price of post brexit food, fuel, vets, dentists, and holidays, means people are counting every penny, just look at growth in food banks.
Hard times for majority, limited amount of disposable income today.
Your usp is your garage car autions😮
Like Paul says, doesn't matter if you're ringing back to sort out a provisional that's £20,000 or £20, it still has to be done, and for very little commission on the small value items, which is a real burden on your time to do it all. Perhaps you need to have a minimum value limit on the memorabilia to make it worth your while?
Smells of greed .to me!
Older signs have absolutely no meaning to younger buyers.
Markets change ,tastes change .
everyone's struggling, the glory days have gone.
The golden rule your first bid is your best bid
Cansel reserves on memrobilia
Lower the price of beer while your at it...
Congrats on getting Series 10 confirmed on U&Yesterday. Can you see the company getting any bigger/how do you keep it a manageable size? Also why do some workwear shirts have JCB logos? Apologies if you have already covered this.
Great insight as always 👏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it Tom
I love visiting Kirmington - North Lincolnshire to pay my respects to a cousin lost on Operations But I really want to visit this Incredible Place . Thank you for allowing us to see you Guys . Mike C
The reserve on items below £100, is mad. Surely, if sellers insist on a fixed reserve, to cover the telephone time contacting the parties a fixed payable amount (10%) of the reserve is payable if it doesn't make reserve and the seller stays fixed. Payable before the next auction or return to seller. Should get rid of the silly argument of £5 difference. No one will choose the fixed reserve, knowing they risk 10% if it doesn't get to reserve. Just a thought.
So nice to see that Matthewsons sell an array of eclectic memorabilia. It gives the show a little diversity and punctuates the storylines on the main vehicles being sold.
Just selling one car after another would be monotonous.
Just a suggestion why not start an on line shop. Everything not sold goes on line at a price if sells buyer pays for shipping on top. To chase up provionals is costing you money.
I think Paul is spot on, about the Memo' Time for a rethink. That apart keep on knocking them vehicles down. Delivery charges et al are a small percentage, where as the Memo' is probably many more times the buying price.
has the Covid tax now gone? here in Australia one of our major classic auctioneers Shannons have stopped auctions altogether.
People are probably buying memorabilia to try to make a few quid selling it straight on at a car boot sale, so don't want to spend much and guided by their own experience as to what shifts and what sticks.
Wrong way round isn't it? You would buy at car boot sales where buyers don't realise the value of items and then sell at specialist sales like Mathewsons?
@@zm321 Have to pay commission then though. If people are selective in what they buy it could work either way.
@@lawrenceholden5716 It could but automobilia is far more likely to find it's true value in Mathewsons than at a cbs.
I think the C19 distorted the markets, you must have seen a spike when people were stuck at home? Cheers Mike 🇬🇧
Memorabilia should be in a stand alone.
Need to do ‘No reserve’ on items under £100
Economy is so flat in the uk. I used to buy UK classic cars and resell them in Ireland, until Brexit made import taxes high. Now that Brexit has deflated UK economy, classic cars in UK are so cheap now that despite import taxes i.can noe resell theae cars again in Ireland where market remains strong
Same here in Cyprus (EU) we have to pay 19% VAT plus 10% duty and other charges on all imports from the UK. And what with the shipping cost it's just not worth buying cars from the UK anymore. I bought some new car parts in the UK for my 1949 MG TC last week, and the VAT was £443, although of course I only pay the 19% VAT/10% duty in Cyprus which was €543. So the UK lost the £443 VAT. The UK must be losing billions in VAT receipts since BREXIT.
Brexit killed a lot of businesses.
What I like about these guys is that when the market changes they adapt - it’s the only way they have survived and will continue to thrive
Is one of the problems that there are more auctions as collectors are dying so there are more stock available and less buyers.
