  • In this video, ‪@absoluteunitmedia‬ and I head to a few bodies of water in search of some spring Musky. Of course when you are fishing with big shiny baits and the Musky aren't cooperating sometimes you run into other species along the way. Enjoy the video as we boat Musky, Pike and a surprise catch!

Been goin after musky on the east side of the state. Could you prep me a bit for handling under the gillplate? I’ve got the right net, leaders, equipment but want to make sure I’m not harming these things on the way back in

Hey man. Thanks for the comment and glad to hear you have the right tools and are being conscientious about proper handling. There's two ways to handle a Musky.
The first is don't even put your hand near the gill plate. Instead put your hand under their throat and your other hand can grab the base of the tail. You see Musky fly fishermen hold Musky this way and honestly that's the safest technique for you and the fish.
The second method is to flip the Musky on its back while it's in the net/water and slide your hand under the gill plate while keeping the back of your hand against the fish. You will feel the lower jaw bone and you can lift it from the bone while supporting with your other hand. It's best to have someone show you how to do this but after a few catches and trial and error you can get the hang of it. Good luck!

I was wondering if you guys fished together. I knew you were both in the western part of the state.

@predxt0r234 I would say if you are new to Musky fishing watch my most recent video on "how to catch a Musky." It's a thorough breakdown of everything you need...most importantly proper tools and handling techniques.
In terms of a setup the new piscifun 400 is very reasonably priced and a great reel. A st croix Musky mojo rod is a great $200 rod and will last. You could always go for a okuma evx 8'6 heavy as that's closer to $120
