I mention in the video that the keyboard cable wasn't long enough - this should only be a problem if you're fitting some c64c keyboards to mainboards with the connector in the top left of the mainboard. Some c64c's had very short keyboard cables. Your mileage may vary!

Makes 1984 not seem so far away!! C64 was my first computer, Atari 2600/7800 not withstanding!! Mom bought the whole setup from Sears, including 2 - 1541 disk drives and a stand alone color monitor (the monitor lasted me into the Sega Genesis/Nintendo/PS1 era of gaming)… the great old days!!
Thanks for letting me relive and remember those glory days with your channel!! Such a great place!!
Black and gold looks fantastic. Absolutely checking out plexilaser for my homebrew build. Nice work. #buildac64
Hey! You're here? I was thinking about your computer too. Would be cool to build a case for it.
@@lockymcgee6525 I've been thinking about it. Backplane makes it a bit tricky.
Individual Computer, also Germany, produces C64C cases from original Commodore moulds, also in clear.
There is also the Mechboard 64, a quite expensive new keyboard. There were several projects to reproduce the keycaps, but currently none seems to be active.
Well done! Impressive. It looks pretty darn cool!
It looks great, congratulations!
Well what more can be said? This machine is simply stunning visually and technically. A masterpiece on a modern take of a retro machine. Bravo.
Thank you, you’ve helped me pick my uni electronics project
Glad I could help!
I really want this C64 PCB. I want to start collecting old computers and making soldering projects and this looks a great way to start both goals.
Wooow!!!! This is so cool!!!! Brilliant vidéo 😃😃😃😃 You should find a small snake cable to hide the adapter.
This looks great, brings back so many cool memories
I think this is my favourite thing you've done. Looking forward to seeing how far you can take the 'newness' over time. Gotta get a nice new mechanical keyboard for a start! #buildac64
What a legendary computer the C64 is that has so huge fanbase and community after all these years. And there are people who still build C64s at home! No kidding! :) #buildac64
Very interesting watch, certainly I would find myself spending many hours building a unit, how much I would end up using it afterwards is debatable but wouldn't be for lack of wanting
Well sure. I know what you are thinking. My SixtyClone is in its box, and I rarely use it. But then it will last longer. I only have to power it on two times a year. But it is awesomme to me, because I build it.
Great Video. Look forward to more of the same, or similar.
I have a case like this in clear acrylic for my build, had the same idea of not wanting to hide the pcb.
Not finished yet though, but have bought som NOS MOS and new parts were possible. (Really hope I haven’t done any wrong connections since I am a noob in troubleshooting electronics)
I'm not usually a fan of clear cases but that one looks pretty sweet.
Love your channel !! .... first computer I ever saw was a ZX81 .... my first computers were Casio PB-100, Atari 400, Comodore 64, Casio PB-1000, Sinclair Ql ..... they good old days
Very nice build
Such a great project
I'm making a replacement 6526 and 6510. Both use a STM32 (like the ARMSID). The 6510 uses the 6502 T state emulator I wrote and used for Pi1541. The replacement 6510 PCB has a SD card that can contain ROMs so the ROMs on the 64's motherboard can remain unpopulated. The 6526 project has a version where it can replace both for the 64 motherboard revisions that have them side by side. I will let you know when I am ready for public testing. #buildac64
That’s fantastic Stephen - I want the scoop! :)
That is awesome!!
I'm not convinced with the result, but I like that options like this exist and I totally get why you'd want to show off your work. Can you route the keyboard cable underneath or something to make it cleaner?
I like keeping things "Stock" (I drive a MX1 MX5 with it's original tape player) but I like that case a lot!
Nicely done. I just got my original C64 working. I hope everyone is enjoying these retro computers. #buildac64
As i am To young to have Grown up with a C64's the more I watch all the different Creators play with theirs the more i have been wanting to also. Keep up the good Content. #buildac64
If I wasn't going to build a uAX64 already, I would totally do this. I LOVE that case!
You could de-pin the keyboard connector, then solder new wires in whilst replacing the original connector pins
#BuildAC64
For anyone following along, 901227-03 is the latest kernal. The 901227-02 file pointed to @5:59 has severe colour bugs within the kernal screen editor.
You will see @6:10 that our host is actually using the preferred 901227-03 kernal file.
I think adding coloured lights to it (since the case is plexiglass) might make it really stand out! Fantastic job on the build!! #BUILDAC64
The C-64 was and still is my "holy grail" retro system. Back in the day I had a friend with one and I was always amazed at the cool things he could do with it, the great graphics and amazing sound that I couldn't do with my Apple II. I am so glad that so many modern solutions exist that help make using and maintaining these retro systems so much easier, and am thankful to all of the creators that make these things possible. #BuildAC64
I’ve only just come across this channel as I’m used to watching Perifractics C64 builds.
I never had a C64 as I went from Dragon 32 to BBC B, but that looks so cool 😎.
Likewise - although it took me over 30 years to get the BBC ;) lockdown was just such temptation to get one
@@julianbrown1331 literally gave mine away about 20 years ago. So wish I had it now though
I currently have a BMC64 Pi based C64 & recently got a Breadbin C64 that was a loft find. The breadbin one was up the loft uncovered for over 30+ years according to the seller & has a massive coating of soot & grime all over it, so much in fact that 75% of the keys you can't see the writing on them lol. That's my project this bank holiday to strip it & give the keys & case a good soak, oh & I did fire it up & all works perfectly. I have built a new Sinclair Spectrum & a new C64 is next on the list to build, after that an A500 new build is on the cards (thought I would work my way up from smallest to largest). #BUILDAC64
Looks like the double pin header is installed incorrectly on the pcb. The thick end passes through from below to be soldered on top. The longer thin ends plug into the dial socket, that's why they are longer.
Very nice. A C64 in this format would be a perfect companion to the MEGA65 DevKit. #BUILDAC64
A small notice. I don't know, but those pin headers have two different sides. One side is thicker and the other side is thinner and longer. I always thought, the thicker side should be soldered so that the long-thin side goes down into the other sockets. That way, they even fit precision/round sockets without stretching them and they go all the way in. But, I may be misinformed.
More solid gold stuff.
Looks great. Nice that they did your logo in the top. #BuildAC64
Retro rebuilding is fast becoming one of my new hobbies, thanks for sharing your experience with us! #BuildAC64
I loved my C64, it was my first computer. My mum and I used to spend hours typing in programs from magazines, it was great fun. Being in the UK I had a tape deck and I got the matching printer which got so much use. #BUILDAC64
I think ideally make sure the KB extension is black and can be neatly kept at the side with the two meeting underneath/hidden beneath the KB. #BUILDAC64
Didn't think a completely 'new' 64 was possible. nice work #buildac64
I was sceptical about a plexiglass case for a C64, but I have to admit it looks quite fancy (other than the dust-magnet problem for sure ....). #buildac64
Incredible build! Always a pleasure to watch your great videos. #buildac64
Could you tell me where you purchased your EEPROM programmer please?
Just wondering if you can make your the Retro Shack cutting glow by projecting some blue LEDs on it!
Nice video, but are you going to do some tests on it (I actually want and love to see it working that's all)
Thanks,
OK. Dumb question. What are the other pins (addressing/data pins? R/W? Electric Erase?). Does the board remap the pins? or does it eliminate the extra pins at the end?
I’m keen to see the final versions of the VIC replacements using FPGA’s, they look super promising. My first IT job was repairing C64’s and Amigas back in the day! #BuildAC64
I love the form factor of those early home computers. Why there isn't somebody making a low powered PC to fit that style of case is a mystery to me. Sure the PSU would probably have to be external and yes it would probably be best suited to Ryzen integrated graphics but what the hell. It would look awesome. Probably the hardest part would be finding a cooler slim enough to fit. Noctua make the NH-L9i which has a height of just 37mm.
One thing just dawned on me, are RF shields needed with newer components on these boards, I mean the new things most likely dont "bleed" and disturb stuff around them or atleast not to the same extent as the old 80's components, or am I overthinking it ?
So how is the dust issue so far with the plexiglass???
I got one of the crystal clear cases for the A500++ I built two years ago just recently. It's a beautiful case and will show off the awesome purple motherboard of the A500++. I loved the case you chose for your #BUILDAC64, and I'd love to try building a64 my self.
I did some quick research and it may be possible to use a 65c22 for the 6526 with an adapter. The 65C22s are still being made. More investigation is needed. #buildac64
You could always put it in one of those hermetically sealed see through cases they use in maternity ward for premature babies and use it. You know those cases that have the holes with the gloves attached to them that you can us for your hands?
Outside of that, I really can't think of any anti-static solutions (unless Gorilla Glass has anti-static properties)
After watching your C64 video's recently ive been wanting to dig out my old C64 and mess around with it. But building a new one sounds like ao much fun! #BUILDAC64
Looks amazing. Great work on finding almost the new parts. #buildac64
I've been looking for a big soldering project and after playing with Spectrums in recent months it would be nice to take on a C64. Great video as always thank you. #BUILDAC64
Where is the 6502 -> 6510 project you mentioned?
Nice to know they have options. #BUILDAC64
I guess there is a way to use only one EPROM for all 3 ROMs by combining all 3 on different EPROM locations and wiring 2 wires from CS lines to EPROM's address lines.
#buildac64 - Looks good, I am sure that there are "anti-static sprays" available to help reduce the dust attraction to your machine. I imagine a transparent SX-64 would be quite an attractive beast as well
Very interesting they do a similar case for the Amiga A500. I can hear Mrs Crashed now, "Another bloody thing to dust..." #BUILDAC64
So much nostalgia for me! This is the second computer I owned, great job, glad I found your channel! #buildac64
A keyboard extension cable is something I can’t imagine isn’t more used given the number of C64s out there. Wonder if someone hasn’t a pre-made one. Maybe weave some Electroluminescence wires in to get some attention in. Very cool build. #BUILDAC64
Looks great and Like your channel. I acquired a bunch of retro computers for $75.00 about 4 years ago and finally unboxed just a couple of months ago to see what was inside. They were found in an attic from a house that was cleaned and ready for sale. Supposably the previous owner of the house (who had passed away) actually worked for Commodore. Ended up with qty of 3 C64's, qty of 2 TI99's, about 75 cassettes, stacks of floppy's, a few disk drives, cassette drive, about 4 dozen cartridges, misc. wires and adapters. Hoping to get started soon and find out what works and what can be repaired and restored. Maybe I should do a video while inventorying. #buildac64
Hi looking goo just a thought though, not sure if you may have problems but you left the unused address lines floating on your ROM replacements, maybe not as you programmed multiple images but still not good practice #buildac64.
This build looks incredibly fun! Can't wait to see each part get replaced. #BUILDAC64
Never had a C64 growing up. My first computer was a Tandy Radio Shack Color Computer (TRS-80 CC). I also had a Cambridge Z88 portable computer. My high school had a PDP-11 system that I learned BASIC, COBOL, and Pascal on.
#BUILDAC64
This was my first computer system, passed down to me when my father bought a word processor for typing his college essays. Building one of these is definitely my life's list of to-do's. #BuildAC64
Always had color computers. Sold many c64 back in the day and need to add one to my collection. #buildac64.
Nice work - almost to the goal! Just been planning my own take on this so fingers crossed #buildac64
The c64 is the first piece of “retro tech” that appeared on my radar after my mother told me about it. This project to build one out of new parts is exactly the kind of thing I would attempt! #BuildAC64
#buildac64 From experience with my mega65 dev kit - plexiglass cases always attract dust you didn't know was floating around, let alone the stuff you do know is about
That looks sharp! Now you need some RGB case lighting. #buildac64
That's the only thing with perspex sheets. Static! Apparently, you can spray water onto the protective sheet before you peel it off or even put the board in an oven at about 60 Celcius for 4 hours. Or go for the option of anti-static spray. Either, or. #BUILDAC64
Tell u whats missing from that case LED's in case to showcase the build
Excellent video as always! Is the keyboard itself slated to be fully replaced with new parts as well in this build? would love to see a cable that routes in such a way that the PCB goodness isn't blocked by whatever replaces the rigged connector. Was the white keyboard part of the kit and already a new one? I noticed in the last video after re-watching that is the original black c64 and this is white. Did I miss the mention of the new keyboard? #buildac64
I'm (very slowly) working my way through a repair on my own childhood C64. I could see salvaging some parts for a new build, and I've been itching for an excuse to get an EPROM programmer for little projects! #BUILDAC64
The black and gold mainboard is strikingly beautiful, looking to build a c64 myself soon! #buildac64
The C64 is still the most Iconic Homecomputer ! #BuildAC64
Well, I actually think the case works even though I did not think so initially. Being able to see the board is just amazing. I was thinking when you get to making a permanent keyboard cable extension it is something that tucks under the motherboard so you end up seeing just the chips. Well done and don’t feel bad if you never go back to the world of Spectrum 😂 #buildac64
Always happy to see new builds. I can't stand plexiglass cases though. They cheapen everything imho; I would have gone with a translucent C64C case.
Yet another super video, very clear and informative commentary, thoroughly enjoyable 👍 #BuildAC64
Love the series. That case looks sweet! #BuildAC64
Wonderful follow up video. June 11th is my birthday, so this would be a great present. I’m gonna give the contest a go. Lol. #BuildAC64
Not sure about the plexiglass case, not something I'd like for myself, but the idea of building my own C64 has been something I've been wanting to do since I had to leave my old C64 behind in my last move!! #buildac64
I think the final result looks really good, personally. It's making me want to have a go myself. #buildac64
Amazing build and the whole new C64 came out perfectly! #buildac64
I can't wait until you can build an entirely new C64, it's getting so close now! A perfect project to POKE around 🤣 #buildac64
The black boards look great. The thought of building a computer from a PCB was what got me into electronics and retro computing in early 2020. After a detour into the Ben Eater 6502 and Acorn & BBC repairs I’m now looking at learning more about C64 #buildac64
Congratulations! You've won :) Please get in touch via email and don't forget to include your username in the email.
@@TheRetroShack Excellent, thanks :-) Email sent

I own a C64, but have never build anything like this from scratch...would love to grow from a noob to..well more than a noob! #BUILDAC64
The colourful stickers on the ROM are a great idea. IMO the crystal with the wire hurts the esthetics a little bit. But otherwise it's one grand C64 build! #buildac64
That was a good video. I like your clone. As I mentioned, then I have build my own SixtyClone. These boards are so nice. But I went for a black Model-C case my self, and brown rubber feets. Also a case badge that nobody else seem to use. If you would like to have a look, then it is on my channel.
#buildac64 That case looks amazing, could do with some subtle led lighting just to highlight that awesome board 😁😁😁
Wow another lovely build and info cheers! #buildac64
That look so good. Hopefully you can make a photo-shoot that includes it. #BUILDAC64
That looks cool. #buildac64
Next up is a new keyboard to be fully new?
Great job and really like the clear case. #BUILDAC64
Very nice indeed. Builing a new 64 on your own like this is really cool. #BUILDAC64
I think that case looks amazing! I look forward to any updates about static build up. #buildac64
Basically this is a unique new machine which looks to have the size of an amiga 500 in the way you build it so brand new commodore hybrid! :) Also even if it has one or a few classic chips it is still brand new and amazing especially in this color! 🤩 I would make one like this totally custom and keep one in its absolute original style just to have also the original love aside! :) #BUILDAC64
