I really like your style. I'm an old lady now and I have experience and watch a hundred trainers. I have a 🎉 21 TB exracer. I don't wear spurs not against them . But I do carry a schooling whip. The method I ride to ask 3 times 4th time a tickle with the whip. I'm not into kicking each stride and relie on pressure on my calf muscel to encourage more energy. And so far it has worked. Not saying I wouldn't have to get stronger in big horse groups if they took of. I am a great believer in the one rein stop it has saved ne a few times from things developing. But that has to be introduced before the bolting kicks in. Basically I do ride keeping my eyes open and read her body language through my seat.
I do allow her to get in my space she came to me very broke. And I guess that is a bit of a concern. But she seems to be seriously concerned about my safety. I am on crutches at the moment and need 2 new hips. She hasn't been ridden since last March. It is now January and this op is a way of June.
All I want to do is ride this pony .
It's is so frustrating as I am so handicapped at the moment I couldn't lead her on foot ,lung her and I scared she will be to stiff to handle being ridden when I'm fixed she us 21 now. She is normally good with the farrier but the last couple of times she has struggled with one of her hinds.
She is one for biting gates sweeping anything of the table pulling rugs down periodically so I guess she has plenty of dominance in her nature. Not sure what I am asking for really it's turned into a bit of a ramble. Take Care keep the good work up.

Thank you for showing this video. I have come to realize after seeing a number of your current videos that unknowingly I had allowed my young horse to become spoiled and that manifested itself as I asked more of him under saddle. Due to your videos I have known how to handle his temper tantrums and intimidations he may try to avoid work. I confess that I am not the rider I was and I am aware of my mortality but I am confident I can call his bluff and he is improving with every ride.
I am happy to hear that my videos are helping, that's why I do them.
@@timandersonhorsetraining Watching today was eye opening as my horse has done that same "threatening to rear" move ( kind of popping up) just after I mounted and asked him to move forward after having 10 days off. I just made him move and am making sure to watch his manner as well as body language and he gets no extended time off and he has not offered to do that again. You make it easy to understand what and why you do it, which is most helpful.
Can't wait to see how this progresses. You have a lot a patience!

rewatching this again just days later as my young guy was balky and stopping when I tried to go left/ change directions yesterday. Today when I got on he flat refused to move at all. My spurs should be here by Monday but I really needed them today. I was afraid to do this but I got off and lunged him and got back on. Asked for him to move and when he just stood there I got off and did it again. After 7 or more times of that he went forward as I asked 🙂 I made the mistake of trying to ask for a change of direction again and he shut down but 1 lunge session ( they were brief but I made him move with energy) was all it took and we walked quietly, willingly and he did what I asked, turning both ways. He will have tomorrow off. Not really looking forward to Monday. He has been a challenge.
Some days are just like that. Persistence and structure will get him going in the right direction.

Tim your patience and persistence is superb, thank you for sharing. I must confess that I find this horse’s energy is not to my liking, I feel the need for more impulsion and enthusiasm which is why you are a trainer and I am not! I really appreciate learning from you, though. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your helpful videos! I have two horses that couldn't be more different. One is anxious, but a people pleaser at heart, and very trainable. The other is a lot like Brodie - very confident, but completely unwilling to give to pressure until it is the only option left (he's a late two year old, also a cryptorchid, but now gelded). I haven't started him under saddle yet, but I imagine we'll run into some of the same obstacles you're seeing with Brodie. He was "imprinted" as a foal and his previous owners said they spent a lot of time "desensitizing" him. It seems like he's just learned that humans are an inconvenience that can mostly be ignored. After a few months of consistent work, we're finally starting to get to a point where he's less tuned out - thanks in part to your tips! Lots of work left to do, but I think he'll be worth it :)
Likewise. my mare, when I got her as a 3 year old had been desensitized a lot .Not afraid of anything a human did, would walk straight through me, and was dangerous if she was scared as i could not get her away from me.She is a nice mare but just thought of humans as food providers, and anything called "work " was out of the question. Things going much better now .

I had the same issue with my mare that I purchased with no history when asked to trot worked it out but took awhile hard to fix learned behavior now

This hirse rrminds me of a few 4H horses that I was presented with......with very green riders. So much work to get a horses mind to click out of a learned "bad" habit. You are using a good bit but he sure does protest. He is not putting out "happy" vibes......very resistant....forward movenent even shows bad attutude. Looking forward to seeing him accept that the rider is in charge. He has to "accept" his human......and be ok with it! A good looking horse......attitude adjustment will realky enhance his overall look! Wonder how he is at feeding time? Stall manners?

I think it's a lot easier to slow one down than to try to fix this type of behavior. I understand you have to control it when he's fresh but I do wonder, is he difficult to motivate into a trot too? Does he have transitions or is this another "hole" in his previous life before you got him? There seems to be a lot of rigid resistance in him, it looks like he's really trying to root his nose out when you're giving him the slightest cue for direction before he yields... he's definitely gonna keep you focused😂

Well, this guy acts much like my mare does - mostly good natured and easy but can throw hissy fits if she wants to do what She wants to do -.mostly out on the trail. A little rear, feeble bucks, and gets stuck to the ground. Sometimes circling isn't possible.
Still being spoiled. He reminds me of kids who want to do something cool but dont want to do fundamentals needed to pull it off. It looks like this one could have a career on ballet with all the circles he is turning.🎠

What about poor work ethic on the lunge line ?
In my opinion once one is broke to ride there are only certain situations why one should ever be on a lunge line again.

Working on a lunge line is not going to tell a true picture of what you have to work with and it creates a horse that always has to be lunged before he's ridden.

Very unhappy horse. Pain ruled out? I wonder if riding in a halter would change his attitude. He is very busy in his mouth. Thin snaffles can make lots of horses resistant.
Your direction of thought is opposite of what's going on here. You drew in to a couple of the big signs but for the proto be pain or needing to be ridden in a halter the timing of the action you are seeing is wrong.
Yes I should have watched longer. He settles down quite nicely. So this is behaviour.
