      Hi Baz! I was wondering. we always hear that “the heavily armored heavy cavalry was the king of the medieval battlefeild” but it seems like most videos online, including a lot of yours, expressly show them being defeated. it’s just kind of odd repeatedly hearing this being said, but equally seeing them repeatedly beind defeated. could you maybe show a video that shows the medieval heavy cavalry displaying their supposed vaunted effectiveness? something that maybe shows the normative effect of them so we can actually get the proper sense of when they are defeated. because how it stands now, at least among a lot of historical battle channels, I cant think of too many that puts the money of the heavy cavalry where their mouth is. outside of the crusades.
      maybe this is an artifact of the more unexpected victories being covered more.

    Here's an idea for a new battle:
    The battle of Campaldino, 11th june 1289
    It was one of the final clashes in Italy between guelphs and ghibellines (Pro pope and Pro emperor factions).
    The battle was fought between the republic of Florence and the commune of Arezzo, Florence won at last thanks to his superior heavy cavalry. Even the young Dante Alighieri took part in the battle, fighting as a mounted warrior for Florence.
    It would be awesome for me to see it in one of this video!
    Keep going like this!!

    Some fun bits of info about the White Ship Disaster:
    -William Adelin initially won free of the shipwreck by escaping on a small dinghy, but tried to go back and rescue his sister. His boat was promptly swamped by everyone and he died with the rest.
    -The captain of the ship, Thomas FitzStephen survived the wreck by swimming away and clinging to a rock, but upon realizing William had died, he gave himself to the sea rather than face the king's wrath.

    • @Revanchist
      @Revanchist 4 роки тому

      How is this information known if everyone died?

    • @Cowslippoetry
      @Cowslippoetry 4 роки тому +2

      @@Revanchist The information comes from chroniclers who wrote about it several years after it occurred, one of which comes from Robert Curthose, participant in the First Crusade and Adelin's uncle. (Spend the later half of your life in captivity, what can you do but write?) Some accounts state that there were a handful of survivors, anywhere from one to five, although the White Ship incident is often described as "everyone dying". I think that term means everyone who mattered; those possible survivors were most likely servants or low ranking crewman who had the good luck of being strong swimmers. Of course we're talking about history from nearly a thousand years ago, so all tales from the past have to be viewed as accounts and not hard facts.
      Those with an eye for literary flair may notice both incidents come off as rather...romantic, for lack of a better word. The young prince dying amidst a noble rescue effort, the captain choosing death over dishonor, there's something very Shakespearean about them.

    2:47 And that's why in CKII&III, the one son strategy isn't always as good as it may seem. It's a tradeoff. *If* your one son survives, there will be a lot less turmoil in his reign. But that can be a big if.

    • @atermondyolamda6971
      @atermondyolamda6971 4 роки тому

      Well, it can't always be reliably planned, unless the player is not shy to shamelessly save-scum. I had a run once when a king of my family reigned for about 65 years (from his 17 till 82). He had one son and nine daughters. That son had five daughters of his own before being assassinated (despite his primary stat being intrigue). The crown was passed to a young legitimized bastard son that was at the sidelines until then. Good thing I had that inspiration for a backup.
      It seemed to be a theme for that playthrough. The overwhelming majority of the family tree were girls. That king also had four sisters, no brothers, and his father was an only child. This father's cousin also had another five daughters, no son, through he had a younger brother to take the duchy (surprise).
      That legitimized son had three daughters before the only son. And the next closest heir was the grandson of a second cousin, without any brothers too (had agnatic succession law installed, just to be sure).
      I was forced to play the one son strategy without intending to, and it almost bit me... On a positive note, almost every kingdom and duchy tier dynasty in the region had my cousins and nephews and great-nephews as rulers, due to the sheer number of girls I had to marry off!

    • @101jir
      @101jir 4 роки тому

      @@atermondyolamda6971 Well what I mean is players that, once they get a son, will attempt to kill or divorce their wife right away, and simply not remarry and resist all events that can give mistresses.
      But yeah, whether you are trying to or not CK2&3 will do what they do and you have to roll with the punches.

    • @atermondyolamda6971
      @atermondyolamda6971 4 роки тому +1

      @@101jir Well, it seems to me that those people are less, let's say, ''sophisticated'' players. There is a bunch of laws to choose to subvert that and besides, after v2.8 a bunch of Casus Beli to use.
      Even if the former is not applicable and your younger brother got ''your'' second favourite county/castle/sword/teddy bear? Just go and conquer some more! Jeesh... Or just take it back through war, diplomacy or intrigue. Or even wait and the problem will just solve itself (even younger brothers kill each and you inherit the lot).
      But seriously, don't put all your eggs in one basket, because the RNG is the final arbitrator and it reigns supreme! (XCOM déjà vu with shivers...)

    French Cavalry: *exists*
    English Longbows: "So anyway I started loosing"

    • @strikemasterice2004
      @strikemasterice2004 4 роки тому

      I believe the time this battle took place the English had not adopted the longbows. Originally it was the Welsh who used them, but when they were later conquered by the English, the longbows was adopted into the army.
      It wasn't just picked up and used however, as the strength and skill require to effectively utilize such a heavy bow required a lot of training compared to other traditional medieval bows.

    Both Alexander the Great and the Romans taught us the importance of combined arms tactics, one that medieval Europe forgot. Time and time again we see battles where medieval knights are defeated by Infantry and archers
