Warren Oates sadly passed on not even a year after this movie came out. Taken from us way too soon. Very talented character actor. Judge Reinhold said on the set of Stripes during breaks from filming that Oates would tell him and the other actors playing the platoon stories about The Wild Bunch and working with Sam Peckinpah and they would all be enthralled. Those guys who played the platoon members were so lucky to have that experience.
My dad told me this was one of the funniest movies he could remember, so we watched it together the other night. And he couldn't be more right. Hilarious movies with great actors. Nowadays movies are great too, but theres just something about the movies from the 80's that i love. :)
True story: In 1992 I entered the US Air Force. On the plane ride to basic, met a guy and we both liked this movie and made jokes about it. Wound up standing next to each other in formation and as soon as started marching as a group for the very first time, he mutters, "Hey, we're walking..." under his breath to me. We were both terrified (as you are on day 1 of basic training), and had to stifle a laugh for the next few minutes.
this was my father's favorite movie. he spent 18yrs in the service before his retirement. it meant a lot to see a movie post-vietnam that didnt frame the service so badly
Watching this with Dad, an Army vet, I asked him why Sergeant Hulka didn't put a stop to the do-wah-diddy. Dad cracked me up whey he said, "Cuz it was working."
When we got our bags I threw that on my shoulders. I thought boy I hope I don't fall over. Kid next to me said, I think I'm going to to fall catch me. I started laughing.
That was a great part of the movie 👍. When I was in basic training in 1986 at Fort Benning, I wish my platoon would have sang that when we were marching.
I was in basic training when this came out. One of the sergeants was trying to get us to do it. We couldn’t figure out what he was trying to do. I saw the movie after I got home.
@@neilkurzman4907 I was still in High School when the movie came out. I don't remember what month. I thought that was a great movie. That was a great marching cadence, I thought.
I spent time in the army. Doing "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" during Basic Training would've gotten me dropped for pushups, but I got away with it during AIT. ;)
@menotellname i agree. ramis had some of the best lines in the film. like when he bet bill he couldnt do 5 push-ups "youre about ready for the special olympics."
Saw this movie at the drive-in with my folks just before my own enlistment. "Though I should enlist before I got drafted" 😆 🇺🇸 LOL I ended up stationed at Fort Knox, KY later in my service time, just before Desert Storm..... The obstical course hadn't changed much from this movie's scene of it.
In Holland the marines are like this, well we are organized but humor is a part of the marines :). I might join the marines aswell, a good friend of mine is in the marines-coprs and all he says is: it's awesome. My country is what I want to defend so maybe I'll be defending it one day.
I've never seen this entire movie but every time I watch this clip I think it's funny that Harold Ramis says, "Hey, we're walkin'!" But how come he says it? Were they all told beforehand that they were going to have to learn how to walk? I guess so.
Joined in 00' and the first chance I got, marching my company, I did this. The "magic" was it was unannounced and enough people knew what to say. "Religious Experience"
I wanted life in the military. But God had other plans, I guess... My mom was Army and my Dad was Air Force, it was in my blood but I still ended up a contractor at a National guard hangar..
it is once you get out of basic man, basic sucks ass. once you get to a line unit, its a whole different set of rules. our greeting of the day isnt "good morning sir". more like "RECON sir chicks dig it!" or, to one of our mexican staff sergeants; HOLA sergeant-o, coma esta?
So many great actors....Judge, John, Bill and Harold.
RIP Harold and John
JOHN LAROQUTTE AND TIM BUSFIELD IN WEST WING
Sgt Hulka died shortly after the movie was made
Warren Oates died in , 1983.

EXACTLY! I love this movie so much!
Me too, yes!

Am I the only one Who thinks that Harold could sing pretty well? RIP Legend!💖
RIP Harold Ramis you were truly a legend.
Applause for Peter and Egon on Stripes.

I absolutely loved this, love this song! So much fun to watch!
i love how they both laugh out loud about it before singing
Still holds up after all these years, amazing movie!
That uniform and marching sure brings back memories.
Dr. Venkman and Dr. Spengler, the early years.
omg!! Harold Ramis is a good singer ^_^
I love the movie, and this is one of my favorite parts
This is one of my fav movies
thanks for the laughs
this movie is so epic. ramis was also fucking funny in this movie. his facial expressions and his lines haha!. ''harikrishmaa, harikrishmaa'' haha
I just started watching this movie today I actually like both this scene and when dose two starting singing
I'm surprised that hulka even let them sing
Because it fits the beat of the march it gets them to do what he needs them to do while also raising their morale so he allows it like a good NCO.
In real life that would never have happened. At least in basic training. But, it's a movie and they were just having fun with it.
Yeah if we started singing our first day at boot camp it would of been down and give 50 push ups. Great movie though.
Can you imagine the outtakes/ bloopers and ad lib stuff they did during the filming of this movie?? I would have loooved to been there for that.
Watching this with Dad, an Army vet, I asked him why Sergeant Hulka didn't put a stop to the do-wah-diddy.
Dad cracked me up whey he said, "Cuz it was working."
love the song and the movie!
One if the funniest films ever...genius Ramis and Murray, utterly brilliant x
Best military cadence XD.
Harold Ramis and Bill Murray are fucking hilarious..... especially together.
This is this the first movie I watched with harold ramis and bill murray then it was Ghostbusters
Anyone else prefer Bill Murrays version of this song over the original?
Its the icon of SUCCESS!
I just realized that they are marching with their right when the DI yells left...epic anyway
most of the movie was filmed in kentucky. abn d i live in the area where it was filmed
When we got our bags I threw that on my shoulders. I thought boy I hope I don't fall over. Kid next to me said, I think I'm going to to fall catch me. I started laughing.

Yes and the last time I checked , you had better be looking straight ahead with your head up and not eye balling the sergeant .
Epic song!
@menotellname i agree. ramis had some of the best lines in the film. like when he bet bill he couldnt do 5 push-ups "youre about ready for the special olympics."
For an actor the guy who plays the DS does a heck of a cadence
Warren Oates.
@@wildman2012 Oates did two years in the Marines, so he had some experience with marching.

When were you at Fort Knox? My dad was stationed there from 81-87 with the 194th Armored.
with that Icon I wouldn't be surprised
forgot how big the M60's where till it drove past them
They were so focused on their singing, that they just didn't notice the M60.
They are the ARMY for a REASON
“There she was just a walk-in’ down the street. Singing Do Wa Diddy, Diddy Dum Diddy Do!”
Funniest scene ever!
Stripes: The most realistic boot camp movie EVER.
What about full metal jacket.?

Warren oates was perfect for that part RIP
the best part!!! hahaha

Third person in font of #BillMurray was way out of step :D
This movie was good , up until graduation. Then , mehhhh

The drill sergeant sure didn't mind for his men to be singing while they're walking with those backpacks on.

He was poking fun at the fact that they were doing something as simple as walking by making it seem like a huge accomplishment
@spaz01112
Yeah I actually do :D
anyone else that a lot of the time they were out of step including the drill instructor
If I was the Sergeant, I would be proud! XD
0:21 wait a second and u will see his eye twich
They're COMPLETELY out of step.

i think Murray and Ramis wrote that song lol
