  • Montana Wheat Harvest 2021 Morning Routine!!!
    In today's video, I take you through our morning routine to get the combines and grain cart ready for a day of harvest on our Montana farm. We have to be sure to grease the combines and grain cart. We also blow out all the filters. Harvesting wheat is a very dusty job! If we miss greasing one zerk fitting a fire can start, so we are very thorough. Our crew has a great attitude and we all try to get a good start to the day! Darcy has a lot to say this morning! My Dad takes a pass with me in my combine to show me how to set up the header. He thinks that the John Deere manual is more complicated than reading the Bible. He might be right. I got stung by a bee, so I put mud on it at lunch. Thank you so much for watching and I hope you like my video!!!

    My Story…
    Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 17-year-old 4th generation Montana farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

    I spent a lot of time in the fields with my dad and my older brother and the rest of the men on the crew during various harvests back in the 60s. They're gone many years now and the banter of getting ready to get going for the day brought back some fond memories to my mind and a tear or two to my eyes. Thanks for sharing and stay safe out there.

    Don't forget moments like this, just finished corn harvest (yes early, Texas harvest corn in August) and for the first time in almost five years my dad rode in my combine with me. He retired about a year ago but did custom harvesting for 38 years... No matter how much experience I have, he will critique me... Even if we're in my new combine, which he has never run... But I always take it to heart. Never forget memories and the experiences your elders like your dad passes down to you!

    Lol..All that gallows humour and sarcasm in the wheat fields.
    Did you know, it's good practice to refill diesel tanks at night than in the morning. Empty tanks allows condensation to form they cool and that accumulates in the diesel.
    Same with over greasing excess grease attracts dust and causes wear.

    • @scottsoper
      @scottsoper 3 роки тому +1

      Condensation is why there are water separators. Also consider that the air there in MT is VARY dry. Excess grease may attract dust but that is on the outside and just gets dirty; no additional wear. Just how much grease also depends on the particular type and size of bearing. On my small JD it was one or two pumps on the grease gun just like the grease gun in the video.

    Hi Kate! Greetings from Alberta! We used to run 9870's on our farm up here. FYI when you do your morning service keep a close eye on the engine fan for bearing play. The fan hub is known to fail, in fact it happened to one of ours. It's a very expensive fix. Okay just wanted to share something I know about them. Enjoy your videos, happy harvesting.

    I´m a bit disappointed that it seems you don´t do maintenance on your own rigs? Be it a combine, tractor, semi or whatever - the driver should always know their own equipment. The reason why, is that only the driver knows what noises have changed since the last greasing, the rattle that started two hours ago, and the squeaky noise from below the cabin. Greasing your machine is an excellent excuse to look at these things.

      @@KatesAg Hehe, no -not this one, Kate ;) I would love to hear your take on it. Keep in mind that I still admire your reporter skills though - but I really need you to say whether you grease your own machines at least once in a while? If you don´t - just say so - and it´s an honest case.I won´t think any less of you - you obviously have other qualities.

      Thank you for the information. In Montana we have a bug called Saw Fly that destroys the stems of the wheat and we cannot pick it up with our straight cut headers. If we didn’t swath it first we would lose most of our crop. We would prefer not to swath but we have no choice.

    So good to see that your Dad has a feeling for his machinery. There's not many people nowadays that have what I call 'mechanical appreciation' and care about and look after their cars ,trucks and other stuff. Great to see your dad listening and feeling what his combine is doing and being sensitive to its stresses. Stuff lasts longer that way! Along with all the great maintenance you do every day too, of course. Do the duals on the new combine make a big difference?

    The most important reason to keep that dust off the combines, especially the fine dust of soybeans, is that it's highly flammable next to a hot bearing.
