  • @ridethetsunami

    What are your thoughts on framing decisions for the posts? Are there code guidelines for how wide these panels can be? You spoke about your design helping prevent sag. How wide of a section would you be comfortable with? Are your 6x6s fastened to joists eith carriage bolts?

    • @Eaglewatch333
      @Eaglewatch333  3 місяці тому

      I’ve only used up to the 8’ panel without any center support. I have several 8’ sections on my deck that have never sagged.
      I do fasten my 6x6 post to my joist and outer band, with bolts and screws using the blocking method. I don’t know code on the length of panels but they can’t have over a 4” gap in the squares. Don’t know if this is any help… but good luck on your project.

    • @ridethetsunami
      @ridethetsunami 3 місяці тому

      @@Eaglewatch333 this is very helpful, thank you! I'm assuming I'd need a certain thickness or gauge of the wireframe in order to not bend in the middle if the length of the rails was long enough to have sag. I have a 40' wide deck and I wouldn't mind 5 sections of 8' but I'm trying to minimize the number of posts while remaining safe and not sagging.

    Man, that looks good! How much was it per panel? About $50 hog wire + wood?

    • @Eaglewatch333
      @Eaglewatch333  8 місяців тому +4

      It’s closer to $100. total for a 6 ft. panel plus wood. The
      6’ hog panel at Home Depot is $65. and add another $35. for wood. 8 ft. panels are $90. so about $125. total for an 8 ft. section. Good luck and enjoy

    Great video, thanks! Was all of the wood PT wood? If so, was it of a particular type? And, did you treat it after it was installed? Many thanks...

    • @Eaglewatch333
      @Eaglewatch333  5 місяців тому

      Yes, all regular pressure treated. I do spend more for premium pt 5/4” boards for the top handrail when available. Give the new wood a month or so to dry out and definitely waterproof it with a good quality sealer. I usually use a Behr stain/sealer from the local Home Depot but there’s a lot of good products out there. Good luck 👍

    • @patrickobrien8851
      @patrickobrien8851 5 місяців тому

      @@Eaglewatch333 Thanks for the detailed reply, for which you will be punished with one more set of questions 🙂. Do you get the PT boards at a local lumber yard, or at one of the big box DIY stores? I find that the finish quality of PT lumber is very rough, and doesn't do as well with treatment as does green or finish DF, for example. Plus, when you cut into the PT lumber, you're dealing with the dust, as well as exposing interior wood to the elements (yes, which I know you later treat also). I'm leaning towards cedar or prime grade KD DF; wood types or wood grades are rarely discussed in videos, it seems to me (and that might only be my missing the info...). Thanks, again!

    • @Eaglewatch333
      @Eaglewatch333  5 місяців тому

      I do get most of my wood (and other materials) from the big box stores. I do use a local supplier but often they don’t carry the selection I need. You’re right, good wood is getting harder to come by so I’m selective where it matters.
      After the wood on a project is dry enough to stain, I go over it with a sander before sealing.
      As far as using different types of wood- that’s totally an individual choice and what you’re willing to spend. I do know the pt pine decks I build, if taken care of, will outlast me. Hope your project turns out great!

    • @patrickobrien8851
      @patrickobrien8851 5 місяців тому

      @@Eaglewatch333 Great detail in that reply, and many thanks for it. The deckboards are 2" cedar, so I certainly do the 4x4" posts with cedar, and figure out the rest after inspecting what the local lumberyard has. The big box stores, given that I live in the boonies, are a distance away, and one needs to do a very close measurement of all that is needed, with the usual % over. Take care!

      @Eaglewatch333  5 місяців тому

      Those were pressure treated 2”x2”x8’s. (I don’t know why but a 2x2x8 and a 2x4x8 cost the same. I did rip down 2”x4”x 8’s on my most recent deck project. 20 minutes on the table saw saved over $80. on my 5 hog panel rails.

    What screws are you using? I always use deck screws and the wood always splits

    • @Eaglewatch333
      @Eaglewatch333  8 місяців тому

      I use the Deckmate star bit (torx) screw. The dryer the wood the easier it will spit, especially close to the ends of a board. Many times I keep a drill handy to pre-drill screw holes if it’s splitting or close to the end of a flooring deck board.

    Are hog panels galvanized or will they rust over time?

    • @Eaglewatch333

      The panels I used are powder coated - a heat treatment process and very rust resistant. The galvanized panels are available but I prefer the look of the black colored wire.
