Thanks for the lesson. Most of the lessons on the harmonic minor on youtube are metal-oriented, which isn't a bad thing, I'm just not really a metal guy. I came to this lesson a while ago, and am just starting to figure out how to use the harmonic minor. This video was part of the reason for this. Thanks, Marty!

@14yroldcodyandguitar Dm7b5 is the 2nd chord in the 2 (Dm7b5) -5 (G7) -1 (Cm) . The 2nd is ALWAYS a Dim chord when using the Harmonic Minor scale. Harmonic Minor - 1st Chord - Minor, 2nd - Diminished, 3rd- Aug, 4th-Minor, 5th - Dominant, 6th- Major, 7th -Diminished Hope that helps :)
@VesanPrime Dm7b5 is a minor 7th chord with the blues note added (b5). About the Cm scale.. The chords that he used in the progression were Cm(1), Dm7b5 (2) and G7(5) .. in the C minor scale the 5th is a minor chord not a dominant like this progression so that's why this a the 'Harmonic Minor scale in C' not the C minor scale. Hope that helps.
I know it seems silly, but stuff like the face he pulls at 6:16 are really instrumental for me in terms of learning this stuff. You can say a harmonic minor has a major 7th in, but what that major 7th SOUNDS like can be summed up in that face... Great work, love it!

Love it, just what I was looking for. I've learn so much from you, I'm gonna buy one of your DVD sets just to show my appreciation. Thanks a bunch dude!
i came up with almost the same thing...but with b half diminished f as a passing note e 7th n a minor 7th .... then i shift the key to e minor....the same way as above.... then i end it with half step up.... like e minor - d # diminished - d major - c half diminished - c major 7th - b 7th...- g (single note) - f# (single note) - e minor...try it sir !!!!! the feel is amazing n if u play it it will be divine!!!!

Man, you make that solo look easy....I love this stuff. I wish you would come out with a video breaking down your solo licks a little slower...they sound great!
Marty u r the man dude thaks a lot men i love bolues and jazz but here i cant have a teacher im from ecuador and all the people just play like pop and rock and never teach things like this men thanks a lot...
I agree this is an excellent lesson...been going crazy trying to look for a lesson that's both practical and easy to understand. Try to add beginner's jazz to your keyword so people like me can find you better and keep up the good work.
