      Once you beat the game you unlock a hard mode and in the hard version of this level actually replaces the Transport Copter with another Battle Copter to all but force you to win by rout instead. So he basically did an extra hard mode by playing like it's the hard version of the map but with one less Battle Copter

  • @Descriptor413

    I honestly really liked Days of Ruin, despite the admittedly divisive genre shift. It had a surprisingly decent story that managed to just barely eck itself out of grimdark territory, and was easily the funniest of the games, ironically enough. Lots of good dialogue, I thought.
    The gameplay itself was fine, and did a decent job of reeling back the power creep that had taken hold in Dual Strike, but the CO mechanics never really worked for me. Especially because they didn't even start to kick in until the end game.

    • @chriswriter9087
      @chriswriter9087 Рік тому +9

      Preach brother, Days of Ruin doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
      DoR took the Storytelling in a bold new direction attempting to tell a serious story with the grit and seriousness it deserved, DoR rebalanced all the units costs and some of their performances, and DoR attempted a new way of implementing CO abilities and powers.
      Jon has repeatedly insulted Days of Ruin over the years and I'm sitting here asking, "Did we even play the same game? What is Jon complaining about?"

    • @Descriptor413
      @Descriptor413 Рік тому +7

      @@chriswriter9087 I mean, I get it. If you fell in love with the old characters and prefered the goofy tone, it's a pretty hard shift to accept. Especially since it was the last game in the series. And I'll even admit that the color pallet gets a bit depressing, in all honesty. But as a game and story of its own, outside the Advance Wars brand, I think it's pretty great.
      My favorite bit is when they get to the bunker and have to enter a code to get in, and one of the characters just asks "Okay, does anybody have a favorite 10 digit number" only for Isabella to answer with one (for backstory reasons), and the first character just doesn't know how to react. Kills me every time.
      That and the War Room skits.

    • @PaulPower4
      @PaulPower4 Рік тому

      My personal problem with Battalion Wars is that there's a reason I like turn-based strategy: I'm quite good at it. I'm a lot worse at real-time strategy, worse still at the kind of third person action-strategy the BW games went with. I gave up roughly seven missions into the second game because I couldn't handle the fighter and bomber controls, even in what were meant to be their tutorials; I just don't have the kind of manual dexterity, reflexes and spatial awareness it asked for. And from talking to others, the first game has difficulty spikes that would make Advance Campaign blush.
      Like I'm sure they're good games, but there are a lot of good games I don't particularly want to play.
      Re Wargroove: Yeah, it's not bad. Its highs are comparable with AW's highs, and that's not something I say lightly. Its lows are a lot lower though.

    Little sad Jon is so down on Days of Ruin, as that was my intro to Advance Wars as the overly colourful aesthetic never really worked for me as a strategy thing, just seems at odds with the whole 'war' thing. Especially as it had a plot that it wanted you to take a bit seriously which is kinda not possible with the more cartoony games. I did eventually play Dual Strike and enjoyed it a lot, to the degree that I got this one as well, but it does feel a bit like Fire Emblem to me, where the games in each franchise I really like are the outliers, making me a bit sad that the rest of the series isn't doing what I like about the ones that caught my attention. (Kind of the risk when series try something new to appeal to new audiences, unless you really commit, that new audience is likely to be disappointed if the other games don't do that thing)

    With all due respect, Dark Conflict is the best game of the series. Much more balanced, more interesting buildings like radar stations and temporary ports/airports, the APC is more useful, you can reveal hiding spots by simply going past them instead of only sitting next to them or driving right through them, COs were more balanced and tactical by limiting their day to day, ships were much more viable, and all the added units have their own useful niches.
    The game has sustained a good online following and to top it all off, it actually sold better than dual strike, so evidently not a let down. It's hardly a misrepresentation of the series and so while I can understand why people may not like it I will die on this hill

    • @greg_mca
      @greg_mca Рік тому +3

      Some more improvements found in dark conflict, because it's possibly my favourite game of all time:
      Defence and attack modifiers are altered to be linear, so better attack cancels out better defence, making stalemates much less likely.
      The AI doesn't cheat in fog.
      More slots for homemade maps on cartridge.
      The high end units have their own bigger weaknesses, meaning it can be much better to buy cheaper. Top tier units are less OP.
      The ace system incentivises keeping your units alive and allows you to build momentum instead of just throwing them into the meat grinder.
      Slightly lowered ammo counts also prevent stalemates and ensure that logistics is more important.
      The weather is simplified but still very distinct.
      (I believe) this was the first game to introduce starting funds, meaning games didn't need to begin from 0.
      The battleship can move and shoot in the same turn, making it much more useful than just a floating rocket.
      Carriers are improved and ship planes introduced, cruisers are much more powerful and serve as the backbone of a fleet, and missile boats perform the same role as black boats but can also fight back.
      Motorbikes absolutely change the capture game and do wonders to speed up gameplay. Having infantry be more expensive also prevents the spam a bit.
      Bridges aren't impenetrable barriers that naval units can't move past. Sure it's annoying that your tank can't progress because there's a submarine in the road, but it's better than the alternative.
      The soundtrack slaps

      I also like Dark Conflict because of the, well, darker setup and deeper characters. but my favorite would be Dual Strike, because of the abundance of features, and commanders that all work really well together. and the ability to fight two battles at once, with two commanders sending troops to each other is just genius! unfortunately we probably won't see this again, because it was tailor-made for the DS.
      PS: I pretty much despise the graphics of the remake. they could have gone with a little more character instead of the mobile look. look for Wargroove 2 for the general direction I had in mind.

      @@--ART3MIS-- not gonna lie I struggled with the multiple screen battles in dual strike, especially the ones where the AI just fights itself on the second front. I love Days of Ruins, like I legit think its a very good game. There is some legitimate good writing in that game, it revels in showing off the horrors of war, and the new mechanics are pretty fun. I think if it wasn't the end of new installments for the series it would be much better remembered and regarded. Yeah it was vastly different in tone, and such but it wasn't bad I personally like most of the story. Also like it commercially and critically succeeded. Scoring on average only 4 points less than dual strike (7 less than 2), and even outsold dual strike.

    • @PaulPower4
      @PaulPower4 Рік тому

      Yeah, Days of Ruin is perfectly good. The story's good (I played through the Dark Conflict European version myself, but I do think I prefer Days of Ruin's "woolseyisms"), the gameplay is fun and challenging, they made some good efforts to try and rebalance the units even if the anti-tank goes a bit hard. My main complaints are a drab and muddy art style (compounded by DS games' weird obsession with sprite scaling, which is a problem Dual Strike shares: AW1 and 2 nail their unit spritework so well, it's a shame what happened afterwards) and a relative lack of single-player content (no hard campaign, can never choose your CO in either missions or trial maps, heck until late on in the campaign your CO is completely irrelevant). I get that they wanted to make up for the lack of single-player with online multiplayer and a lot of map customisation, but some dodgy connectivity and the fact that you could only use 10x10 custom maps for multiplayer undercut that.
      I say all this with the caveat that all four GBA and DS games are, like, 92%+ games, and DoR might even be my second favourite after AW2 in terms of gameplay quality. But it is telling that I put over 200 hours into Dual Strike and only about 50 into DoR.

I fully agree that the darker anime makeover and oddly toothless story (despite trying to look darker and edgier) didn't help it, but the trial maps were fantastic. IMO, CO powers were way OP in the previous AW games, and DoR brought them into line and made unit choices and good positioning matter far more. But that's my bias as someone who hated how dumb CO powers were in the older games.

      It's still worth playing, the sound design is incredible, they made much needed tweaks to the AI and many campaign maps have been updated. I hated the art style too at first, but it has grown on me (a bit). There are many quality details throughout (e.g., each faction's infantry has unique weapons and sounds, COs have dynamic themes that change during battle or CO powers) that show there was love put into the remake. I was just as cynical after watching the gameplay trailer, but I'm actually really enjoying it. Don't write it off just from the art style!

    I'm sad to hear you disliked Days of Ruin/Dark Conflict so much, especially given how I think the series peaked with it. I much preferred the tone it had, and the gameplay received a much-needed rebalancing after the mess that was Dual Strike. I also really liked the new units and changes made to existing units (especially APCs/Rigs now being able to build temporary bases for air or naval units).
    Been interested in Re-Boot Camp, given I never got the chance to play the first two AW games back in the day. Given what I've seen and heard, I probably won't like it as much as Days of Ruin (soundtrack's kinda underwhelming, not a fan of the voices, and I really don't like how the 3D visuals look), but I do really want to see the series come back and I know buying this game will encourage Nintendo to keep it alive. I'm sure it'll be fun enough.

    I like Days of Ruin visually because I got very used to that visual style from IS's other more succsess franchsie Fire Emblem, Shadow Dragon is very much the reason behind it and it shows, the music is very FE at times, espcially the CO forcythes theme which sounds like it's from Raidant Dawn, so much so I swear it just has some of Accent in it.

    I haven't looked at the dev team for this but I really feel like it has the DNA of Tiny Metal - a game I saw at PAX West 2017 and bought on the Switch after its release, because they promised - and delivered - a spiritual successor to the good Advance Wars. The tank models and animations feel so similar, I'm curious if Nintendo brought that team in for this remake. I hope so!

    I went from Advance Wars 1 to Days of Ruin so didn't have all the care for the characters and stuff...honestly it was fine. The darker setting was still interesting, and the gameplay mechanics were fun enough. I think it just got bad rep because it went against the grain so much compared to previous ones.

      I think he's being too harsh on it really. To he honest given that dual strike sold less than dark conflict and the series was beginning to get repetitive by that point it could be argued that the switch up helped the series' longevity somewhat

    AW2 has a very basic plot, but I do feel like it has the strongest writing of the three Wars World games: the COs have a fun variety of personalities without feeling overly "Flanderised", and they seem to care more about the troops they command and the civilians they protect than in the other two games. That and it's allied to a lot of absolutely stellar mission design.

    Tbf, Days of Ruin wasn't necessarily the cause of the downfall, but moreso in that the developers (Intelligent Systems) effectively couldn't apply relationships as well as how they do it in Fire Emblem... As if that was what was needed for the Wars series...
