I just flicked passed The Ritual so many times because it just looked like so many other films about being lost in the woods. It totally took me by surprise when I was finally bored enough to give it a go. My jaw kept dropping further and further as it went on. I didn't realise a British film could be that good.
UnwrittenSpade because nighttime it’s dark and more scary in the day it’s light and you can see 😂 and plus your not going to bed in a short amount of time
"The Autopsy of Jane Doe" is amazing & scary(coming from someone who binge watches horror movies alone w the lights off) not just anything can scare me but that movie did
I have mixed feelings about the movie. I feel like uptil about the middle section of the movie, it was a unique horror movie with a one of a kind story. But at some point after, it just became a typical horror movie. Like the ending scene where the protagonist is surprised by the ghost of his father and falls off the stairs? So cliched and uninspired. It went from unique and possibly top tier horror movie to a cardboard cutout of a standard supernatural horror movie. I wish I could say that it was a true work of horrific art but in the end it had so much potential that was just wasted.
I used to watch 1963's 'The Haunting' every time it aired on TV when I was a kid. And it terrified me every time I saw it. It IS the scariest movie I have ever seen.
Mine too. My Mom saw it at the movies when it came out and she told me about it 8yrs old.And right after it showed up on t.v. and like you I watched it every time as well. The book was republished a few years later. It's even as and more terrifying than the movie! There are 2 scenes not in the film, one that takes place in the daytime outside which froze my blood and stopped my breathing OMG. I don't think it was technically possible at the time although in "The Innocents" with Debra Kerr they kind of did.
I have seen “The Ritual”, “Bone Tomahawk”, “The Invitation”, and “Terrifier.” All were excellent except for Terrifier whose plot holes and bad acting made it more silly than scary. I’m now super excited to watch “Session 9.” I love creepy abandoned asylums.
I agree. I'm surprised terrifier made the list, let alone was number one. The acting was awful and when I don't care about the characters, why watch? One of the few movies I turned off after a while because painting my toenails was more interesting. lol
i agree that the plot points in the The Terrifier where kinda cheese, but fuck did that clown scare me. had to cover my eyes like a good 50% of the movie. crazy gore.
"Creep" is a perfect example that you don't need anything fancy to make a proper horror movie. Just good acting, writing, and cinematography. 10/10 my fav found footage movie.
! OH HELL YES ! The Haunting (1963) is an amazingly well done film! It is the PERFECT example of the difference between terror & horror. Terror being the emotion that's so much more difficult to achieve from a film makers perspective.
@williampatrick2971 The plot, performances & visual storytelling from the 1963 film are absolutely superior when compared to the 1999 movie. Julie Harris played the female lead in the 1963 film. Her narrative performance is perfectly paired with her intense & expressive physical acting talents. The 1999 film was more of an attempt at exploring the capabilities of computer generated special effects in a horror film & it definitely fell short with its plot & character development. Also, the 2018 Netflix series is extremely well done. To be honest, its story is capable of being a success as a stand-alone film. If they'd changed the character names, film title & location names. i adore the ritual, the creature is so unique and well designed, and used sparingly; it's more atmospheric and situational horror. it's quite different from the novel, also, and better, in my opinion. the novel was also good but went in a totally different direction and relied a lot on being inside the characters' heads, without much of a monster present at all.
Creatures in the Ritual reminded me a lot of the Skin Walkers or Wendigo of native American lore. Was great to see that kind of concept done so beautifully! :)
Great list, alot of good ones on it. I was a little suprised that 'Frailty' wasn't on the list, but there were so many other good ones you listed that I let it slide. 👍
Frailty is very underrated. I've seen it several times and really enjoy it. It just flew under the radar. I tell people, go in blind. The less you know the better.
Terrifier is so gory and probably one of the meanest horror films ever. Art literally looked at the slasher handbook and said “nah” when he pulled out the gun 🤣
It's as close to torture porn as any production company within 2000 miles of Hollywood dare to make. I actually can't believe it's seen such wide distribution. I hate it on moral grounds.
How about Burnt Offerings (1976) it’s a really good choice because it’s very creepy, has an all star cast and has one of the scariest endings in horror movie history IMO.
Another movie I would recommend is 1964's _The Night Walker._ Directed by William Castle, it stars Robert Taylor and my relative Barbara Stanwyck, the latter of which being visited by a man in her dreams after her husband dies in an explosion. It's a good psychological horror movie with some good acting and genuinely creepy moments, like the wedding scene.
Thanks for this Mojo....Finally Session 9 gets some respect. Fantastic list - love these kind of movies and looking forward to all the ones I haven't seen.
I have seen all of these except Deathdream, Possession (I cannot find it) and Terrifier. Thanks for including Pontypool, which is extremely underrated & original. Eden Lake was so horrifying, I cried twice while watching it. The cast is superb. Inside is very scary! Great list!
One of the problems with Possession is that so many movies have the same or similar title. This one was made in 1981 and starred Sam Neil and Isabelle Adjani.
I did see Alice Sweet Alice a few years ago, I knew it was gonna be a crazy movie from the opening scene. It really was good and Paula Shepard the girl that played Alice was great. It doesn't get the recognition for being a good horror film.
bone tomahawk is a sensation. i´m 57 years old, i saw about 20K movies in my lifetime, only 3 times in my life i was shocked this much by a single moment in a movie.
@@vanesamalaga3100 when i was young, i was shocked extremely when in "jaws" the shark appeared the first time when roy scheider threw bait in the water, i was shocked extremely when in "the excorcist" linda blair turned the head all around her neck, and i was shocked the same when in fast cuts black and white samara came out of the tv in the u.s. remake of "ring". those and bone tomahawk are burnt into my rain :-)
If you haven't seen Terrifier yet here's a friendly word of warning: It is legit the bloodiest film ever. Yes, that's right even more gorey than the Saw and Hostel series
I actually felt like the blood/gore/violence was way overblown in reviews I had heard before watching it. But maybe I'm just jaded from all the fucked up movies I've seen lol.
I have seen 'The Ritual'. I went into it with low expectations and figured it would be cliche to a fault but instead, found a refreshingly well done and in my opinion, very well (but not perfect) paced horror movie that while it missed the mark here and there, it was still extremely good in a genre that is growing dull. I'd also add the movie on Hulu, "Pooka", another low expectation movie that delivered very strongly.
I thought for a moment you were talking about the original cats and I was gonna say why is it scary but then I realized you were talking about the new cats movie 😂
When that guy looks up at her from down stairs...🥺🥺🥺...that used to scare the shit out of me when I was a child, hell it gives me goosebumps thinking about it. Lol
I have seen some of them. The reason i watch them? I'm asian and like horror film but asian horror is too scary for me so i watch western horror instead.
I feel like the changeling (1980) should’ve made the list somewhere. Maybe just as an honorable mention. There’s not a lot of people I’ve met who’ve seen it and it’s really well done, and has some scary parts.
The autopsy of Jane Doe, and Terrifier is awesome. Some movies that I find very scary that isn't on this list is You're Next, As above so bellow, all three V/H/S movies, and both Unfriended movies. Unfriended: Dark Web is terrifying because it is something that CAN happen to any of us.
Session 9 does get under your skin. I watched it and thought, "that was an OK movie....was alright". Later that night I walked up to a friends house through a wooded trail and almost lost my fricken mind. I ran just like some girl in a horror flick and it was all in my head.
Session 9 is one of the scariest movies of all time. I would add to this list Observance, The Possession Of David O'Reilly, Lovely Molly and The Canal.
I can't believe they failed to mention that "Alice Sweet Alice" is the debut performance, and only horror credit, for the legendary actress and model Brooke Shields.
Eden Lake is truly astonishing. The old meme concerning the innocents from out of town ignoring every warning under the sun still manage to get tortured by the local tribe of teens. The ending is supposed to be a surprise, I think, but in this world of ours I would have been surprised had an alternate been used. It is violent, but this is not merely gratuitous as we rate the characters judgement and moral centers against this yardstick. This could have been just a slasher, but it is so much more.
I saw Alice sweet Alice when I was a young child. I'm 34 now and remembered that movie my whole life but never new what it was called until I saw this. I recognized it on the thumb nail immediately and clicked just to see the name of the movie.
I’ve seen 17/20...not sure if that makes me cutting edge or just a weirdo. Of all of these on the list Session 9 disturbed me the most and literally gave me nightmares. It seems fairly benign, but if you think about it being all too possible, and or worry about taking Gordon’s path yourself, it will keep you up for a few nights. Inside and Audition are hard to watch at times, but awesomely disturbing as well.
Alice, Sweet Alice! I have been trying to figure out what the name of that movie was. I watched it when I was 16 with a friend and it was scary. I was staying at her house anddidn't sleep so well. Thanks for this list, I'll be checking some of these out!
If you haven't seen 'The Haunting' in a theater, you really have not really experienced it. The jump scare near the end is enough to send people out of their seats. Literally. I adored this film as a child, but got to see it in a theater in college. No ghosts, no gore. Just brilliant filmmaking. 'Martin' is something you will not forget. Seriously weird.
Art the clown is a classic villain. Anyone that like horror/slashers/clown movies, it’s a must watch. He is the terrifier. Check out All Hallows’ Eve too
@@yanyansalvilla958 well it looked like the woman was going to escape but then the adults in the house she went to turned out to be just as bad as their children and they grab her, close the door and you just hear her screaming then the film ends
Some others that are lesser known that I really like: Hush, The Shrine, A Tale of Two Sisters, and The Wailing. These all are from different sub-genres of horror, and all are great to excellent.
Oh wow...I came across "The Haunting" (1963) a decade or so ago while looking for something interesting on tv during the Halloween season. Very good film.
It still holds up pretty well for an early ‘60s film. The fact we never see what is causing the sounds or whether the activity is real or in Eleanor’s head makes it more terrifying; plus it is in keeping with the novel
Re: POntypool: Haven't seen it, but the idea of a virus being transmitted by a sequence of words rather than contact is fucking terrifying...I feel like someone could take this premise and run with it in these times...but I suppose it would be a documentary rather than a feature.
I actually knew most of them but this is a great list and everything here deserves to be recognized. If I had a to pick one of the films to show it to someone it had to be the very unique Kill List.
Eyes Without a Face is one of my favorite horror films. It's gorgeous and so well done. Also I love Bunny Lake is Missing more thriller than horror but so good. And one film that no one ever mentions but it is one of my favorite Zombie films -called Mutants. A 2009 French film.

That hearse driver is freakin' creepy.
Thats a classic with trilogy of terror
YES I love that movie!!
That movie scared the sh$t out of me when i was a kid.the hearse driver coming up those stairs..the ending was very creepy
I'm a huge fan of the novel. The ending in the novel almost feels like Science Fiction ala 2001: A Space Odyssey.
I LOVE "The Night Walker". William Castle is the king of the "cozy horror"... Barbara Stanwyck is great, creepy sets, super cool theme tune...
"Eyes Without A Face" is rarely mentioned?? Billy Idol sang a whole song about it!!
The Netflix series of the haunting went beyond the original material, in my opinion its brilliant.
I like the brief explanations of each Honorable Mention. That's definitely an improvement.
I watched Eden Lake last night and thoroughly enjoyed it! Other underrated horror films I've seen are Baskin, Excision, and Cube.
Terrifier: a tribute to 80's horror. Gotta love it!
What we're the other 2 times?
Please tell us the other movies that shine
@@vanesamalaga3100 when i was young, i was shocked extremely when in "jaws" the shark appeared the first time when roy scheider threw bait in the water, i was shocked extremely when in "the excorcist" linda blair turned the head all around her neck, and i was shocked the same when in fast cuts black and white samara came out of the tv in the u.s. remake of "ring". those and bone tomahawk are burnt into my rain :-)
@@geraldherrmann787 those are some fair choices for shocking movie moments 👍
The Poughkeepsie tapes, Megan is Missing, Manhunt (2008), Hell hour LLC, Haute tension (aka Switchblade Romance), Grotesque, The corpse of Anna Fritz.
Interesting choices! Need to watch these myself.
If you haven't seen Terrifier yet here's a friendly word of warning:
It is legit the bloodiest film ever. Yes, that's right even more gorey than the Saw and Hostel series
I actually felt like the blood/gore/violence was way overblown in reviews I had heard before watching it. But maybe I'm just jaded from all the fucked up movies I've seen lol.
I agree that is is gory although it could do worse
Japanese horror movie
Ha! Just watch Dead Alive or Braindead (US name).
I know it was amazing
As a language nerd, I'm absolutely thrilled at "Pontypool"'s plot premise.
"Do you agree with our picks?" Well, first I am going to watch 20 horrorfilms I have not seen. I will tell you next Christmas.
It’s been a 6 months are you okay.
8 months now, you ok?
@@PonchoSaGo 🥲
9 months now are you okay?
It's been 10 months now and we have no answer yet... If you need help, send a signal!!!
Take a shot every time Rebecca says a variation on "Slow burn"
She constantly repeats the same phrases in every video. She totally sucks
Susan M Thank you!! I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed!
Noooo I need my liver
I doubt she writes the script
I think she has a fun voice.
I actually saw one of them, and it did NOT crack the Top 20! It was “Cam” by the way.
Yeah i like that one
That was more of a FoundFlix watch for me 😊
Eden Lake was great.
I liked Cam
Oliver Vergara ur not a horror fan if you didn’t like cam sryyyy!!!!
I never hear anyone mention The Collector. It's a very scary & creepy movie. There's also a sequel which I still haven't got the guts to watch.
I guess because it was a successful movie/s. The list is about unpopular/underrated movies.
The sequel is even better
I have seen 'The Ritual'. I went into it with low expectations and figured it would be cliche to a fault but instead, found a refreshingly well done and in my opinion, very well (but not perfect) paced horror movie that while it missed the mark here and there, it was still extremely good in a genre that is growing dull. I'd also add the movie on Hulu, "Pooka", another low expectation movie that delivered very strongly.
I thought CATS was a horror movie.
It is, it was just too scary to be on the list
I thought for a moment you were talking about the original cats and I was gonna say why is it scary but then I realized you were talking about the new cats movie 😂
@@vhs4239 lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
lololol funnnneeeee lololol
would recommend 'The Ritual' if you havent seen.. very underrated
What is it about
pepperX Trust me man just watch it
Yeah it's a good movie
When I saw it I was like "man they are just doing Blair Witch/Wicker Man again" then... yeah. I really like it.
Carnival of Souls deserves a lot more attention great movie.
Same with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
Yes! It was such a good movie!
I just watched that the other day, great movie!
When that guy looks up at her from down stairs...🥺🥺🥺...that used to scare the shit out of me when I was a child, hell it gives me goosebumps thinking about it. Lol
@aoggrta74 nice.
I saw CARNIVAL OF SOULS...on a sleepover when I was 8 or 9....I am 61 this year and have NEVER FORGOTTEN it...
Lock me up with Michael Myers before I spend a day with Joseph from Creep. That movie is something else.
EDEN LAKE!!! love that film..it makes you grunt when the protagonists get the upper hand but then..
I have seen some of them. The reason i watch them?
I'm asian and like horror film but asian horror is too scary for me so i watch western horror instead.
I’ve seen a few Asian horror films, and I agree that they are too scary.
any recommendation? Ju-On is one of my favourites movies...
Geralt The Rivia yeah, Western horror, the famous ones at least, are more goofy than scarier.
Not like Turkish horror! Especially seccin
@@avatt6229 watched the first one and it was a really nice surprise.
I was expecting that ‘Grave Encounters 1’ will make it on the list. That film gave me series of nightmares after watching it.
Let's Scare Jessica to Death is a pretty creepy little thriller. And I loved The Strange Vengeance of Rosalie with Bonnie Bedelia.
Session 9 does get under your skin. I watched it and thought, "that was an OK movie....was alright". Later that night I walked up to a friends house through a wooded trail and almost lost my fricken mind. I ran just like some girl in a horror flick and it was all in my head.
I saw Terrifier in the theater just yesterday. Still holds up. Love it.
The Invitation is so underrated. It’s definitely my top 5 favorite.
Session 9 is one of the scariest movies of all time. I would add to this list Observance, The Possession Of David O'Reilly, Lovely Molly and The Canal.
2k(
Totally agree that Session 9 is a winner. I can watch almost anything at night except for that one.
This could have been just a slasher, but it is so much more.
thanks for mentioning "Carnival on Souls"! underrepresented and underrated classic!
Bone tomahawk is freaking amazing! I was not ready! So true about that "one scene" I can still see it!
"Creep" was alright. The follow up to that was better. And "Session 9" was surprisingly good.
I tried to watch Session 9, but I was so bored. I watched over half an hour of the movie and was bored to tears.
I loved the Creep movies. I hope 3 comes out soon. And Session 9 is so underrated.
Creep is a fun watch when ur with friends
Creep 2004 is better
I actually just watched Terrifier for the first time like last week...so thanks to James A Janisse for that one!! 😂☹️
Exactly
Deeban SSG lol it was something else that’s for sure! 😳
I just watched it for the first time last week too. It was so weird. 😂😂
Shoutout to DeadMeat lol
I'm waiying for teriffier 2
Great list filled with great suggestions.
Art the clown is a classic villain. Anyone that like horror/slashers/clown movies, it’s a must watch. He is the terrifier. Check out All Hallows’ Eve too
“Audition” is an incredible horror movie !
*I was only able to watch that ONCE!* Just too disturbing for a second ride...
@@themirrorsofmymind true ! It makes Stephen King’s Misery look like a Tom & Jerry episode
@@pedrofelipepamplona1944 Pretty much... 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨
Bone tomahawk was the scariest movie I've ever seen. You'll be unable to watch it twice however it is very underappreciated
Eyes Without a Face and Carnival of Souls are two of my all-time favorites.
Saw Creep, loved it, great build up!
YES! Finally The Invitation gets some love!
Also, would like to see you guys talk about Jack Goes Home!
Alice sweet alice is one of my favorite horror movies.
Eden Lake has such a disturbing ending...took me awhile to get over seeing it
@@yanyansalvilla958 well it looked like the woman was going to escape but then the adults in the house she went to turned out to be just as bad as their children and they grab her, close the door and you just hear her screaming then the film ends
@@yanyansalvilla958 you’re welcome
Creep is sooo underrated. Both 1 and 2 are so creepy.
Creep is an great example of how you don’t know what someone’s true motives are
Some others that are lesser known that I really like: Hush, The Shrine, A Tale of Two Sisters, and The Wailing. These all are from different sub-genres of horror, and all are great to excellent.
The Wailing is literally one of the best horror movies of all time IMO
I've found most B-rated movies are pretty good.
I own most B rated movies on Blu Ray
I've never seen a film with a "B" rating.
Ali Riley Stephen kings Cell. It’s got Sam Jackson and John cusak. It’s transmitted through sounds.
@@GiDD504 But Pontypool isn't about "sounds." it's about linguistics.
@@ObscuredByTime ok
I actually knew most of them but this is a great list and everything here deserves to be recognized. If I had a to pick one of the films to show it to someone it had to be the very unique Kill List.
I love that Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were given a spot in this video. They are both incredibly underrated artists.
Eyes Without a Face is one of my favorite horror films. It's gorgeous and so well done. Also I love Bunny Lake is Missing more thriller than horror but so good. And one film that no one ever mentions but it is one of my favorite Zombie films -called Mutants. A 2009 French film.
Ohhh yes Bunny Lake is a great movie, with the beautiful late Carol Linley and it keeps you guessing right till the end...
I actually really like The Haunting (1999) ever since I saw it for the first time when I was around 12 years old. And I can still enjoy it today.
Me too!
THE RITUAL WAS SO FREAKING GOOD
