I was (and am) such a fan of Night Breed. Clive Barker comes up with some truly unsettling ideas, but this film, beginning in media res, gives us hints at a far, far more vast world than one movie could contain. I still have the coffee-table art book that was published soon after, with pictures of all the cast members in full makeup, even ones we saw only for a handful of seconds. It gives a backstory for each one. I love it.
The highly likely possibility is that every single movie, tv show and fiction we like now will be forgotten or treated as relic of the past in 2100 or even 2050. That completely breaks my heart.
You're preaching the gospel, man. The Burning is a classic! The scene on the raft still holds up today as being one of the most violent and realistic kills in horror/slasher history.
I can't recommend Martin and Deathdream enough. Martin seems better known, but Deathdream is worth your time. I'd argue both movies are early examples of what some people call "elevated horror." Another little known classic which never makes these lists is Let's Scare Jessica to Death.
Great list! My lesser known movies that I adored is Pin (or A Plastic Nightmare, 1988), a Canadian phycological horror that is as unique as it is small. Also Barracuda (1997), a French movie that is unhinged and with superb acting. Calvaire (20040 is another French gem too!
Uzumaki, Cure, House of the Devil, Black Sabbath. Also, Tales From the Crypt is pretty well-known, so try The House That Dripped Blood, Asylum, or From Beyond the Grave if you want British horror anthologies - or the TV series Thriller (the UK one, not the Boris Karloff one).
One movie that should have Been on this List is (DEAD SNOW) it’s a movie about a Group of Campers that are Attacked by a platoon of Nazi Zombies after they discover Old Nazi Gold
Alice Sweet Alice scared the hell out of me as a kid, especially because I was in catholic school at the time I first watched it. Great movie that is very underrated. On another note, movie music scores from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s really helped make horror movies great.
Pontypool is def the best movie on this list, but holy SH*T Creep was one terrifying movie. Like, the window scene legit had me pulling the covers over my head. At the time of this comment, I'm 16 years old. I watched Creep when I was 13, and keep in mind I saw Insidious, Hereditary, and The Conjuring before then, and I was not as creeped out with any of those movies as I was with Creep. Also why the heck isn't Benny Loves You on this list?
Bone Tomahawk is AMAZING and disturbing. I love it!! And watch Pontypool if you haven't! And The Changeling should be in the top 10 of everyone's list. So creepy. That wheelchair and the whispered, "Jos...eph..." WOW. Talk about your hair standing on end!!
You should do a best horror series like Masters of Horror or Fear Itself. Or great not well known comedy horrors like Dead and Breakfast and my one of my favorites, Doghouse!
Wow.... I didn't think watchmojo would ever produce an answer for a question I've had for the longest time. God told me too is a title I've been looking for, for over 15 years. I saw it on TV one night on Starz or some channel, honestly can't remember, but it was 2am and unfortunately I never got the name of the film. I never realized that was ANDY KAUFMAN! Seriously... had I'd known that I wouldn't have had an unanswered question for so long. Definitely a good flick, a little tame for today's standards but still worth a watch!
Some truly excellent films on this list. My tip for an underappreciated horror film is one that creeped me out seriously when I watched it as a kid, and held up very well when I watched again not too long ago as an adult: Blood on Satan's Claw. The title is campy, but the movie starts with a truly unsettling image and really builds tension from there. Plus for Doctor Who fans, it features Anthony Ainley (the Master) and Wendy Padbury (Zoe). Also altogether underappreciated, Jacob's Ladder, a film that's disturbing on so many levels...
You included the wrong "Creep". There's a 2004 film by the same name that stars Franka Potente and Sean Harris which nobody seems to have heard of let alone seen. It's fantastic too, a real undiscovered gem.
@@Mac_Kymera I'm personally not a fan of the horror genre/sub-genres but I love this film. I'm always trying to get people to watch it but it's almost impossible to find unless you buy a hard copy. The sound the Creep makes lives rent free in my head 😂
"The Black Cat" is so underappreciated in many ways... the dark tone of the movie, the acting, the horror of human nature and the fact we got the horror icons Lugosi and Karloff in such a great movie is mind blowing imo the movie is a masterpiece
There were easily a couple movies I feel should be mentioned: Curtains, The Hills Run Red, Madhouse (1974). However I’m gonna give my top pick to William Lustig’s Maniac (1980). Joe Spinell is tremendously sick in all the right ways in that film.
A huge chunk of these movies are movies both my wife and I have seen. If you're watching this list, and haven't actually seen a lot of these movies, I strongly encourage not only signing up for Shudder, but keeping up with THE LAST DRIVE-IN hosted by under appreciated icon Joe Bob Briggs.
Cam, Lake Mungo, and Saint Maud were all in English and made since the late 2000's. But, I can definitely attest that the Majority of these movies are excellent 👍😊!
Oh god, I could never forget X-tro ( or however it's spelled ), that poor woman giving birth to that full sized man, jesus christ!! And Lets Scare Jessica to Death is one of Stephen Kings fave movies!

Seen a handful. I knew a lass who said Eden Lake was her fave movie of all time. I love horrors, the more bloody and disturbing the better, and decided to watch it. Must have been how vile the kids were because that was just nightmare inducing and I got freaked out.
Some of those top 15 are some of my fav movies ever. Kill list is so great. The invitation, pontypool, autopsy of Jane doe. I think the void should be on this list as well. Unless I missed it. Crazy body horror. Claustrophobic hospital. Creepy horror paranormal cult. It’s a good one.
Wait until dark as an excellent movie. I never knew it was based on a play but I should have figured that out because it is filmed in the same way a play might be filmed

‘Alice, Sweet Alice’ = Another pretty good underrated slasher movie.
Two years before John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’ came out.
“Alice Sweet Alice” made quite the splash at the time, and among big fans of 1970s horror, it’s still highly revered.
