While it kind of grosses me out how "Black Friday" has come to encompass more of November every year, I do also like the fact that in some cases that means having a larger window to consider a sale, rather than feeling like I need to buy something the instant I see it.

Yes! I hate it when I have 24h or less to decide or I’m going to miss the discount. I think more time actually helps you have time to ponder your purchases.

My approach is to focus on my house, microwave blew up, old toaster, coffee maker died. I used saved gift cards & replaced these needed items on sale. Also reminded myself & the family, being housed, fed, warm & together with our beloved cat were Christmas gifts aplenty. No Lisa Eldridge palette can replace that!

I plan for Black Friday deals all year and hold off purchasing items for Black Friday sales, pre shop and have a plan for when it comes. It’s a big help and I save a lot of money on things I need.

The “am I looking for something to want” is dead-on, such a good way of describing what Black Friday sales do to you mentally. It’s such a good deal, there must be something I need to buy.

I must say….I’m pretty freaking proud of myself. I received a mini IT Hero mascara about a year ago, and absolutely loved it. I have never purchase a high end mascara in my life. After using the mini mascara, I thought about, and wanted, a full sized IT mascara so badly. Every time I put on my makeup I would crave that high end mascara. I literally stopped myself from buying that mascara several, several times, because I couldn’t imagine spending 28-30 bucks on mascara. I waited patiently for it to go on sale, and it did for Black Friday! Yay! I just ordered it for 12 bucks! I’m so excited to get this order, and I’m so proud I fought the urge for so long, saved money, and avoided a lot of guilt if I would’ve paid full price. 🙏🏼

My strategy is to set a budget weeks before the sales start so I'm calm and rational about it
And then make a list without looking at the emails
If I didn't remembered wanting a thing before seeing them there is probably a reason
I also try to focus on needs because my budget is pretty tight and it helps to free it a little in future months 🤷🏻‍♀️
May all of us do what is best for us this sales season 💪🏻

When I found out I was pregnant at 3 weeks I started a budget for baby gear: stroller, monitor, car seat, etc. I set specific savings goals: $209.13 for the Dagne Dover diaper bag after taxes. I put $36.74 towards it every month. I just caught it on a Black Friday sale for $161 allowing me to move the extra money towards other savings goals. I’ve been tracking sales all year only buying registered products when they’re 25% off or more. I have $1,207.64 saved specially for Black Friday baby sales and I’m pretty psyched about it in a calm and intentional way. I was telling my husband that the act of “spending” $36.74 on a bag every months gives my the same thrill as buying that bag 8 times.

For the last 3 years I’ve been buying all my core skin care and haircare products during Black Friday sales and then I don’t purchase anymore for the rest of the year. This works for me for these items and also for things like a major appliance purchase such as the Samsung bespoke vacuum that we just purchased yesterday but I have to stay away from clothing and jewelry websites because those are things that I would just find something to want. For me it Hass to be something that I was already thinking about getting and actually planned to buy or truly need.

I decided to only shop a necessary vacuum cleaner, because my old one died a few weeks ago, and with the sales going on I can afford a good one. Now I luckily don't have to finance it. But oh girl, the Lethal Cosmetics collection reveal from today has me in a chokehold. But a necessity has priority to fun stuff. Hannah, I recently found your channel and you have helped me immensely. I can totally identify with having a shopping prblem. I did a no-buy in October and am trying to do the same in November. I've been watching whatever videos show up. The universe never ceases to amaze me. It gives me exactly what I need at the right time. The last video I just watched was 11 months ago, about Sadie. My heart went out to you! The 14th of this November we lost our cat of 21 years. She was a stray who came out of the shadows at night while we sat in the breezeway. We started feeding her. She was a little black cat with big green eyes. Her fur was like velvet. We named her Shadow. But she became my shadow! Followed me all over and slept with me every night. She was the last of our pets. We had 2 dogs, 3 cats, and my son's ferrit. Part of owning a pet is knowing when it is time to let go and it is the hardest thing to do! They don't live as long as we do. I had cried & grieved for the last 10 days she was still with us. I knew what was coming. The next day I said to my husband the house was empty and there was such a void. He gently said, no pressure, no expectations. Just see what's at the pound. I felt like I was dishonoring Shadow by getting another. My family and friends all said no, you're honoring her by giving your love and home to a stray. When my son's cat died he did wait a month. Said he regretted that. So I don't know how I did it but I went! Found a 4 month old stray with a tortoise shell coat. We bonded right then! We named her Magic & she is! I will always miss Shadow but it's OK to love again! And we do love Magic already. I believe Shadow had a hand in all this! She's alot like Shadow in many ways. Yes, the universe amazes me! PS. I'm taking your video on the gentle shag with me my next haircut! I've been growing in my shorter shag. Love yours!

Keep track of your spending. That’s the only part I was missing. I have been taking advantage of the sales for Xmas gifts. It’s the most shopping I’ve done at once in this, my no buy year. As I head out of it in 2023, I’m actually considering repeating it (or at least low buying it) and I’ll be adding the tracking component to my financial New Year’s resolutions. Thank you Hannah. Big event sales like Black Friday definately encouraged me to buy and hoard more than I needed. Along the same line of thinking, I have stopped bulk buying a lot of things and buying mini/smaller sized items instead of the full size. I used to be a couponer and picked up hoarding from my mom so I was spending a lot of money on things I felt (at the time) I was saving tons of money on that I would definately use at a later time. But the reality is, I would have saved more money by buying things when I needed them (even at full price) since I was not able to use things up before the expiration date. For example, I got a good deal on Aquaphor so I bought a bunch, not realizing that it takes me over a year to use up a single 1.75oz tube. I only used up 2 tubes before the rest of my stash expired. I know it's just petroleumm jelly but I'm a bit of a germaphobe and the idea of putting an expired product on my face grossed me out so much, I just avoided it until the products were many years past the expiration date that I had to throw them away, making it a big waste of money.
And even in my 20s when I was wearing makeup every day, I never really used up items with a shorter shelf life like mascara before the expiration date. So even though you save more by buying the full sized version for certain items, what works better for me is to stick with the mini size since I know won't be wasting money or product this way.

thanks, Hannah! I have been tempted to fill shopping carts of makeup that's on sale because "it's a great deal", but at the same time I am in a phase of my life where my makeup tastes seem to be changing towards more simple looks that don't even require all the makeup that is still on my wishlists. Buying one high-quality product that I know will work hard in my collection makes a lot more sense than buying as many things as I can because they're pretty and on sale. Your channel always helps me with pulling the brakes before I make stupid purchases that will do nothing to change my life anyway.

There was a one hour flash sale on a small jewelry brand Rare Romance yesterday around 4PM pst, and I have wanted some earrings from them since February, like black spiked heart hoops, and some silver flame drop designs. They were finally 50% off, and they say it's not gonna be done again, at least this year, so I took advantage of the sale because it was a big discount. I found myself looking for other things I might want, but their mini gold spiked hoops (the only other thing I wanted) were sold out. I almost settled for something else, but I knew it wasn't exactly what I wanted, so I held firm.

I’ve been laid up with a broken foot for the past 2.5 weeks, during which I’ve watched COUNTLESS hours of makeup UA-cam. I’ve added and removed dozens of items from my Ulta, Sephora and Colourpop carts, and favorited dozens more on thredUP. I’m on a Low Buy - technically it’s a No Buy but with $15/week to use for all of the fun stuff, because that’s just a little bit of money no big deal OR it’s $700 in a year if i don’t waste it. So I had a little bit to spend, all kinds of stuff in my carts, and THE SALE breathing down my neck. Turns out, the only items I want that were affected by the sale were 2 Colourpop palettes. Nothing else is discounted or a high enough priority to make it worthwhile.
Now, that brick red Babaa turtleneck sweater has me completely entranced but thankfully it’s no longer on their website!!

Instead of getting myself something for black Friday simply because it was on sale and I didn't even need/want it.. I took the $50 i would've spent (at least $50) and I got on salvation army website and went to their angel tree and got $50 worth of baby toys from the registry for sweet babies that don't get things for christmas... so maybe that's an idea for other people to do.. if you find yourself looooking for something to want.. take even just $20 go to the angel tree online and buy some toys for kids. Chances are you don't need whatever you're looking at getting anyways. Just an idea for people to spend money that way!

I am really not a typical person when it comes to shopping and sales. Hear my story: during the second part of a year a delay buying some items because I believe I can shop for it on Black Friday. I just put items on the list (my husband and I do that collectively, actually). Then when sale starts I notice that buying everything from the list will be more then I want to spend. So I filter the list and some things leave behind. For the past 3 years I want to by NU Face on sale but I just cross it from the list because there are other things more important to me.
And this is not a problem of money, I can afford everything from the list but I get overwhelmed when I see long list and realize that I can not possibly NEED all that.

  • @mashantha

What a brilliant video Hannah! Sharing some additional things that help me:
    1. Recalling the # of items I own in that category / realizing the number of times I've used it once. For e.g., I was super tempted by the Pat McGrath sale this year, but I stopped myself from buying any Mothership palette. My rationale: I bought the Midnight Sun palette in June this year but I have used it only twice so far! Suddenly, I wasn't tempted any more :)
    2. Allowing myself to buy only those products that I have wish listed for at least 6 months. So even though I am shopping this year, I know I am buying products that I've wanted for a while and not losing myself "in a trance" like you say.
Lots of love; for you and your amazing channel.

I am very anti spend when it comes to the Advent-Christmas holidays. Such an overly commercial and consumeristic season, when it should be a spiritual time, no matter what faith you believe (Advent historically was, and still is for some, a time of reflection, preparation, and of fasting and prayer), and a good time to reflect on the blessing of being human and to be able to cherish the love and friendship of significant others. I did ok in November...I only shopped oden's eye and spent $72 in terms of makeup.
The rest ($350) was spent on a t.v. my husband and I have been wanting for our room for years. Overall, my restraint could have been better but could have been worse. I really didn't need 14 eyeshadow palettes in 2 months considering I already have 50+.

So far this year, my black friday wishlist/planned spend is less than £100 including shipping but would have been closer to £200 otherwise. I'm willing to buy these things full price but I don't want to do that if I can save money, especially for things I repurchase regularly. I put in a lot of thought about how to prioritise the things I want and how not to overspend. I try to be objective with my purchasing decisions so I don't have repeats and only buy things that fill a hole in my collection. Over the last few years, I've really honed in on what kind of products I don't like using and just appreciate them from afar instead.

i think this is my new favorite video ever
long story (sorry) i'm sixteen and i just landed my first job a few months ago so my mom let me open a checking account with her. i got my first debit card and all of a sudden its sale and holiday season so i have spent more money than i have maybe ever? even though every package that arrives home never seem to make me happier, i get so excited to get an email from a brand announcing a new sale, reward or coupon etc. i get fomo and the last chance urgency because my family didn't have the means to buy much "stuff" so i always felt like i was missing out on hobbies or the latest trend everyone in my area was wearing for the next few weeks. its a big relief for me to see an adult explaining how to help manage these emotions, sustaining previous purchases and reaffirming "think before you buy" . this video is so helpful and came right at the perfect time for me so thank you so much hannah

Ulta is having a Black Friday sale with many mascaras half off. One of my favorites, Tarte Maneater, is on sale. I went to Ulta today, bought two tubes of Maneater and left, (didn’t let myself wander around looking at the gift sets or other Black Friday deals). I will defiantly use these up before I buy more mascara, so I left feeling good about my purchase. These two tubes of mascara may be the only Black Friday purchase I make.

This was such a great resources that I will keep coming back to! This year has been particularly odd because as I am doing my no- buy year I actually have had to buy more things than I ever had before. I have been working on my mental health and body image etc and found that I had no clothes other than my high school clothes that barely fit and were falling apart, on top of just the fact I hadn't been taking care of myself.
So as I have had to rework my budget because of all the unexpected things I needed to actually care for my body I've had to keep reminding myself "You don't need everything all at once" and I've been trying to break it down into sections (ex buying all my basics in sizes that actually fit, then moving on to playing with fashion/makeup etc etc) and being kind to myself as I accept the fact that I am not a particular size etc and I suppose breaking down my own smoke and mirrors for how I think I should look/ how society advertises people should look. So I've been re-watching a lot of your reviews and what's cheering me up videos because they have honestly been such a good starting point for me to break down this large task of essentially building up my self care.

This sale season I risked "the trance" quite often but managed to make just a few well thought purchases.
Practical example: I've been wanting the glass skin primer from Natasha Denona for months and I waited, thinking that I'd get a reasonable deal with the Sephora sale or even Black Friday.
Of course ND rarely goes on sale so, the second I saw the primer was on sale I added it to cart immediately.
A combination of circumstances resulted in me not buying it, because in the end, despite the codes and discounts, the price was still too high for me to justify the buy.
Now I'm thanking whatever entity stopped my hand from adding it to the cart because I just realized the bottle is only 20 ml.
TWENTY ml! I never really checked but I thought it was at least 30 or even 50 ml like other primers.
Glad I didn't buy it! And I also realized I already have a similar (not a proper dupe) product in my collection that deserves more love.

A few months ago I found myself interested in a product. I signed up for notifications. I figured if they offered a sale I might take advantage. Beginning at midnight on Thanksgiving they sent no less than a dozen texts and emails. I unsubscribed. Fomo has been my biggest hurdle with Black Friday and I finally feel like I'm gradually getting through it. I keep a few companies' updates on for specific items I'd like at some point, but no more just for its own sake, and it feels good.

I'm super proud of myself during this bf frenzy tbh. Not only have I only broken my nobuy from end of august ONCE but I managed to place just three very small orders from three different brands, of items that have been on my wishlist. I ended up spending a total of $100 (across three indie brands) which is in stark contrast to previous years. 🤗🙌

I participated in black friday this year for the first time in a while, and felt a little weird about it (because it's usually a bit of a point of pride for me to NOT get involved) - but, after watching this video, I'm proud to say I was generally following the philosophies you outlined here :) I bought 2 things I'd been needing and was glad to save money on (a vacuum and a new phone case), and a new watch I'd been thinking about for over a year but hadn't felt ready to pull the trigger on until it fit into my budget better (which, thanks to a sale, it did!). I really enjoy the way you distilled these 2 great questions to ask oneself during The Frenzy; they'll definitely help me be more mindful in the future!

Thank you once again for another amazing resource!

    Oh yeah.. helpful!
In California we pay 10% sales tax, so 20%.. or even 30% isn’t really that deep of a sale..
I tend to stalk items, so if they go on sale I’ve already done some research..
I also stalk up on skincare during Black Friday or Cyber Monday. One thing I have cut WAY down on is
Impulse purchasing. I don’t feel like I’m missing out at all.

I watched you on TFD months ago and what you said really resonated with me. I watched this and yesterday it stopped me in my steps from buying something I truly didn’t want. I was looking for something to want. Turns out I just wanted to look at things and I was able to appreciate it without buying it.
I just wish I saw this video during black friday and not after 😂 oopsie! Luckily the most expensive thing I bought is refundable. However, I still feel shame about it even though it perhaps would be an investment in my hobby. I just don’t like seeing my balance go under a certain amount. (Even though that amount I have left is more than liveable, perhaps 5 months of rent lol)
Also, as an artist, i find that when i feel disatisfied with my art i start buying clothes or stuff. It’s like what you said. Idk, you’re just so spot on! Thank you

My rule of thumb for Black Friday, or any big "savings event" is that I only purchase items that have been on my wish list for over 6 months. And even then, I'm not buying everything on my wish list, only those couple items that I've reeaaalllly been patiently waiting for to buy. Splurge purchases have led to nothing but regret, because it wasn't something I actually needed or wanted - it was something that seemed like a "good deal" at the time. But "good deals" are only good deals if you would have bought that item at full price. A good deal isn't something that you buy on sale that you never had any intention of purchasing to begin with - that's just wasted money.
NOW. That being said. Yes, I did just buy a Pat McGrath lipstick for $17 (Canadian site) because free shipping and it's something I would never ever buy unless it was heavily discounted.

Love this kind of content, especially from you! Unlike the last black Friday before meeting you(virtually) I bought a replacement for my favorite eye primer since I only had one I hated left and a replacement liquid eyeliner 'cause I opened the last fresh one last month and I tend to run one of them dry every 3-4 months. I may buy a replacement blush but most likely won't cause I'm a new mom, I still have some of it left and plenty other blushes.
Plus...other sales will come again. If I don't buy it now I'll buy it in a few months, and if I wait till the next black Friday nothing will change in my life. I know I will buy a fresh one eventually but the power of personally controlling when that will happen is freeing

I made a list of 3 shops where I have wanted items but wasn’t willing to pay full price, I even gave myself a discount minimum. For example I wanted some desk items from muni and said if it was 30% or more I would get them. While I did see a many other emails come through I resisted and stuck to my list. So I didn’t buy anything I wasn’t already eyeing for months and I didn’t get anything outside my budget. I did at one point feel all the trance items you mentioned but managed to click away ❤

I’m very disciplined and thoughtful about my purchases during the rest of the year, but there’s just something about this season that makes me throw caution to the wind. Just a few hours ago I literally stopped myself before hitting the purchase button on a Celine handbag I found a deliciously good deal on via eBay. I was In the Trance!
