If your microwave has a humidity sensor, the popcorn button will always be your best bet. The reason most popcorn bags have "Do not use popcorn button" on them is because the popcorn producer doesn't know what kind of microwave you have and they don't want you to get a bad impression of their popcorn from user error. If you don't know whether your microwave has a humidity sensor, you can try the popcorn button, if it asks you for the weight or size of the bag, it just has some pre-programmed timers that aren't worth using. Mine has some sort of microphone, it asks for weight of the bag. But when I play my snare drum in the kitchen while popcorn is popping it stops in a few seconds. That was a fun experiment while my girls were gone and I was bored.
@@brutalbasspro Technology Connections mentions those as well, the mic waits for a 2 second pause between pops as per the instructions on most popcorn bags and turns off when it detects it, that works pretty well too, although i wonder why yours asks for the weight anyways.
*Perfect Popcorn Recipe:* 1. Pour a little oil in the pot; 2tbsp for every 1/3 cup kernels. 2. Set to medium heat (around 4-6 depending on your stovetop). 3. Put 3 kernels into the oil, and put the lid on. 4. In a few minutes, the kernels will begin to pop, and it's time to add in the rest of the popcorn (this means the oil is ready). 5. Moving the pot around occasionally, wait for all of your kernels to pop. 6. When done popping, pour into bowl. It’s 30 cals for a POPPED cup in Skinny Pop, so the whole bag is 75 cals. My "friend" burnt popcorn in MY dorm and set the alarms off!! I was freaking framed! Very embarrassing when everyone who was asleep was woken up and saw which dorm the alarm came from.
One popcorn trauma story for another- I once insisted I could make popcorn to use a totally different microwave and burn the popcorn TWICE. I am the problem. But I swear to god at home I make the best popcorn
Back in middle school when they were advertising movie night with paper fliers, we n my friend would remove the “pco” letters off the word popcorn and thought we were comedy geniuses

Straight up I would ABSOLUTELY be behind you doing a few of these throughout the year---or even just one or two because all of them are really heckin' fun!!! I think focusing on things/topics that are rather mundane and doing this "complex" insight into stuff that is just inconsequential in the grand scheme of things and that light-hearted fixation is just...fun, dude. This series is something I just feel like we all need right now---So keep on doing these until you yourself no longer find fun in them and I don't think anyone would argue over you doing more of this series.
Technology Connections has a great video explaining why popcorn packaging often tells you not to use the microwave's popcorn button and how some microwaves sense poppedness - it's fascinating!
I just commented about that too, then was like, I bet hundreds of people have already commented that, but I haven’t seen as many people mention it as I thought I would.
These videos remind me of this one time about 8 years ago, my dad went to all the pizza chains and bought a pepperoni pizza from all of them to find out who was the best of the worst. It was amazing
I’m a college student. I have my mom’s popcorn maker from the 80s when she was in college. It’s like a cylinder thing and a lid and hole where they spin around and pop out. They fly out like a machine gun and when they fly they go far so I have to hold a paper towel in front. It may be a fire hazard, but it’s my fire hazard. And I just get basic popcorn kernels. My roomates love it.
I as well have my mom's air popper from the 80s. That thing *will not die*. It will make popcorn far into my Adulthood. It will make popcorn for my grandchildren. It will probably still be making popcorn when I am long gone.
Love the easter eggs to the cramer games with you guys wearing the old and what appears to be new shirt. Fingers crossed that this will be the next video!
After last year’s chewing gum takedown and this year’s exposé on popcorn, can’t wait to see what big snack industry Scott will tackle next. Will it be pretzels? Gummy bears maybe? Possible be the humble potato chip? Perhaps a turn into the world of drinks with the bottled water industry or even the powdered drink mix monoliths.
My highly scientific (4th graders almost 20 years ago) study concluded that Orville was telling the truth. It had the largest corn size and least amount of unpopped kernels. I've held onto that ever since and have put faith in the redenbacher as my go to microwave popcorn snack.
Please keep making this series. I love the comparison of at home brands in a scientific and professional laboratory. Thank you for doing the research for all of us.
I love that Scott evolved into his final form: super dad who will talk your ears off about popcorn because “the SCIENCE KID! The gosh darn pop corn science!”
Oh God, the clocks being off drives me nuts too. My wife thinks I'm weird cause I will sit there and try to get them perfect within a second or two lol
Feel like this could be a food theory. - does the popcorn button matter - different “hacks” to make them pop all the kernels such as freezing the bag. Etc.
Technology Connections has a good video on it. Basically the bags say don't use the popcorn button because sometimes the popcorn button just sets a preset time and sometimes the popcorn button uses actual sensors in the microwave, and they don't know what your microwave can do.
When my sister was in like 4th grade her science fair project was basically this lol making a shit ton of different brands of popcorn, counting how many pieces popped and how many unpopped kernels were left, figuring out the percentages of unpopped, calculating which one you get the most out of for its price, etc. This was like 1994 lol but at the time Pop Secret ended up being the head honcho. Also you couldn't order things online back then so it was, like this, just whatever brands they sold at our local stores lol I loved it bc there was popcorn at all times for days and I didn't have to do any of the work 😂 Edit: damn looks like pop secret is still on top lol noice
I did a science fair project about microwave popcorn in elementary school! Basically we got a bunch of different brands from the store (the only ones I remember were Orville Redenbacher, Pop Secret, Newman's Own, and generic store brand) and I think there were three times we tried, to best control for popping time, and we just wanted to see which brand left the fewest kernels. From what I recall I think Orville Redenbacher was our best performing brand, and Newman's Own was the worst (forgive me, it's been 15 years). So often your videos are entertaining on their own, but this was such a fun nostalgia trip too!
10:50 i FREAKING KNEW IT!! Skinny pop is literally the same as regular pop corn, I never looked into why it was called skinny but every time i ate it, i was like this is literally the same but probably a little less butter and salt. THANK YOU!
*Hungrily Licks the bag* "If you all were dipped in oil and covered in butter, I think that you would be the biggest, fluffiest popcorn that there is." LOL! 🤣🤣🤣
I am so happy to see someone else who enjoys ripping and licking the bag. I do it everytime! Not all of it, just a little 😂 the salty butter is so irresistible.
Scott, I just want to say thank you. As someone with a boatload of mental health disorders and is going through a lot of shitty situations at the moment, your channel remains one of the safest places in the world to me. We’re from very different places with very different cultures but your cozy and positive vibes are transcendent. Thank you for making me feel like the smallest things are worth living for. You will forever be one of my favorite people on this planet.
Those half popped kernels from the black jewell bag are definitely some of my favourite parts of the popcorn to eat. Someone needs to make them a snack, half popped kernels. I'd buy, they're so good!
The reason all the bags are brown is because it’s cheaper to make. Any paper based product that isn’t brown had to go through an additional processing step to bleach it. Unbleached pulp is cheaper
I love that you did this video, i just recently discovered the craziness that is popcorn calories and how freaking confusing they are! Im glad to know im not alone!
technology connections has a good video on the existence of the popcorn button and the number unpopped kernels at the bottom of the bag i believe is dependent on the moisture within the kernels itself
Yeah, I grew popcorn and first you had to let it dry. Then if it wasn’t popping well, you needed to sprinkle some water in the storage container That’s also what I would expect from that black popcorn. It’s probably from heritage breeds of popcorn so it’s not going to pop as well
The waxy film on the Jolly Time popcorn is unfortunately the hydrogenated oil they use. Super terrible for you. 😬 But like your wife, it used to be my favorite. And I also licked the bag. 😂😂😂
My method is to do 1 minute more than the box suggests and then listen for the popping to stop...ping. it works pretty well. Back in the day, my dad used the popcorn button and filled the house with smoke. So we dont use that button anymore
For people without smart microwaves, the popcorn button might show 'random' numbers. Those numbers correlate to the weight of your bag of popcorn. For example, on mine, for me to pop a full sized bag, I have to press the button three times, which puts my microwave on 3.5 (3.5 oz bag)
If your microwave is asking for the bag size, then it is not "smart", and got the lazy treatment. Microwaves that ask for the size just use a pre-programmed time based on that size. However, there are some microwaves that use an actual sensor to determine when the bag bursts, and uses the time between turning on the magnetron (the thing that makes the microwaves) and detecting the bag being burst to determine how much longer to cook it. There is a very good video by technology connections that explains this better than I did, that I would highly recommend.
I love how Scott literally never talks about stuff that stresses me out. Like I love video essays about politics and civil rights and social issues, but sometimes I just need a completely inconsequential video.
I love these "Exposing Industry" videos and this one was amazing! But can we also talk about those Cramer Games shirts... 👀 I'm so hyped! I saw Greg wearing his and thought it could be a sign... then Scott had a new one at the end of the video.

I must share a story of popcorn trauma. A "friend" is hanging out with me in my dorm at 2am. I leave to switch my laundry over. Suddenly the fire alarms are going off. My "friend" burnt popcorn in MY dorm and set the alarms off!! I was freaking framed! Very embarrassing when everyone who was asleep was woken up and saw which dorm the alarm came from.
Also I love this series. I don't think it's ready to die just yet.
One popcorn trauma story for another- I once insisted I could make popcorn to use a totally different microwave and burn the popcorn TWICE. I am the problem. But I swear to god at home I make the best popcorn
I popped my own popcorn on the stove for the first time recently- I'm never going back.
Back in middle school when they were advertising movie night with paper fliers, we n my friend would remove the “pco” letters off the word popcorn and thought we were comedy geniuses
What’s your guys’ favorite popcorn? Mines gotta be white cheddar or Tender White™ P(opc)orn.
God that sounds so bad, I will not remove this comment.
oprn… or just rn lol
@@DKF_oli i cant tell if youre joking or being fr right now
It was me... I ruined the 69th like.
I would try to write it like POpcoRN to skirt censors lol
PLEASEEE..
DO more videos like this. These are some of my favorite, same with the pillow one too
Scott’s “you’re welcome” hits me in the feels every time he corrects himself, I cannot help but feel relieved. He makes us feel like we are at fault for his misconceptions.
"Is this series overstaying its welcome?"
No. No, it's not. In fact it gets better every time. That intro gets funnier every time you do it.
I never know what I’m about to watch, but I live for it anyway. 😂 Scott, you’re a legend.
Technology Connections has a great video explaining why popcorn packaging often tells you not to use the microwave's popcorn button and how some microwaves sense poppedness - it's fascinating!
Immediately came to the comments looking for the Technology Connections reference!!
I also came here to see who else was gonna make a Technology Connections Popcorn Button comment! 😂
I just commented about that too, then was like, I bet hundreds of people have already commented that, but I haven’t seen as many people mention it as I thought I would.
Yeah, if you have a microwave with actual sensors, they do a great job popping bags of popcorn
Came here looking for people talking about Technology Connections. Check that video out people!
The way I actually got chills when Scott describes how cozy the act 2 popcorn was
Literally the most guy moment when he had to explain microwave vents for popcorn mode. True dad mode.
You are so good at explaining what you are experiencing. Like a really good story teller as well
This series will never get old for me. I love watching you expose different industries!
please scott don’t retire this series it brings so much joy🥺
Those leftover Black Jewell kernels look tasty. I love munching on the barley-popped kernels.
Okay but oddly comforting knowing I'm not the only one that rips open and licks the popcorn bag 😂
Scott, you’re one of the few people in the world that can keep me entertained while cooking microwave popcorn
Oh God, the clocks being off drives me nuts too. My wife thinks I'm weird cause I will sit there and try to get them perfect within a second or two lol
I just try to set mine ambidextrously. It's one of the only same things I can do with both hands 😏😆
Everytime a new Scott Cramer video drops my day is 100x better
Feel like this could be a food theory.
- does the popcorn button matter
- different “hacks” to make them pop all the kernels such as freezing the bag. Etc.
The first one actually was done.
Technology Connections has a good video on it. Basically the bags say don't use the popcorn button because sometimes the popcorn button just sets a preset time and sometimes the popcorn button uses actual sensors in the microwave, and they don't know what your microwave can do.
Food theory had a popcorn video recently. Check your wattage on the microwave!
some of the popcorn brands even recommend that you NOT use the popcorn button because it’ll always undercook the popcorn
@@frb5237came here to post this comment. Great video
Hello Cramer. I just wanted to add that adding all the popcorn logos in the bottom-left was a nice touch.
Also you couldn't order things online back then so it was, like this, just whatever brands they sold at our local stores lol I loved it bc there was popcorn at all times for days and I didn't have to do any of the work 😂
Edit: damn looks like pop secret is still on top lol noice
THANK YOU!
I love that scott has such random video ideas
11:21 “skinny pop? more like skinny flop.” was right there
This style of @scottcramer videos is my absolute favorite! Please just review all products, ever made!
I did not expect to learn about Skinny Pop today but here we are. There needs to be more discussion over the intentional misleading marketing. 😅
this series will never overstay its welcome, i could watch you compare literally anything lmao
*Hungrily Licks the bag* "If you all were dipped in oil and covered in butter, I think that you would be the biggest, fluffiest popcorn that there is." LOL! 🤣🤣🤣
These are some of my favorite type of Scott videos
"LEGALLY BINDING, MONTHS AGO, LONG BEFORE ANYONE MENTIONED HITLER'S GHOST BEING SUPER CHILL."
I gotcha, Scott.
What?
Scott, this is your best series, never stop it.
I’m also a half-popped popcorn fan! Maybe I should try the black jewel popcorn soon!
They do! Halfpops & ZeeZees make some. TJs used to have some that I loved that supposedly was made by Halfpops.
The reason all the bags are brown is because it’s cheaper to make. Any paper based product that isn’t brown had to go through an additional processing step to bleach it. Unbleached pulp is cheaper
you literally posted this at the perfect time i literally made and ate breakfast throughout the whole video and now i want popcorn
This series is amazing and definitely is not overstaying its welcome! I look forward to every entry of this series
I dunno why, but now I have de urge to pop myself some popcorn. Damn you Scott, you win again :(
I love that you did this video, i just recently discovered the craziness that is popcorn calories and how freaking confusing they are! Im glad to know im not alone!
technology connections has a good video on the existence of the popcorn button and the number unpopped kernels at the bottom of the bag i believe is dependent on the moisture within the kernels itself
Yeah, I grew popcorn and first you had to let it dry. Then if it wasn’t popping well, you needed to sprinkle some water in the storage container
That’s also what I would expect from that black popcorn. It’s probably from heritage breeds of popcorn so it’s not going to pop as well
So happy this series is back, i love these videos
As someone who loves but may be allergic to some microwave popcorn ingredients, this was strangely cathartic 🤣
no huffing it!
@@goldensloth7 But it's SO FLUFFY AND YELLOW AND BUTTERY 😭
The waxy film on the Jolly Time popcorn is unfortunately the hydrogenated oil they use. Super terrible for you. 😬
But like your wife, it used to be my favorite. And I also licked the bag. 😂😂😂
My method is to do 1 minute more than the box suggests and then listen for the popping to stop...ping. it works pretty well.
Back in the day, my dad used the popcorn button and filled the house with smoke. So we dont use that button anymore
The note for Austin at the end.... my heart. You're a good dude, Scott. Wishing the best for you Austin!!
I didn't start the vid yet but my family grows popcorn for seed
Yay I grew popcorn last year, hulless Japanese variety bit smaller popcorn once popped but delicious.
I got the seed from Annie's heirloom,
Are you part of Big popcorn then?!
@@akosszabo6835 very small still family owned... But yeah sure haha
You mean corn, then? Lol
Popcorn is the snack, lol
I genuinely really enjoy this series of exposing. Feel free to make more if you feel up to it. I'm sure myself and many others will keep watching.
Like I love video essays about politics and civil rights and social issues, but sometimes I just need a completely inconsequential video.
omg your ZOOM shirt at the end! I loved that show. Come on and ZOOM come on and ZOOM come on and ZOOM, ZOOM, ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM
He did a video about it a while ago!
I love these "Exposing Industry" videos and this one was amazing! But can we also talk about those Cramer Games shirts... 👀 I'm so hyped! I saw Greg wearing his and thought it could be a sign... then Scott had a new one at the end of the video.
