    WORKING WITH MERYL STREEP 1980
In 1980 I was the location unit manager on the Dorset England shoot of
THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMAN, the first starring role for MERYL STREEP.
I rented a house for her, her husband Don Gummer, their baby Henry and
their nanny. The contract stated NO PARTIES. Meryl asked everyone, I
mean everyone, hairy arsed Sparks, drivers, runners, the wives, kids,
etc., to call her MERYL. She came to me
in a break and she said " Barry, I want to throw a party in my house on
Friday night after the wrap for everyone", meaning the whole crew and
their partners. I balked .. ..I had signed the contract with a lawyer
expressly prohibiting it. "I'll get back to you". I went to my producer,
the gruff and lovely cigar smoking veteran LEON CLORE. "Of course she
can" he said, "so if they make a fuss so will we". Leon was street smart
    savvy.
The Friday night party was open house for everyone, wives,
girlfriends, boyfriends, electricians, Harold Pinter, Jeremy Irons and
his wife, Irish actress Sinéad Cusack, a big warm welcome house, with
our hostess Meryl washing up in the crowded kitchen, as we made a buffet
together and poured drinks and danced till late. No trouble came of it.
One more thing, "No photographs.". There are more stories. This one
still moves me. She was and is wonderful.

    Truly a spectacular film.
It may be my very favorite of each of the principal actors work.
Now almost 40 years later after it's initial release, and
I enjoy it every bit as much each and every time I watch
    it.
It may be the very first time that I can say a theatric presentation has out done the novel upon which it was based. Truly outstanding.

I'm presently reading the book for the fourth time ..... Superb! And the film certainly captures the essence of Fowles' vision.

I can imagine as an actor after 10 or more takes, it might be a relief to get a line reading from the Director. I understand that I just generally don’t like Line readings because they have their own process and they feel that day on the character or that they are the character. But I can just imagine the frustration of continually disappointing the Director. And not being given any direction on how to do a thing differently.

You have every right not to like it. But why do you think it's "dumb" as you call it? I've seen extremely dumb films but this one didn't strike me as one. You should read the book: it's great.
