- A beautifully restored mill house, hidden in the Dutch country of Pennsylvania, sits on a quiet creek. There are no massive stone wheels turning within, only vinyl records being broadcast on some of the highest quality stereo systems available today. OMA (which stands for Oswalds Mill Audio) specializes in creating the pinnacle of auditory experience using almost exclusively local materials transformed into breathtaking sound sculptures. Jonathan Weiss, OMA's founder, talked us through why bigger is sometimes better, when it comes to sound.

That two pair horn like speakers and others really marvelous. The reproduced
sound brings us the feeling back to the old military marching field. You guys
are just innovative, making things more wonderful, dynamic, beyond electronic,
technics, audio, etc. combination of know-how and art, as I call it.

I just saw an interview with the founder on CBS and I immediately said this guy must love music. As a music lover myself I felt an instant bond with him. Too bad I probably can't afford these speakers. Lol
This guy is a twat. Claims 'aerospace level stuff' but the soldering on their boards is fucking horrendous. If you're a music lover you won't bother with gimmick speakers like these. Go buy some Buchardt a400 or something.

There's a reason people don't make horns our of wood. They resonate, they create their own frequencies which are not part of the music, and when they vibrate they also dampen other frequencies. "Tone wood" is not a good thing in an audio system. The pretty looks are selling the equipment but it doesn't make sense. You don't have to MINE a turntable. Mass is what''s important. Making it out of metal is fine, the expense of getting it out of a quarry is completely unnecessary.
@@davidmdyer838Thanks David, not all things have to make sense, for some aesthetics and exclusivity is enough. There are no horns in any of my three systems. But sometimes variety is the spice of life and a little colouration or distortion is required or not. I too prefer to listen to the music - not the system.

Well. Does it beat a live concert where you actually hear the instruments around you? How can it get better than that in terms of audio quality?
Nothing will beat the real thing, but it can try and get relatively close. Remember, the majority of live shows use amplified systems to reproduce sound. All we cand do is try and recreate what that said speaker system is. Usually the issue lies with the recording/capturing of the venue etc'.

While I appreciate the intent and lofty goals, even if cost were not an issue, where would one place equipment of this size? It automatically precludes most people living in cities (even a millionaire in a luxury penthouse may not have the space to accommodate this). It seems more suitable for medium sized cities where homes are humongous and often have media rooms.
You can hear more with a good set of headphones. Perfection he says..show me an adult with perfect hearing. By the time we are the salesmans age our top end will be at 17K if we are lucky..
Is there any place in Europe, preferably in Germany, where it is possible to listen to such a system? Buying one is far out of reach for me, but I would loce to know how it sounds.

Go to Google Patents and type in Folded Horn Acoustic Guitar. This is USPTO Patent #10,777,172, and has two five foot long (exponential) folded horns inside an acoustic guitar. This provides more low end, and much greater volume, but the natural frequency range on the soundboard remains. The sound is captured by a microphone, amp, and two speakers inside the guitar. Compression chambers tuned to 89 Hz feed the horns. Similar to having two small Klipsch or other speaker horns inside the guitar, battery powered. Enclosed speakers and divided guitar chamber prevents feedback. A pickup can be blended with this also. This new patent is in the prototype build stage. All tonewood, no plastic or carbon fiber.

don't kid your self the really good pro studios use more expensive speakers systems yet, look up the cost of the top models from ATC Pro, PMC Pro, JBL Pro for a start.

What you need to hear for mixing is different from what you need to hear for enjoyment. Most audio engineers already have their ears blown out but they know what to listen for.

I have 7 inch woofers in a 7 inch wide, 36 high 11 inch deep wood cabinet ==they sound rather good to me.

It's bs that they tell us we have not heard really good sound system them they build one and show it off and the shit cost more than anyone could ever afford 😖
They are not trying to sell to people that can't afford them. They already know before they even started to mfg. audio equipment that it is LIMITED production and it's only catering to those that can afford them. Why are you lashing out on a company that makes a product that's priced for a small group of people? They are obviously more than you can afford. So move along.
They use some fo the most expensive components. Their drivers for the mid range and lower midrange horns are in the $17K to $20K for a pair of just the drivers. That's THEIR cost. And of course there is mark up. They have speakers that they are only going to make a specific number of pairs and that's it.
Here's the issue, based on my rough calculations, just to mfg. one pair of speakers, it would not surprise me that the component costs, plus labor is around $70K to $100K to make one pair of these $285K speakers. In the realm of audio speakers. That's only about a 3 to 4x markup. Do you know how much it costs to make a pair of $6000 Klipschhorns? About $500 in components, plus labor. In order for a company to stay in business,, they have to have markup. It's how they pay the bills. Now, to pay engineers money to design them, it takes several years, many prototypes that aren't sellable, and it can cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars and several years to make the first sellable pair. Yes, they are expensive, but they are what they are.
Do you know how much it costs for a typical Asian company to make a pair of speaker that sell for $100 MSRP? About $10 to $15, with labor.
Here's some pricing on the other products they sell, but these are based on 2010 pricing.
OMA’s Tourmaline turntable ($13,000 for two-arm version), Thomas Schick’s 12” tonearm ($1475), Atemis Labs’ Schroder TA-1L 12” tonearm ($3500), Soundsmith’s The Voice Ebony phono cartridge ($2200), and Miyajima’s Premium Mono BE phono cartridge ($1180). Amplification: OMA’s Phonostage ($9200) and Silvercore AG 100 step-up transformer ($1200), and OMA’s 2.5Wpc Parallax PL 519 SET amplifier ($11,000). Speaker cables and interconnects were Analysis Plus Oval Nine ($645/10ft pair) and Analysis Plus Solo Crystal Oval ($550). The equipment is supported by OMA’s gorgeous Slate Rack ($5400; shown here with four shelves-all OMA racks are custom), and the Tourmaline turntable was equipped with OMA’s SP10 graphite platter mat ($325).
It's expensive, but certainly not as much as other brands like Audio Note.

Ive listened to amazing HIFI systems in the order of 35k+. My old mans is one of these and trust me it is like a religious experience. When you approach musical perfection, you actually start getting goose bumps. Its simply amazing and unfortunately most of you will never experience it in your life. Some people dump 30k into cars others into HIFI systems. It's just a hobby that is not to everyone's taste. Plus if you are musically deaf, it is indeed a waste of money on you.
The first time I heard B&W 800 Diamond speakers with McIntosh Amps, I walked out of the store feeling like I was floating. My whole body was transformed. My muscles felt differently. That's what people mean by religious (it grips you at the very core of all your senses and helps you transcend your mundane worries and existential obsessions). Great artistic experiences can do that for many people. In our over digitized world and with information overload, most people have to escape to nature (skiing, kayaking, mountain biking) to get an adrenaline rush to have a similar experience. Some people resort to psychedelic drugs. But if you can experience that in your own home through high quality music, it's a truly sublime transformative experience.
I really have to bet to differ here. Good sound or music is only as good or as realistic as the source. You cannot sit there and tell me that some audio equipment (no matter how much it cost) will never sound as good as the real thing. I've had the opportunity to hear the Houston Symphony at both the Allen Theatre and at a high school of which had very well engineered acoustics. Being in the larger room (the Allen theatre) the symphony sounded great, however in the high school auditorium they sounded the best I've ever heard any music reproduced. I was blown away at how amazing and just how loud or quiet the symphony could be. No equipment in the world can make sound like the real thing.
Oh and BTW, if you are going to charge these extremely outrageous prices, please get folks who take more pride in their work. That soldering and wiring work leaves much to be desired.
A cone is not a good shape for propagation of (musical) sound waves, and for bass and sub bass the driver should be loaded in a pipe that is of the correct diameter and acoustically damped at the appropriate locations --- those huge length cathedral organ pipes don't require damping because they play only one frequency
Anyone knows of any measurements done on these , make no mistake they look wonderful but sound dreadful . You cant just put horns all over the place willy nilly, mix them with woofers that are not horns , you hear that difference it wont blend , like oil and water , cant mix it . And if you dont put all the drivers in one place you lose time alignment, you lose stereo image , there is no way to prevent that other that going further from the speaker so that the angles of coming sound are made smaller .
Some of these designs are such to be listened from 50m away in order to sound good , and then off with the efficiency , even if you have that space and you might have .
Its just wrong , and measurement's will show that , will show everything .Taht is why i would like to see those

I use Dollar Tree Headphones and I still can't tell the difference.
These products are not about accurate reproduction. They have more to do with creating conversations at dinner parties and stuff.

They are using sound principals of audio equipment design that stems back from the 1930's from companies like RCA when they made extremely efficient speaker and amp designs that don't require huge amounts of power to produce a high quality sound for a large room. It's not snake oil at all. They are just doing some modern approach to a tried and true method of sound reproduction. Their drivers are amongst the best produced. It's just that the average person doesn't have a big enough room for these types of systems due to the large horns they are using. That's why these types of systems aren't common place in most homes. They project the sound a long distance. But horn based speakers have been around for a long time and are still used. They are just using a conical shaped horn which are larger than the average room can handle. But wealthy people that might be these have big homes with large rooms to filll. In some ways, it's a lot easier using these than other large speaker systems that require HUGE power amps that cost a fortune, even more expensive and ultra heavy. They aren't for everyone, but it's definitely not snake oil. You just don't understand what they are doing, that's all.

This is extremely expensive snake oil, and horns are not the best and listen to music, but they have a fun character, but tiring to listen to. Otherwise, I have mostly been most impressed by System Audio, and they have been producing speakers for over 30 years with a bunch of audio entustiasts, so they know what it's all about.

Big sound. But not musically engaging. The sound is all attack, but lacks sustain. Put a vocal on like the Tallis scholars and it will sound terrible. Sounds like its strength is with large scale brass band music. If you want to spend ridiculous money on high end, I would recommend Kondo Japan. Just my thaughts.
There's a certain level of contrived snoberry that resonates from the vocal horns of greedy marketing clowns, and it's really hard to hide their emotionally detached sales pomp, and an obvious lack of belief in their own products. This is shitty music, Stravinsky? Open up your ears, maybe ease into or something, this is great stuff, and you really have to hear this part in context. It's part of a story, there's a narration, it's a soldier's tale, by himself, walking, so the music is semi-military, he's trudging, it's semi-folk music. If you don't know what's happening you probably won't get it. It's for a very small and unusual group of instruments so you really do hear detail.
