    I'm now one of Oldfield's biggest fans on planet earth. Funny thing is the two albums that got me hooked over 30 years ago was indeed Platinum and Tubular Bells. My mam owned them (and still has them) on vinyl. Great video mate!

      Thanks. This was a passion piece for me. Very self-indulgent but too good an opportunity to miss!

    12:07 the 2003 version is interesting but lacks the life of the original . But I do like the extended version of the ending of side 1 with drums.

    Took six of them on the desk to master it!

      Interesting. I was referencing a video interview with Tom Newman and another of his quotes from 'The making of Tubular Bells' where he said up to five people were on the desk at any one time but who knows, may have been more. Still can't understand how they managed it though. I've assisted mixes in analogue 24 track studios and that's bad enough when each track only has one instrument and you're only mixing 5 minute songs. Just incredible.

    On the fly mixing with crib sheets would certainly be used but there was another technique; I sat in on a mix down at Boilerhouse Studios 24 track in Lytham. There were 3 big changes. 2 going into & out of the middle 8 and the final chord. They mixed just past each point, reset the mixer, restarted just before the edit, then spliced the 1/4” master afterwards.

    • @MoonhareStudio
      @MoonhareStudio  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, you are absolutely right that's one way to do it for sure. I was lucky on the 24 track album sessions I did that it tended to be very straightforward band stuff so once the mix was up, with just a few sections riding a fader or two it was straight to 1/4" in one go. Sub groups on the desk helped a lot too.

    At last the UA-cam algorithm has pulled a blinder!!!! (I knew it would come good, if I just kept clicking enough useless thumbnails of cats).
    Amazing how the stems provide even more insight to numerous lovely little melodies, that get missed or hidden, when listening to the piece as a whole. Every time I see TB analysed, I gain a fresh appreciation into the complexity, like picking apart a fabric to see the weave of colours and threads. Yet afterwards, I am always amazed at how it still manages to effortlessly flow together.
    Hats off to the great work you have done on this vid - labour of love indeed.

      Haha. Yes the cat videos do seem to be pretty popular! But thanks for this comment. I agree with you. I did wonder if I would spoil it for myself by listening to the stems but like you I just appreciate it even more. It will always be a part of my musical life for sure. Darren

      Hey thanks for the Christmas coffee! Really appreciated. I don't know if you have The Making of Tubular Bells, Richard Newman. I got it after making this video and there were even more insights in there. The original hardback edition is still to be found andis fabulous. Not a huge book but contains a replica of the original promo leaflet for the Manor. Check it out and thanks again for the encouragement.

      They were originally released by Oldfield for a mixing competition. It's only the first 15 minutes but really fascinating. I have been passed some Peter Gabriel multis too but haven't had a chance to load them up yet.

  • @leethomas2155

    The biggest secret is... how the hell did you get all the separate unmixed elements of the album in order to demonstrate the multi tracking.

    • @MoonhareStudio
      @MoonhareStudio  2 роки тому +1

      They were released for a mixing competition years ago and I stumbled on a link but if you look in the description I have put a link so you can download then and have a play yourself.
