This monitor was way ahead of its time (at least compared to those an average consumer could afford). I'm still watching this video on a full HD (1920x1080) display, that is not really much higher resolution than this, and a digital interface, way before DVI/HDMI and DisplayPort.
Oh! 320s and 540s, plus a dozen monitors? How awesome is that, please!? Do you happen to have the recovery CD media for those? I'd love to get hold of at least an ISO image file of those ...
There is actually an even more rare SGI flat panel, where you could clip off the backside of the monitor and place it on an overhead projector. I used to have one of these for demo purposes. Will see if i can dig up a picture of it somewhere. I believe it also starred in Twister and led people to believe SGI was coming out with a notebook. It was however just the monitor that was produced and a notebook was never planned.
Yes, though thatvwas kot this Display here, but the so-called SGI Presenter. It was a totally different device predating the 1600SW display by a few years.
Well, given the age it's questionable if this monitor would keep up with our present day technology. Originally however, SGI provided a ColorLock sensor (which I don't have) along with this monitor, to perform a proper color calibration. After all, this was meant for professional use in graphics and video processing business. See also www.sgistuff.net/hardware/systems/documents/007-3939-001-colorlock.pdf
I was lucky enough to rescue my SGI O2 from my place of work, they were going to scrap it. So I got it and a Samsung Syncmaster lcd before they were forever lost! I did do some upgrades on it, I replaced the 180Mghz CPU with a 400Mghz version, upgraded the ram from 64 Megs and get a hard drive fully loaded with a bunch of stuff. I made sure to clone the drive. All said, I have about $500 into it.
cool monitor, unfortunately I didn't buy it with my SGI 320 a few years ago, it was only supposed to cost €15 :-D I wasn't aware that it was so rare, I didn't find the size big enough :D
@@THEPHINTAGECOLLECTOR oh yes.. dont know why i hadn't buy it :D but my SGI 320 also only cost 35€ :D at that time this hardware was just old stuff...
Image quality and Weight vs. Space Saving and Elegant. Hard choice ;-) I wasn't into graphical applications, but I'm tempted to believe people would have in fact stuck with the CRTs for a while still.

That's true. As a matter of fact, the Weather STAR XL from The Weather Channel is essentially an O2 but modified to report local weather information.
Iconic display! always snapped up quickly, always wanted one for my O2 but never found one at a reasonable price.
Yeah, It was also surprised to find one at affordable conditions. I got the O2, and only a few days later, the display popped up on eBay.
I’ve got probably a dozen SW1600s for use on my O2s and 320/540 series machines. They’re a superb monitor, especially for the time it was produced.

The design still looks cool. It would be interesting to see how it compares to modern IPS monitors, especially in regards to color reproduction.

Sounfs like a pretty decent machine. Take care for it!
Great video. You have my dream job!
Thanks. It‘s only a hobby after all.
What holds you up doing it yourself?

Oh my, 15€ only!? You should have definitely taken it!

@@renep702 awwwww! And nowadays they sell for hundreds…
I'd probably have the Trinitron display since it's still a better display than the LCD they offered at the time.

Great machine! Aby idea to make Q2 playable?
It is, though there won‘t be huge wonders on the performance, so much I can say. There‘s going to be a follow-up video to cover that topic.
Uuuuuuuuh man I had one of those. And also an SGI machine running Windows NT 4.0.
Sweet
These 👏 are 👏 not 👏 rare👏
