While Jim was making headlines for his stand-up act in Canada, he had a hard time being noticed in the U.S. He auditioned for SNL in 1980 but didn't get cast. Trying to do stand-up on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show was the big thing to do for comedians at the time and Carrey at first had a hard time getting booked. When he finally got booked and performed, his career didn't skyrocket into the stratosphere immediately like he had hoped. He did a TV show that got cancelled after only 13 episodes and some of the movies that he got cast in were only made for T.V. and not released theatrically.
