p.p.s. sorry for suggesting we lie down in the forest and die when we got lost, in retrospect I think my logic might have been flawed.
I used to drive out that way park on country roads and walk for between 2 and three hours, the view over Dublin was one place I ended up at. No maps or routes, I got lost on steep gorse and hit some boggy land too, drank from a stream and it took 7 hours.
After that I joined a hiking club. I used to like being lost but that was not fun.
Now living in Roscommon and I need to join a new club to get motivated.

There are so many ways and trails that crisscross the Dublin Mountains, I can imagine you could fill many weekends just wandering!
I think there’s a quite active club in Sligo (I’ve not yet heard of a Roscommon walking club), so depending on which end of Roscommon you’re in, the Sligo branch might work for you!
And yes it’s lovely to get out on the colder days too ☺️
