6:47 Nathan almost breaks character. I don't think I've ever seen a sincere interview with him. Seems like he'll keep up the Andy Kaufman public persona indefinitely.
He will give sincere interviews, he just doesn’t do it in mass media or situations where the audience is likely hoping for him to be in character. If you want candid Nathan, checkout when Christopher Nolan interviewed him and Benny Safdie, or the recent Hollywood Reporter interview with him and Emma Stone. There’s also a few podcasts appearances over the years he’s had where he’s not in character.
There’s no doubt he almost never breaks character, but what I’ve learned from The Rehearsal and some of his more candid interviews is that “real Nathan” is less removed from “Nathan for You” Nathan than I’d initially thought. Dude is an absolute genius and totally hilarious, and he is playing a character, but he’s also one of the driest, more awkward and self-conscious people around
@@Matt-km1ekin a sense, one could say he’s playing a character in the same way that most celebrities on these talk shows are playing a character, by playing up certain parts of their personality. Except, in some ways he’s doing it in the opposite direction.
In a sense, aren’t we all just characters? More seriously, I think the ‘character’ is him exaggerating natural parts of his personality, like his awkwardness. It’s my impression that he is naturally awkward and can accidentally make people uncomfortable. Of course, in real life, he probably tries to minimise the amount that he makes people uncomfortable, and has probably learned how to tell if he is making people uncomfortable, at least some of the time. Which is, in a sense, also him performing a character, in that he’s regulating his behaviour and performing, specifically to make people more comfortable. Whereas when he’s ‘in character’ he’s playing up a version of himself who’s more awkward, who hasn’t learned how to compensate for his natural awkwardness.
Mount Everest is 900,000 feet ... but actually 29,000. Is that the secret to comedy, to absurdly exaggerate well known facts? Sometimes I feel like when I don't laugh at Dave's jokes it's my deficiency. But not usually.
letterman was expanding on nathan's 1,000,000 joke. it is common knowledge that Everest is the tallest mountain, so to say it is 900,000 was letterman's way of calling nathan out as incorrect while playing into the joke a little.
David Letterman didn't know he was sitting next to a genius
This one of the rare occasions in any comment section where that term is appropriate.
Nathan Fielder is one of the best original entertainers in the industry. Protect this Canadian at all costs.
Our host grew up near Vancouver. Don’t worry about protecting that Canadian.
Protect him from what?
I hope more people will understand the absolute genius and commitment of Nathan Fielder and appreciate the creativity of his comedy in time.
Dave ending the interview by saying, “You’re a lovely woman” = 👨🏻🍳😘
Genius.
the million has me weak
It’s so funny watching folks sit down, so excited to tell Dave how stoked they are to be there, then watch Dave steamroll over the sentiment.
The Wizard of Loneliness, in the flesh.
Nathan Fielder is a genius and that’s that.

He seems pretty sincere in the Q&A about The Curse when Christopher Nolan is interviewing him.

I CAN'T EVEN TELL IF NATHAN IS A CHARACTER OR A REAL PERSON I AM FREAKING OUT. LOL!
You wrote that in all caps and combined two sentences without a period, therefore it's funny.
@@whothennow24 You take everything at face value, and are therefore adorable. I mean critical 👏👏🏼

The price-match TV sale was great, too
Nathan Fieler is crazy, I love him
one-in-a-lifetime entertainer
Well, that was very funny. I'll only say this. Way to go, Dave!
If John Cryer and Alan Rickman had a baby raised in a Skinner box.
4:20 Rare genuine break from Nathan. You can see him recollect himself. This must have been such a joy for him.
So it turns out Nathan actually does have a true story that involves a cop.
Everest is like 30,000 feet Dave
Thought he was going to say "Well, I think they deport females a lot less often than males" at the end.
One of the loosest guys I know
Great story /. Airport…
Letterman missed the mark on this one.. should have researched the guest first
Thunder Bay is not such a beautiful place. Sorry, Paul.
I'm from Thunder Bay myself. Maybe how beautiful it is just depends on the time of year. I find it to be alright.🙂
Sleeping Giant is right next door and is one of the prettiest places in Ontario.
🙏👍👌👌🤩😍😍😍😍💕💕💝💝💞💞
Paul Schaffer is way better at talking then playing music....he should have been a sidekick like Andy Richter.
He's very funny in his own right.
Taken too young.
Bro had me worried
😂
Obviously he meant a million inches
:)
What a poor interviewer lmao. "What state was it in, what was the elevation" like brother who cares
I’ll be the 40th comment. Funny!

yeah it was an odd joke I think
