Hi buddy can you tell me is there a benefit of using i2s to ps audio and are you happy with Rivo +. I'm looking for a streamer to match my ps audio directstream jr.
@@krzysiekczubinski664Hi, I want to connect it to my Cyan2, but perhaps the PS AirLens is a better choice. Laiv is also working on a streaming Ethernet bridge, I heard from the company.
Any chance you can review/compare the Rivo+ with Magna HiFi's Mano MKIII.5 with it's separate Farad LPS? Similar price points (depending on now you spec the Mano). Both are dedicated streamers with no dac. And for those of us (myself included) who have plans for an upgrade of this component, it would be a very interesting shootout of two units that are very similarly situated in the market to help make a decision. Really enjoy your reviews which are super helpful in learning about new gear.
Thanks for another wonderful, in-depth, detailed evaluation. What dacs will max-out the performance of Rivo plus? Will I2S connection make a positive difference for a cheaper dac, that has this input option? Also, how does R+ streaming compare to classic, cd or local digital library playback?
It's amazing that a streamer or a power supply for one can make much of a difference. I wonder where that gets introduced. Do the DACs struggle to keep time with the clock? Does the noise from the PSU travel along the connections to the DAC? Audio is such a deep hole and its fascinating to hear where and how subtle tweaks make a difference.
I always liked your reviews, since you are very good at describing how things actually sound. But I do have a question: When you say that a streamer transport, which is very very far back in the chain and also completely digital, in other words does not even have an analog output, actually sounds, how do you compare the sound with other streamers? Since there are so many things in the chain that could affect the sound more than the streamer. I would myself struggle to be sure about how a streamer transport sounds. Thank you for you great work!
If you lock the rest of the system with components you're familiar with and change digital streamers only - the sound will change too. Some sound brighter, some warmer, some more revealing etc. So I compare them and share my impressions.
I can confirm by changing to the Rivo + and Lineo5, it was a substantial upgrade from my Eversolo DMPA6 with LHY LPS used as a transport only. Same DAC, same preamp. A very significant upgrade indeed. Much more detail and overall, and better imaging. I cannot go back to the Eversolo now that I have heard the Rivo+.
😅thanks for your reviews, I am also interested in Rpi based streamers, after having a Lumin mini U1 a couple of years, software is a big part of a good product, maybi you can shine a light on the Ian Canada hats.

My Shanti has been somewhat modified so it's not in it's factory state anymore. But Lineo5 still has advantage in how full and bold it sounds. Shanti is nice but leaner.
I haven't. I helped friend do it and it was a pain to work on them. For myself I pulled out IEC, fuse, and voltage selector... And replaced all of that with Furutech Fi30 R NCF connected directly.
Looks the ticket!. Here my streaming device is the LINN Klimax DS. I prefer a one box solution. Been streaming for twenty years now, started with Squeezebox devices and eventually got the best solution fir me. I use a Roon Rock server with Qobuz which uses my own Nas music library.
I suppose to get the full benefit in the digital path you should also power your router/modem with a linear PSU. A lot of power amplifiers, even if linear designs are moving to switched mode PSUs now. A linear PSU option for these would be interesting but not holding my breath.
Thanks Srbo! This Rivo+ looks like a very powerful piece of equipment. It also seams that the Volumio OS and app have evolved significantly from my RPi days, when it was glitchy and very unstable. Sound was good, but the app was lousy. Obviously not the case anymore. Also, I actually like the simplicity of this Rivo+ compared to the Motivo, with it's meaningless screen (at least in my opinion).
I'd like to ask you a question. I don't stream from the Web but entirely from mainly FLAC files on hard disc on a laptop. From there, the bit signal goes along a Supra USB cable into a Singxer SU-2 DDC, and then along a quality HDMI cable to into the I2S input of my Gustard R26 DAC (with an external 10MHZ OCXO clock). The question is this: the signal is entirely digital. As far as I can see, I've done everything I can to ensure it's as pristine as possible. Are you saying that the Volumio Rivo would be likely to generate better sound? And if so, how and why?
Hi, does Volumio support multiple genre random playlists like LMS/piCorePlayer? In other words can I select one or several genres from my music library to be played randomly? For me that would be a deal maker/breaker. Thanks
No, Volumio doesn’t even do shuffle or randomized playing, you can download a plug in, but it’s very basic, and chooses from your entire library. It’s a very slow UI if you have a big library, at least on RPi 4.
Maybe make some good DAC's with matching cases. Maybe a amp too or sell a matching case for amp kits such as Nilai 500 kit... These cases have good style, stack would look cool.
Nice to hear good things on the Rivo+ - I've had good luck with the Rivo. Considering the Lineo5, and wondered how it might compare to the 5v iFi iPower Elite. Cost is similar. Size of the Lineo5 is surprisingly large so iFi looks best if space is a concern. Sound is ultimately most important. Any feedback on these two power sources with Rivo or Rivo+ would be great. Happy Holidays!
Every power supply will be better then the standard one, the Lineo5 seems a chinese low budget linear power supply with adapted branding (without many specs). In this case (all digital device) I would go for the cleaner and faster Elite. Don't forget the few % marketing purpose of this review in collaboration with Volumio 😊
I have iPower Elite but it's 12V version so can't compare them directly. It works fantastic for my router and other 12V devices I've tried it with. Fast, clean and punchy. I might try 5V at some point. My guess is that it would sound faster but with less mass. Just a guess though.
Very nice review, at the same high standard as usual. Just one question: which output did you use for your listening tests, or do they all sound the same (USB, I2S, etc)?
I prefer I2S but the USB one is great too. Which one is better will depend as much on your DAC (and it's internal clock used for USB connection) as on the streamer. That's why it's difficult to test objectively. No way to make a general conclusion for all DACs.
How do you think it compares to a roon nuc running rock and mounted in a fanless case with a good LPS? I use this as a streamer and another nuc as the roon core..
Thank you for the review. I would go with the Halo Red over Volumio. Have the Halo DAC very well made and expect the same for the Red. Reviews of the Volumio mention buggy sofware, not an issue if using Roon. I expect the Halo Red would just work, so Red with a good power cable, done. But my Innous Zen is hard to beat, very good software that is always being improved and updated, CD ripper, internal hard disk, wonderful streamer, 5 years + hasn't missed a beat.
Zen Stream sounds very deteiled but kind of lean and not very thredimensional. It will depend on the quality of the rest of the system but Rivo+ outperforms it quite noticeably with bigger, bolder, and more spacious sound.

I don't recall mention of what connections you used ? The Rivo (which I had and hated) was poorly designed for the Spdif coax output (just a buffered output from small board computer they use). It was solely designed for USB to DAC use (IMHO). How does this change from the original ? Any good amount of engineering could have filtered the 5v DC input inside this box to very low levels of noise. The PS noise really only effects the clocks and Jitter on the outputs. They also could have designed a very low noise switching PS that would cost $75-100. Yep, USB on the Rivo, and you need a DAC that can pair well and handle the higher resolutions. Add Roon, and the proper DAC, and the Rivo is going to be hard to beat.
Nice review but like Hans also stated a high quality switching power supply is often better suited for pure digital sources because it´s faster and more silent and a linear power supply is better for dacs..
i ate a $500 loss shipping my Rivo back to Volumio because the management software was incredibly bad in every way--unstable, poor network performance, sluggish interface. you didn't notice any of these in your last video recommending it; do you notice them now?
I didn't notice any problems on Rivo but I did on Motivo and I criticised it in the review. It took ~3 months of updates to fix most of these. Now with Rivo+ I am getting stable and reliable performance out of the box. It maybe had one or two slow ups in several weeks I've been using it.
I thought the original Rivo was a little bright and tonally slightly off. It strayed from being natural in the end. So I returned it. Is the Rivo + similar in tonality to the original Rivo, if so I wouldn't buy it.
I have the Rivo Black with the Farad Super3 LPS... I also added a Pangea split USB cable, an ifi iPurifier3, the ifi iSilencer, a capacitor bank in between the Farad and the Rivo, with a StackAudio SmoothLan on the ethernet cable from the LHY SW8 network switch. This streamer is so revealing, I have the Mercury here, a Cabasse Abyss, a WiiM Ultra and Pro. The Rivo, with this mess of attachments, leaves all of these streamers in the dust. Then add the Roon Nucleus One to the chain, and the ToneWinner AD-1PRE+ that easily streams 32bit at 768kHZ. Audio Nirvana. Yes, the Rivo ROCKS!
It's at the same time the best Volumio streamer and the best one I ever had in my system and reviewed. Both are true but the second one sounds better... This is YT after all and I do like having more views when I put some time and effort into making content.
I don’t think you have the right to say what his title has to be. Especially not if it’s the best streamer he listened to. There is nothing incorrect in it!
@@Cirillion if he compared it to e.g. Silent Angel Bonn N8 Pro, PS Audio AirLens, Silent Angel Munich M1T, or Magna Hifi Mano Ultra MK3.5, that would be a statement. But if you never had a streamer in this price class, and only tried cheaper ones, the title is overhyped. And save me the "right" entitlement. I have the right to my opinion, as do you. His title misleads a bit, as one expects a comparison on same level or higher. Hence, the suggestion for a more accurate title.

The initial setup was a little bit buggy for me, using beta iOS. From a web browser I had no issues and now the mobile app works great.
No Sirius XM or sub output 😮
♥
I thought the original Rivo was a little bright and tonally slightly off. It strayed from being natural in the end. So I returned it. Is the Rivo + similar in tonality to the original Rivo, if so I wouldn't buy it.
You should start by telling your viewers the price first; how many people can afford it?
Another incorrect title to hype. Write “best Volumio streamer”!
