Lot of windows OEMs guilty of this too. The new XPS lineup, all have soldered RAM. The new ASUS Zephyrus laptops, also all soldered RAM. Even a lot of thinkpads too, like the P series 14” workstations, the X series, soldered RAM. It sucks. I wish Apple would design for repairability / upgradability, or barring that, at least cut the ram and storage upgrade prices to something slightly more reasonable like $50 to get to 16/512 ram storage. But Apple is not the only culprit, people need to rage just as hard if not more against the windows laptop OEMs who try to pull this shit on us

I will say in defense of Apple/the design, 60 vs 120hz on a laptop is not nearly as noticeable as on a phone or tablet. I have 120hz on a Pro and a 144hz monitor, but for daily activities it’s not really a big deal. Now my phone and iPad with its animations and gestures are different - 120hz is definitely a noticeable improvement vs 60hz there.
Well, it’s very noticeable to me, especially when performing scrolling or minimizing a window. 120Hz made it feel much more smooth. I was using the Surface Laptop 7 that’s equippied with a 120Hz display along side my Macbook Air.

M2 Airs have a serious problem: the smaller SSDs are half the speed of other SSDs. This matters because they are used for swap a lot. Not so for M1 or M3 Airs.
In Canada the only one that's affordable is the m1 and that's only because of recent discount because of the m3 release. So in Canada a M1 costs $999, M2 $1299, M3 $1399. So it's a lot less affordable here
8gb/256gb shouldn't even be available in 2024 on anything but the absolute lowest end POS laptop. It's not even a real config, it mostly exists so they can claim "starting at 1099!" in marketing. In reality the thing is 1499 because almost everyone is going to spend 400 bucks to get the 16/512gb config.

Sure, just don't get the m2 with the base storage because they nerfed the SSD speed on that one. They fixed that on the m3 version, so if you aren't going to use the storage anyways it waaaay better of a value to get the newer chip, plus 2x the SSD speed for only 100 more dollars. But if you are doing other upgrades, it's probably worth the $100 for the better chip anyways. If you are getting an all around base m2 you are probably better off with the $700 M1 air Walmart special. Slightly slower chip, 2x the SSD speed and $300 less 👌
Unpopular opinion ,this midnight colour looks like those cheap truck style Dell laptops and old Lenovos. Grey and silver models still look better, even the girly starlight model.

M3 MacBook Air is wonderful. Life is too short to deny ourselves the use of great tools. 16gig memory at least, and 512gig SSD minimum. Apple lets you pay for it over a year interest free, AND if you use Apple card you get 3% back. Caution: The Airs lack fans, which is why they are so thin and light. If you are doing anything seriously processor intense such as 4k video editing, well, test it out thoroughly during the 2 week period. The Air might heat up and then slow down.
Given M series processors are systems on a chip (RAM is not just soldered to the motherboard but rather integrated into a processor and has even more limited space), the price can be justified.
It’s crazy what they charge for memory and a little bit of hard disk space. Did you know the M2 has only one nano chip and the M3 has two nano chips? It makes a difference.
I have an OG m1 and trust me, if you are getting a mac in the first place you arent bothered by upgrades costing extra. Extra budgeting for anything in life is just a basic good idea
People buying the base model definitely are interested in spending the lowest amount possible. Just cause someone doesn't have enough money for a top of the line spec doesn't mean they don't want a laptop with actually usable battery and decent performance, so their only realistic option is getting an M series MacBook.

AMD already has a more efficient chip, but x86 is killing the efficiency. Just cause Intel is also going to use tsmc's 7nm doesn't mean they'll pull off some magic. Qualcomm still has to prove they can actually make a good chip, because their old Snapdragon attempts were a disaster (that I was pissed off about). Microsoft also screwed themselves up by doing a 10 year exclusivity deal on arm, so we can only wait and see. I'm a windows user, but I'm also a realist knowing what people need and want, well, what people are requesting from their machines.

Misleading. The very high ram and storage upgrade prices are similar with all other models. So why single out this model?

On my loq 15, to go from 8bto 16 gigs of ram is $16 for a second 8 gig stick, or $100 to get 2 16 gig sticks of ram
Also no disc drive and no built in ports like the 2012 ultimate macbook pro
I have an OG m1 and trust me, if you are getting a mac in the first place you arent bothered by upgrades costing extra. Extra budgeting for anything in life is just a basic good idea
People buying the base model definitely are interested in spending the lowest amount possible. Just cause someone doesn't have enough money for a top of the line spec doesn't mean they don't want a laptop with actually usable battery and decent performance, so their only realistic option is getting an M series MacBook.
@@igor4knezevic Intel Core Ultra and the coming Snapdragon X Elite will bring comparable battery life and performance, so by that point (mid 2024) Apple will feel some pressure. The coming of Snapdragon X Elite is why Apple refreshed the MacBook Air line so hastily. I predict by next year Apple will start with 12 or 16GB due to competition
@@jaralara6429 those are all predictions (that I can only wish about), but if someone wants a laptop now, they don't have a lot of choice if they want a long lasting laptop that doesn't constantly run at 40-50°C. AMD already has a more efficient chip, but x86 is killing the efficiency. Just cause Intel is also going to use tsmc's 7nm doesn't mean they'll pull off some magic. Qualcomm still has to prove they can actually make a good chip, because their old Snapdragon attempts were a disaster (that I was pissed off about). Microsoft also screwed themselves up by doing a 10 year exclusivity deal on arm, so we can only wait and see. I'm a windows user, but I'm also a realist knowing what people need and want, well, what people are requesting from their machines.

There are a lot of differences between the two for one ssd speeds considering it’s only 100 dollars more it’s a much better value unless you find the m2 for alot cheaper

Yeah, we all know that Apple is a ripoff. I have the 2022 M2 with 8GB & 256GB. I just bought an additional 256GB storage stick for $25. How in the world can Apple justify charging an extra $200 for that extra storage???

At least the base model's SSD is about 3000mb/s read speeds which is double the M2 MacBook Air.
I got the midnight one the 2022 and trust me the fingerprints are the worse there wasn't other colours so I had to get it it was an emergency laptop for my school.
