QUESTION I am using enamel paint since acrylics seem not to stick to the plastic of my model kits. Using enamel paints for the silver base coating and later for the camouflage, how would the hairspray method be done in this case?
This works just fine using all enamels.Apply your enamel base coat, let it dry. Apply hairspray, and then a top coat of enamel. Works just the same. (On a side note, if your acrylics aren't sticking, have you tried a base primer coat first? That might help)
Dave...Can you spray two or three layers of paint over the hairspray and get the same result ? Meaning can this be done if the vehicle has a camouflage paint job or do I have to paint layer then add hairspary, chip it, seal it, then add another layer of paint etc etc
I've not done camo over the top, but I can't see why not. Try to keep your layers thin if at all possible, I have found the thicker the paint on top of the hairspray the more it tends to come off in big chunks when wet. Let me know how you go! Cheers, Dave
Excellent Dave!!. Have u seen the new Humbrol EnamelWash??, weathering an powder paints for rust moss sand snow everything. The effects are simply BRILLIANT!!! I would like to see u use them. As my results were FANTASTIC!! An your way better than me, but I think I could match you, as best I could. Gotta hav that strayan pride!! Hay.. But seriously would like to see what u could come up with. Let me no cheers mate. Scott
Hi Scott, I haven't used Humbrol enamel washes before, but they look good. I think you could probably get a similar effect with just normal enamel paint and thinners - do you think? Definitely sounds interesting. I'd struggle since I tend to paint most of my models with enamels, rather than acrylics, so an enamel wash would kill the underlying paintjob, but if they flow as well as they seem to in the Humbrol videos they look good. Cheers mate, Dave
Dave's Model Workshop Hi Dave as u said the Humbrol is Enamel. An yes u would get the same effects, but WITH the washes it's MUCH simpler. An no u will Not damage the paints underneath. Just need to make sure there well cured or if u wanted to be extra safe u could use Matt clear sealer. Then add the wash. It's really amazing how say if you want to put moss it say brick wall's u just load up a number 1 brush put it on n the gaps were the cement would be an it's quite strange the way it just pulls it self into all the gaps in the brick work, or say a tank/plane has all the lines in the plastic put your number 1 load up put in the crack an it pulls it self into all the gaps BRILLIANT!!. Any on the surface just wipe away with cotton bud. Or say moss on tin roof lay a descent amount along the edge of the roof, get a 4 brush dip in thinners an dilute upwards Very simple an quick an effective but layering for me really adds the true effect with other washes. So just to confirm it is ENAMEL, I USE NOTHING ELSE. An don't like the effect to much just thin out with thinners an then just dry brush it out to reduce. I DO have some TAMIYA Acrylics but very rarely use em, just don't get the desired results. Dave seriously give em a go you'll be glad u did. You prime first, then paint the rust or metal colour you want to show through. Then a coat of hairspray. Then once that is cured, paint the final topcoat (whatever paint colour the barrel is supposed to have been painted). Then you wet it and chip away that final paint layer, exposing the rust/metal layer underneath.
Hi Patrick, either will work, just make sure your acrylics have time to fully dry and cure before you splash them with water. Enamels are easier, definitely. On mine, all the colours were enamels. Cheers, Dave
Very good stuff indeed... I just subscribed to your channel etc. My question is : how long can do you leave the hairspray layer to dry before you paint it and how long do you give it after you've painted it before chipping off ? Btw. how many pieces of kit have you lost off that balcony and I bet your wife loves it when she finds chipped paint all over the bathroom !
Hi Ian, thanks for your compliments, good to have you aboard. I leave the hairspray to dry for about 30 minutes, but basically as long as it's not tacky to the touch or still glossy in places, you'll be good to go. Once the paint is on I leave it again for about 30 minutes, but I was using quick-drying acrylics. For enamels I'd probably leave it to cure overnight before wetting it. I've been lucky, I haven't lost any bits over the edge, but I don't do it on very windy days! If one piece does go over the edge, it will disappear into a lawn beneath and I'll be screwed ;) And yes, I definitely make sure to clean up the bathroom sink when I'm finished, for precisely that reason! Cheers, Dave
I haven't tried it with brush painting, but it should still work - there's no chemical reason it wouldn't. Just try to keep the paint thin, not too thickly applied. Cheers, Dave
i was really curious how this works, and your video showed me more than enough! great tutorial, easy to understand and follow. subscribing!
Thanks Vinci! Glad you found it useful, and welcome aboard! Cheers, Dave
yes, ditto, well done
Where do you get those 55 gallon drums that was in the thumbnail? Thanks.

Thanks, Dave I don't want to spend money on acrylics! Thanks so much.

Great channel. Awesome tips
Is it possible to do this with spray paint if you don't have an airbrush?
You could try, as long as you keep the coat of paint relatively thin. I've not tried it myself - do please let me know if it works.
Excellent Dave!!.

Can I do additional painting and weathering after I am finished chipping?
Definitely! Fading, pigments, mud, all that sort of stuff afterwards!
i learned something new today.... thx
Glad to share the knowledge mate :) Dave
Can this technique be used with pre-shading? Because you would be putting two coats over the hairspray.
Yes, as long as your coats aren't layered on too thickly you'll be fine. I've done this with preshading over the hairspray and it was a-ok.
Thanks heaps.
Thank you. New subscriber here!
Good to have you aboard, Stanky!
when you do this do you prime, paint actual color, then spray hairspray and chip or do you need the rust color under actual paint?

If i use hair spray by tresmme . It will works or not? Thanks before sir.
Really long time but. Brand is irrevelant any hairspray will do
Does enamels or acrylics make a difference? We're all the colors acrylic or enamels or a mix??

What kind of clear coat do put on it at the end?
I generally use Testors Dullcote, but any matte varnish will work.
Or I also use Microscale Micro Flat.
Would this work if i apply paint on my model by brushes ?
I haven't tried it with brush painting, but it should still work - there's no chemical reason it wouldn't. Just try to keep the paint thin, not too thickly applied. Cheers, Dave
