- Once again, it is thanks to United Star Corporation, our friendly Toyota dealer in Aman Suria and now also in Nilai, that we are able to share our first quick drive up the mountain.
Other than a different front mask, a tail spoiler and some cosmetics, the key differences are a Sports-tuned suspension, inched up tyres, now 17- inch with lower profile tyres, and a 10-speed CVT that can be invoked in Sport Mode.
Interestingly, the TCU 'locks' the gear ratios, and allows the engine rpm to build up, just like in a normal transmission, and with 10 speeds, it feels like a set of super-close gear ratios.
The 10-speed box really gives the Vios a more sporty performance - I qouldn't be surprised if they decide to make it a standard feature for every variant.
As an added bonus, we get to check out the Vios GR Sport both in the dry and in the wet.

Uncle, just my suggestion for you to make a quick summary from what you got after the downhill drive..or just short rating for attributrs like
1. Handling -7/10
2. Braking - 8/10
3. NVH - 8/10
4. Performance - 7/10
5. Drivability...etc
Not bad la toyota vios,one thing I like it so quiet...
6. Comparison with model in the similar price range (for example, Almera does better in NVH; Vios handles corner better than Almera)
7. Verdict of choice to choose from in the similar price range (don't everytime every cars also GOOD GOOD and GOOD la...)

the headlight design and body kit is so good haha. transmission feels like its designed for sport its very good. shifts felt like a dual clutch 10 speed. shifts suddenly. not gradually like other cvts. the car is already fun but another 20-30 ps extra would be perfect. atleast another engine option. people would pay it

haziq hakim this is not even scammed. You should test drive yourself bro. The ECU is programmed to give a higher engine speed (rpm) in Sport Mode and hold at a higher range for better throttle response. Plus, this gets 10 speed direct shift cvt

@@h4ziq850 yeah this is more of a show car. for people to feel a bit better buying a b segment car. having cool body kit. thats it. no matter how they tune the ecu, have 10 speed transmission its still has 107 hp and its slow.
but for this price point many new cars are slow. only fast car comes to my mind that is automatic is fiesta 1.0 turbo. way faster than this. best handling in class also.

this is my everyday route up & downhill from kl-gtg, remind that now so many construction in gohtong area that heavy vehicle doing slow pace... but if i see a new or standard car going crazy in this route, i bet uncle driving it....
Base on Uncle YS style of driving, you don't expect that crazy driver is him.
hope soon UMW Toyota Malaysia make yaris GR-S too like vios because I am hatchback person at the same time can't afford RM299K GR yaris, so dapat yaris GR-S pon okay hahaha

@@appy7777 Corolla dekat pasaran lain seperti US, guna enjin Dynamic Force disertakan dengan CVT. Cuma pasaran kita, Corolla didatangkan dengan enjin Dual VVT-i yang lama.
Rav 4, Camry, sebab kenderaan yang lebih berat, CVT tak berapa sesuai untuk penggunaan ini. Maka, gearbox AT lebih sesuai untuk model-model tersebut.

Happy new year YS. The focused/confident but yet casual approach to driving fast is really cool. I guess it comes from decades of driving fast and driving different cars, which gives one a sense of practical realistic expectations of the limits of the car you are driving.
Honestly, I personally would not be comfortable driving the Vios like you YS, mainly because I don't have the rally racing experience you do. =)

I tested this car alr, pretty nice in handling and ECU setting, also nice given items
The handling I can corner with a 60km/h and above, the salesman shocked and scare with my driving haha since I haven't tell him I will "test" it
But sad case is the engine and others hardware never changed 😭
If Toyota willing to change the new engine or new gear box instead of just adjust ECU will be better

We have yet to drive the new City, so cannot comment.
City rs with dual clutch transmission same with continental car, vios gr using old cvt with fake 10speed, just stimulation if u want 20speed also can, for psychologically fast only.
@@ranceng6560 this is not fake CVT. Vios GR-S uses 10 speed direct shift CVT from Aisin K120

CVT mean continuous variable transmission, it don't have gear ratio and designed for fuel saving and comfortable but not for dynamic driving, it only stimulate fake 10 gears for syok sendiri, it nvr on par with torque converter and dual clutch transmission for dynamic drive.

I can see you are actually enjoying the drive. Good advise for others on what to do with the car in front. Need a professional advise from you, when we take a blind corner and there is a slow car in front, what should we do? Hard brake and stay on the lane or shoot across the other lane?

It depends on the situation, whether there is another car behind you trying to overtake, whether there is another corner, and if the car in front is likely to cut into your lane. Every situation is different, so you have to size it up and take the necessary action. Driving is a very live thing, so you have to be 100 percent attentive

Good video Uncle YS. I am deciding between G spec or GRS that cost RM9.2k more (7.7k + 1.5k cash rebate now).
1. Are the handling and driving experience better with GRS (gearbox and suspension tuned + 17 inch rim)?
2. Was this drive done in normal mode and not sport mode? I thought in sport mode, it will be 10 speed but the video at 6:28 minutes seemed to indicate it's in 7 speed.
You wont hit 10th speed on the climb or on acceleration. The GRS drives better.

What's the feeling of the handling of this Vios GR version?
If compare to Vento or Beetle or Polo
Why I say because price are nearest and segment also.
Beside, many people said Continental car 's handling always better and felt safety to drive

This one is very good. The suspension upgrade and the 17 inch wheels make a difference. I believe there are not many B segment cars with 17 inch wheels.

The Vento has more torque and has a DSG, so it is a faster car. The Vios has reliability written all over it; it is a Toyota.

Hi bro, please enlighten me? From your videos, why does it looks like this Vios is much steadier and composed during Genting ride when compared to the latest Civic FE? What about the body platform n sporty handling, can u summarize it up for me? I don't like the Altis, that's why I'm asking for this Vios only, please help me on this asap..
It is to do with the seat mountings, and also the speed. We are going much faster in the Civic than in the Vios.

Actually, all of them are fun to drive.The GR-S had good handling, City has best power, and the Mazda 2 has a 6-speed. Your final decision depends on which attribute you like best.
Uncle Khong, how would you compare the handling of this Vios GR Sport with it's sports tuned suspension vs the new Toyota Corolla Altis?
Altis is more for comfort, and handles well. This is tuned for sporty handling, and you will probably enjoy it more if you are a sporty driver.
@@YSKhongDriving Ahh I see, thank you uncle Khong. What about the rear torsion beam of the Vios vs the rear double wishbone of the Altis? I drove a Honda CRZ for a few years and didn’t like the feel of the torsion beam.

The Traction/Stability control of this car seems to be too intrusive for the driver to really take control of the car. It seems like the Almera Turbo which Uncle YS drove has a much less obtrusive (or probably one that can be completely turned off). Which would probably benefit it's sportier nature.
Another issue is that would 17 inches be overkill for a car as small as the Vios?
I think I tiened it off for the Almera. I forgot to turn off the Vios Traction control, and decided to just go with it. Most car companies set their traction control to intervene quite early to help drivers to regain control more easily, so we cannot blame them. This setting is for ordinary drivers who don't know how to drive well. For us, it does seem too early intervention. For some brands that make performance cars, they allow later intervention in Sports or Sport+ modes, but for lower cost cars, it is not done, possibly for cost reasons.

Hahaha, too technical. Traction control comes on whenever it likes, on under steer or oversteer. And the nose goes in or out when you power depending on where your exit line is straight or otherwise.

Each car has its own good points The Vios GR Sports was designed to gove a sporty drive, with short gears and sports suspension. The Almera is designed for better fuel consumption, and a co.fortable ride. Still it gave a good account of itself. But the Vios was more engaging because it had paddle shifters. So ot depends on what you are looking for in a car.

How do you keep yourself so planted on the seats with all those G's? Given stock seats don't hold you as much as bucket seats does.
Sitting position, proper belting up, left foot on foot rest, and I think the push pull technique also helps as it allows one to sit a little further back, thus sitting deeper into the seat.
