    Twenty seven years before this was recorded I played in a band with Rick Jackson, and he was just as phenomenal then as he is here. He is a man with incredible talent and no musician I've ever met deserves recognition and success more than he.

    I found a version of this about eight years ago with James Burton, Amos Garrett, Albert Lee, and a Canadian gentleman. Pretty dog gone rad version!!
    I recently ran on to this one- tantamount to, “Warp Factor Five, Mr. Sulu.”

    I must have herd this video for at least 50 times. Larry Carlton seems really inspired and all musicians are playing really good, not at least the drummer, Moyes Lucas. I wish someone would load some more videos from this concert, than the three available, at the present. Soeren. Dk.

    Yeow! What a GREAT video. It would have been so great to be there live.
    All the solos were great, but for me, I liked the keyboardist best. VERY nice chops and ideas.

    Funny I was messing with this progression, no where on this level, just the other day and kept asking myself where did this come from. It sounded like an old jazz standard, but did not know which. Now I do. Larry has always been my hero and after all these years of playing I am finally taking some lessons to learn the type voicings it takes to play these tunes. after 40 years of playing the learning never stops.

    This performance shows that it's not the instrument but the person that makes the tone. Larry Carlton is known for playing a Gibson ES 335 guitar, but makes a Telecaster sound like he is known to sound. Too many of us are searching for the tone, but it's already in our hands. This band is wonderful!

  • @JTNashville

    R.I.P. Chris Kent.

  • @marbleflat
    @marbleflat 13 років тому +1

    @veeoleary I'd still have identified that as a telecaster sight unseen (I've played both). The tele is a solid block of hard timber, so you get a pure string tone. The 335 has a hollow structure which contributes something else to the final sound, probably a mellower tone. All this assumes that the amp is giving a faithful reproduction of the instrument's original sound, of course, with no coloration (a big assumption).

    • @JohnDoe-jc3cl
      @JohnDoe-jc3cl 4 роки тому

      marbleflat - - I was just saying, this sounds like a Gibson 335, A slight of hand by Larry Carlton.
      Great song. Great, catchy composition. The musicians are really good. AND you can tell THEY ALL LOVE PLAYING TOGETHER.
      That little teeny tiny last part is not so common.

  • @TheReighnart
    @TheReighnart 11 років тому +5

    I agree the tone is in the fingers. But the telecaster is and always will be the most versatile guitar because it can sound how you want it to sound. Telecaster is just straight up a jazz guitar. :D

  • @geetarnut
    @geetarnut 15 років тому +2

    Actually, Larry will use tele's and strats for their ability to cut through the accompanying instruments, these guitars are the only types that can sing and make it through with the highs of the keyboards and not be muddy. He is quoted as saying this in some older guitar player mags.

  • @Jubal24
    @Jubal24 14 років тому +2

    While I agree that touch and playing style can dramatically effect tone, the right amp with the right settings can also darken the tone of a Tele. Larry has had numerous custom Dumble amps made.
    Honestly, the 335 sounds fuller. Larry definitely tones down the brightness of the Tele with lower tone setting and using primarily the neck pickup.

  • @af4k
    @af4k 12 років тому +1

    A Tele is pretty cool for jazz anyway. It doesn;t sound anything like an ES355. It just sounds like a tele with less than normal twang. People who think a fat F-holes guitar is the only instrument for playing jazz guitar need to listen to Carlton. Jeff Beck does it for me but Larry is a very fine player too. He really shows his chops well on this one!

    Presumably this was performed as a tribute to Zachary Breaux who died in this year trying to save a drowning swimmer whilst on holiday in Miami. I don't know much about Larry but maybe he switched guitar to get the jazz sound he needed for the tribute.
