Steve Smith was asked this multiple times, and every time he says that they do try everything to Handyman Corner and most of them do work.
He studied engineering before going into comedy.
Even if they "worked", they still needed to do a lot of tv magic to make them *look* like they work effectively.
Imagine this episode today with samples of one of those super-caffeinated 'energy drinks'.

Super caffeinated is the only way I can function most days. My coffee has 800mg of caffeine in a 12 Oz cup... but I fell asleep at 3pm and napped for 2 hours. I wish caffeine actually worked the same way for me as other people.

The later shows are OK,, btu you can clearly see certain changes, for example, Ranger Gord is no longer the friendless desperate person he was. Clearly someone felt it was too 'close to the bone', he whilst he is still self-aware and sensitive, he's not the same character, and as a result, he's not actually as funny, if funny at all.

Gord is the same tired joke over and over again, at least with Edgar and Hap you get a funny story and laugh at Red's reaction but with Gord there's nothing more to him than "I'm alone and I'm crazy"

Harold is supposed to be like the coddled, optimistic, city slicker oddball, and the direct foil to Red Green's gruff, old-fashioned, backwoods outdoorsman type. It's why their dynamic is so funny.
