I’d also recommend making sure it has a collar that isn’t worn out. Sometimes you can get really high quality polos from thrift stores if you look hard enough. I also wear a collar stay keep the collar looking crisp throughout the day. It also helps with older shirts that still look good, but the collar is a little worn.
I wear a long sleeved, cooling sports polos, they fit just right; look stylish/professional and keeps you from overheating

Tip: you can still wear bright colors if its your preference. Ideally a shiny fabric will work if you like. But ideally a bright color that has no printwork is a good tactic as long as you use a darker color to balance it out. And neutral colors as they usually go with everything.

I would add to the list always button up the first button. I took a picture on christmas with all the buttons opened and it looked uneven and sloppy.

The real question is tucked in or not tucked ?
The great thing about polos is it works with anything. No buttons is super casual and the more buttons the more formal. If your going for a casual fit than no tuck but if your going somewhere more dressy than definitely tuck it. You can also pop your collar which is when you unfold the collar to your polo and it stands straight up. This is a really preppy way to fashion a polo and only works for some people and occasions.
I only use one button at my job and no tuck because I work at retail as an employee. My manager does the same thing but the store manager and every single person I have seen above him wears theirs tucked in.

Actually I am a professional image consultant and have some pretty well known clients in sport, Hollywood, government, and law.
What he says is pretty much true so unfortunately, for you the moment you typed that response of yours, it removed all doubt as to your sartorial knowledge.
You kind of strike me as one of the guys that think a tee shirt with a graphic design or logo is high end fashion so as long as it is name brand or maybe not even name brand.
I am willing to bet you would not be able to tell the difference between regular cotton, Pima cotton, and Supima cotton nor could you confidently tell me tell what super 100 is and how to tell the difference between super 110 and 175.
