  • In The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Frodo and Sam reach Mount Doom, where, with Gollum's unintended assistance, they destroy the One Ring by casting it into the fires where it was forged. But how could Sauron neglect such a strategically vital location? Why were there no guards at the entrance of the mountain? In this video you'll discover the reasons why Sauron left the entrance to Mount Doom unguarded.

I use many different sources for the visuals I incorporate. It's not always clear who created some of the works or many individuals share the same work under their own name. Therefore I only credit those I am certain about.

Sauron was right though. Frodo himself succumbed and wanted to keep the one ring. The ring itself was only ACCIDENTALLY destroyed when Gollum was dancing and jumping for joy, then slipped off the side falling into the fires of Mt. Doom.

It wasn't an accident. Tolkien took pains to set up Gollum's fate and the final role he would play in the entire saga concerning the ring.

Gollum swore on the ring that he would not double cross frodo. The ring held him to his treachery, to its own demise

Sauron could never conceive of anyone holding the ring being willing to destroy it-and he was right.
The reality is that no one would’ve been able to throw it into the crack of doom. The only way it happened was through the intervention of Eru in causing gollum to slip during his capering with the ring and fall to his (and the ring’s) doom.

You bring up several excellent points and on that note I'd be interested in why Sauron didn't discover the ring in the poession of Gollum

I think your first reason is persuasive. The second is well used, but for me it always fails from what we're told specifically that Sauron considered the Ring lost or destroyed by elves. Although this is also problematic... if Sauron only retains life force because the Ring exists, how could he have thought it destroyed? The problem with the argument about the Eagles is that they were literally there, at the end. And they could have been "in the area" countless times. As soon as the Ring was revealed to Sauron at Mt Doom, he dispatched his Nazgul on winged beasts. But when the Nazgul were abroad, or before they got winged rides, how would Sauron have mobilised a response to the Eagles (even a single eagle) in time? What ever arguments there are against the Eagles, i don't think this is a good one...

  • @phelanwolf6747
    @phelanwolf6747 7 місяців тому +2

The real reason why they did not use the Eagles is that the story would have been very short. Mordor simply did not have the air force to stop the Eagles even if they saw them coming.

Plain and simple, Sauron didn't think anyone would desire to destroy The One Ring; let alone have the testicular fortitude to do so

  • @tam310

After all the effort he went to, and good points made, it’s laziness by Sauron not to stick a quick magic door on the Mount doom entrance.

The concept of how Sauron thought that anyone who had the ring would not be stupid enough to destroy it was also my first thought when I saw your title.

Mount Doom may have been a very private, personal, and even divine place for Sauron, considering the volcano is of Melkor's work. He did not want to have that place crowded with orcs

One does not simply walk into Mordor. Seriously, how many tourists/ringbearers has Sauron had show up ever since he moved into the region millennia earlier? Also, can you imagine losing the keys when you need them and having to search Barad-dur from top to bottom? Nobody would have heard from Sauron again until the Sixth or Seventh Ages!

  • @Rorschachqp

No sentient being who understood power could carry the ring or the ringbearer. That's why Frodo and Sam had to do it. Frodo could carry the ring, he has no idea or dreams of power while Sam could only think of gardening, Rosie, and Frodo. However, the Eagles most definitely imagine power so the Eagles were disqualified and it's also the reason why Frodo and Sam had to leave the Fellowship behind...Boromir, a hero, already proved this when he was tempted.
For a similar reason, the Ring left Gollum because all Gollum wanted was to keep the Ring and eat stuff, which is very bad for the Ring because he would not only keep it and keep it hidden, his unnaturally extended life from the Ring would mean that the Ring's "imprisonment" under Gollum would also be extended.

I love the story as written……but let’s be real. The eagles solve everything. lol
You are correct, they are the equivalent of airplanes…. blitzing a 16th century polish village. They would be unbeatable, undetectable and undeniable in a stealth mission to Mt Doom. Nothing in middle earth (with the exception of a dragon…..) would even have the speed to fathom what had happened until it was done. But I like Tolkien’s version better anyway

He could still have put a few guards there just incase. I don't really buy the reasoning. His existence was tied to the ring and he left the one thing that could destroy is unguarded.

    • @Crafty_Spirit

The whole of Mordor was guarded. If you ever see the vault of a bank, you may notice that the rooms are locked but not the deposit boxes. The place was also hostile to all life, including orcs, so you'd need several rotations per day. Also, it's conceivable that Sauron considered this place to be very private and significant to him and therefore did not want to have it defiled by orcs (and the Ringwraiths were needed elsewhere). It may even hold a sacred meaning to him, as Mount Doom was created by Morgoth's actions.

Do we think it could have been an Ent, or maybe an Entwife? Treebeard said he thought the Entwives would like the Shire, after hearing Merry and Pippin's description of It!
