I definitely loved Golden Son way more than Red Rising. However, the no breaks on the train pacing does bother me and I think it prevents from knowing the characters a little better. I agree that Darrow is a bit insufferable. I dont like HIM, but I love watching him affect the world around him. And the ending was very good! You did a good job breaking this book down, Allen.
21 minute video talking about how awesome Golden Son is? Yes please! Really great analysis, Allen. Your excitement for the themes explored makes me want to reread the entire series.
Fantastic review, Allen! True how difficult it was to follow Darrow's motivation for a huge portion of this book, but I think you brought it together when discussing how Darrow is forced to reflect on whether he's truly better than the people he's against. I love hearing your thoughts on Nero. I also agree about the inconsistent prose. I thought his writing improved tremendously throughout the trilogy but there are still those odd choices at times. The live show was so fun, and I also love hearing your in-depth thoughts!
Thanks for bringing up the bureaucracy aspect, Allen! It's not just the Golds who uphold the system, it's the other colours as well, all being happy with things as long as there's someone else below them... but the ending and the conveniences are still terrible :D
One thing though - while the Golds have low opinions of the other Colors they feel they should rule over - the Golds use each other as well - they really do not discriminate
“Sing, Muse, of the rage of Darrow” All I want to do is go back and reread the trilogy. I’m trying to push off iron gold til the end of the month so I can jump right into dark age afterwards with the discord
I don't know if anyone here has read it but the conversation and relationship between Nero and Darrow really reminds me of the one between Kate and Roland in the Kate Daniels series, with this conflict of ideology between two very similar characters where the hero could become like the villain but doesn't because for one the end justify the end and not the other. And at the same time the hero, and the reader, can really relate to the villain's perspective but he's going too far.
