What I also wanted to say; you became my favorite Rust building content creator not for the 'scriptedness', but rather for the clever editing. Rust, being a 3d game and all, can be rather hard to visualize while only seeing someone build something in 1st person. The multiple views really make a huge difference.
Thank you Sir. I don't know the first thing about editing videos and never edited a video in my life before my first Rust video, so I'm glad things are coming along :)
Great to see base design raw footage in vanilla and on a not so flat surface. I was thinking similarly about compounds as well. The electric furnaces nerfed compounds as you won't need large furnaces in your compound anymore to smelt efficiently. I still use compound walls, but often leave my compound gates (about 3) open on purpose when I go offline. This can greatly help grubs and counterraiders in eliminating the raiders.
It add a human element that makes the content more accessible, since we know they average content has tight edits, it is almost like bonus content. Thank you.
I love the candid player popping up ASSUMING he's getting roofcamped and you just waving back at him. People really focus on the negative in this game, but ive had some truly amazing experiences in rust and ive met some really cool people despite what people think the game is.
The compound comments are pretty spot on. Main reason I compound anything is if I plan to land heli's on the ground. I stopped building tall bases for the most part as once a base has honeycomb and more than an airlock chances of an online are near zero.
I really like your thought process on having a compound! Makes so much sense not to have walls all around your base. I think the only thing I would want to do is to build a smelt base for large furnace's. You're the base building GOAT!
Good question. Set up a refinery base and feed it wood through a conveyor. A single refinery can print so much charcoal you're not likely to run out. In this wipe we had over a box of charcoal from just the starting furnaces so we never really needed much more.

I never build compounds either for that exact reason. I love having counter raiders hold up the raiders long enough for me to patch. Turrets work amazingly well when they are placed properly. Neat little base. Loots spread out. It does the job. With externals and a hidden TC, no one is getting the bunkers and no one is sealing. Gives you PLENTY of time to seal the base... Unless the clan really hates you.
Fun walkthrough! I'm excitied about the approach, especially as someone who also hates compounds. I've found many ways where you can use turret pods or even electrical circuits to do a lot more than the basic high exterior wall could do. I hope that many more people will see the enormous benefits of smart, electrical circuits and the relatively little effort required to build them, once the basics have been understood. This could help promote a much more exciting meta in the game.
Hey man, wanted to say your building videos are amazing! Shout out to my friend who showed me your channel via the grail, It completely changed the game. These tutorials are some of the shining stars of rust and it's insane they aren't more viewed than they are. Your base designs are recognizable in the world and you love to see fellow Glightz enjoyers and the builds/adaptations out there. Thank you so much!
I stopped playing Rust several years ago but I like to keep up with builders and build videos. I really like your thought process when building and I wholeheartedly support the idea of having a turret perimeter as opposed to walls. One thing I liked to do was live in the furnace base and then have several 2x2 honeycombed bases all around (call it a village) with loot distributed in each of them. Due to the nature of how rust building works at some point adding another layer of honeycomb will not be cost effective anymore.
Shooting floor pixel gaps are the most goated thing I have ever built on Rust. They have saved my wipe b2b2b times and every base you build with any upper level pixel gaps I will 100% try. Wide gaps and double pixel TC gaps are 11/10. Only downside to the base I guess is one wall to loot but then again the Garage doors are spammed through like crazy so it’s alright. Overall an Incredible base and I hope to see a solo base in the future with unreal pixel gaps!
As always love the vid. Nice to see 'er in action! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on compounds. I love getting input from non traditional lines of thinking it helps me learn more. I dig you rationale as well def. makes sense to me I find that during offline, which is what happens to me most, they just ladder over syrenge up and bam. Ps. I’ve been living in a sentinel since I saw that base really. I have some modifications but I never build a compound. If I have that much stone I’ll just make another tower to live out of. You make a lot of good points about it being easier to hold a raid when you have a simple breech.
GameLightz -- I've been watching you for a while, and your tricks. I gotta say the way you blend all of the different tricks into your base is amazing. It is incredibly functional, and gives you the most usefulness and protection. You don't say this base will handle everything, you say, this will get splashed so trash goes here, love it. Also: I really like those double chain "peaks" on the roof, w/ that and the wide gaps that is an absolutely sick use of quick pvp mechanics. I tend to build smaller bases myself as i am a solo, and have never liked the huge chad towers, but if i were to live in a larger base yours is what i go for. Lastly compounds: i don't build them for the exact same reason you stated.
Fantastic base, I dont like to copy but use parts of base builds for my own unique ones, TOTALLY agree about the compounds, they just stop counters, the only upside for a compound is when using large furnaces or... when you die on your shooting floor when their outside and fall down you can keep your gear but the way you've built it, your turrets sort that out, gj as usual!
I first came across your channel on a short, where you were just bringing attention to a full length base video. I was kind of condescending by saying something to the effect of, “would like this base if you actually showed how it’s made”. I wanna apologize. You do show how to build, and seem incredibly nice. I’m happy I found your channel and subscribed. You even responded to that shitty comment I made politely and told me it’s just to bring attention to the main video, which I also watched. Thanks
Thank you Sir :) It's just the youtube game. They want me to make shorts. I haven't been too good about it though. If you have suggestions on how to do it better, in a way that won't annoy people, tell me. But the thing about my channel is that I generally do deep dives into rust mechanics, and shorts on building tricks tend to be more misleading than helpful, becuase you also have to cover the weaknesses, the issues, all that stuff.
You are the man. We need a wipe from a builder POV. And u aren't the classic meta builder. U have unique base designs and techniques which are really usefull especially for me who is a solo. U are the man
Love it.. your bases are always the best. For the electric furnaces you should look up how to fit them perfectly into a triangle, even when automized with all the splitters and what not. its awesome... peace
I kind of agree about compound walls, in my last wipe I used barbed barriers and turreted gatehouses. After a while all be raiders left us alone . They got tired of losing their kits 😂
Thanks for the of-the-cuff video, shows your also human and makes mistakes ;) We have all done the 6am way-too-late for building sessions ... :D I really like your take on the no compound situation and see exactly what you are on about - I will surely try and play that way for one wipe and see how it goes. Enjoy your vacation!
I lived in v2.0 this past wipe and it was really good. I even was playing solo,a nd it was still very easy to upkeep. No one was able to successfully raid me. Some offline attempts got a little loot, but this base holds to the principle of splitting loot so well that it wasn't an enormous setback. The online attempts were always easy to defend. Great build. I've used a lot of the concepts for my larger base builds. I'll be able to report on how it works out in a few weeks!
I'd definitely be interested in seeing ideas on improving compounds in general- With a clear list of "Reasons you don't use them", there's surely also potential for "Ways to get some of the best of both worlds". I definitely agree with the sentiment around just make big circle of wall though, for sure (For instance, what about an unsealed mini compound that's closer to the base itself-- If your turrets see the outside walls, you dodge them being usable cover for grubs but get some of the safety of walking around very close to your base. Like a hybridization of a funnel layer and a compound, instead of committing to either) (The more I think about this the more interested I am in how this might be able to work. If you angled the walls so that they're lengthwise to the sightlines of your turrets, you'd effectively have turret coverage for both the inside and outside of the wall, preventing either side from being effective cover for grubs/raiders. The walls being closer to your base at the ground means your shooting floor has better visibility closer to your base, etc)
There's always a solution. I tried "getting the best of both worlds" with the "Grail V2", except I'm not so much of a farmer and I only play 3-4 days in wipe so I rarely build the entire thing. The mini-china-wall there is designed so as to have peeks on nearly every spot outside of it. That said, design your idea, and post on my discord. Lots of avid builders who love to learn!
Gamelightz, I just want to thank you for teaching us everything you can and being the fuel for the flame when it comes to building. You are truly my inspiration ❤️
I made this base so many times its our fav, thank you. I also recently built it with an extra layer of triangles, bigger wide gaps and extra loot rooms so it can work for bigger group, but would love if you could make a bigger grail v3 one day ^^
Can I just say, I've always loved your content. The Subscribe on the twiggies is what got me, well played ;) Awesome bases, content, and persona. Please keep up the great work. Love from Rust Console. Blessed be!
finally someone is talking about how useles compounds are, why do you need then when the large furnace is not even useful anymore? When the real protection you get from torrets. I wish someone tried a compound with barricades, maybe it would be a good balance.
I really like the connection with the tc, although my fear in this type of base would be that they would climb the tc and start building floors ignoring the turrets, nice job as always
I never built compounds, and I think I didn't get offline raided very often because of that. Whenever I encounter a boom sound, it's always within a compound. I can't effectively counter a raid if it's inside a compound, so I stopped building compounds after 2K hours. This is especially true when playing on team limit servers, as it makes you nearly invincible to raiders since they won't carry 30 rockets in their inventory. The idea is to place externals and scatter random TC's around your base, preventing raid bases from being built nearby. I even place externals for external TC's, ensuring that raid bases can't be placed close. And they can't be safe. The thing is if they are coming to offline you with more than >20 rockets, they have to feel safe.
I agree 100% with the whole compound walls, I’m glad I wasn’t a,one in this thought process. I always thought it helps the raider more than it does the owner.
It's pretty interesting to see what you like, specialy as it's not exactly the same as what you do in your build videos. About sounds, I do struggle with the vending machine sound way more than the electric furnaces one !
Sir :) I should say, I have done the mini-china wall in wipe, and I definitely stand by how strong it is, but in the end, I'm just too lazy, and this is about exactly as much building as I'm happy to do in a wipe and no more.
i find HQMing the outside wall on the loot room closest to the TC, along with a random wall above the entrance, protects the loot rooms from being splashed, plus giving it a "we sealed a raid with hqm" kinda vibe to hide it
I've always hated compounds. I built them basically to keep helis and large furnaces safe but they're such an inconvenience. They also make wiping raiders much harder in the event you do get onlined.
thinking about those turret pods. I always find myself hating when i craft a sheet metal double door, just to replace it with a garage door. Might steal that idea and repurpose my double doors next wipe I play
I don’t know if you finished your wipe all ready or done it but you should put dabble chilling fence where the turrets are or an hv senser so when people who are not authorized it will open and dead bc with out compound it is really easy to destroy the turrets
Build the grail v2 this wipe, got semi raided and they didn't even get TC, got to the sheet metal wall before it. Very nicely designed, added a mini hanger on top for storage :) Keep up the great videos.
Nice to see it in use in a wipe situation (and your mistakes when building it). Enjoyed the rambling style of video aswell, do you always play blue lagoon US? I'm sure I've seen a few others build the grail on other servers without the compound before aswell so it must be a semi-common thing to ignore the compound (especially post electric furnaces)
It may sound expensive but I keep the metal blades for barricades and I use it as a compound. No cover for raiders or grubs yet still forcing them in choke points
I showed up my new teammate this video to open his eyes on building philosophy. I just rewatached it again and I think it is still your one of the best videos ever! :) Are you planing to cover new (May 2024) update and explain what bunkers has been patched?
Yea bloo lagoon is ''full pop'' cause they decrease the slots, 400-450 day1, 300 day 2, 250 day3 you get the idea. I agree on the compound part, tho if you play main servers and get onlined alot (rarely happens after combat update), sealing the compound can be gamechanging.
Yeah we noticed there was 450 day one and day 2 there was like a 70man queue because they dropped the pop. I dunno what that's about. But 250-300 ppl for that map size, I think fair to call it full pop.
@@GameLightz Bloo lagoon is a nice server in terms of how its modded, but when it drops the playercount day 2 by 100-150, it kills the server... But blooprint wants to make money so thats probably the reason.
The compound stuff is completely true though. The amount of times I have a muppet of a team mate that can’t go to bed until the compound is done on wipe day. And I have to explain how unnecessary a compound is to survive an offline.
I love how the builder of my favorite rust base fucks up his own double pixel bunker and is an absolute goober of an electrician. Jokes aside I build this same base every wipe and the amount of failed offline attempts is just funny (they pummel until they hit the core which has no loot).
We quite literally have the exact same reasons for disliking compounds. I refuse to build them, the only time i get offlined and actually lose my base is if I build a compound
Hey Gamelightz! I love your vids. Have you considered adding the sneaky floorstack turrets to your compound? A UA-camr named Rickslag posted a video on them and they use the exact same tech as your all of the pixel bunkers and everything, so I figure you would be the perfect one for the job!
so it's better not to use the loot room just above core on the second story? I'm a bit confused by that because the loot on the 3rd story is only protected by one wall. This next wipe will be my first time building a base like this so apologies for the possibly dumb question
It's fine that it's protected by 1 wall, since the lootrooms are dispersed in a way where it's 1 wall to each of them, and there are 3 of them, so it's fine. But we never leave anything really good there when offline in any case, so it operates kind of as an "open core" (except it's an open corridor with easy access loot/crafting).
@@GameLightz Alright, so it’s best to put most of our best loot in the external bunkers/the pixel bunkers on the roof then? Just want to be sure since this is gonna be the design I use
@@nsnstrike4705 Split between the external bunkers and the pixelgaps. It's up to you. The idea is to have what you need to quickly fix up and continue playing the next day. Not so much to be "raid proof" :)
I have, of course, a version of the temple with a double godbunker incorporated. I just haven't done anything with it yet since I have to test it a lot in wipe, just to make sure there are no unforseen issues. By itself, it doesn't merit a video yet, but when I improve some more and learn more things, I'll do a video with that
At the end of a wipe me and the lads opened every door to our base and filled the turrets and traps to the brim with bullets. It is then that I truly learned that having no compound is better at keeping the grubs out. I got a solid few hours of free content watching nakeds get shot at by bolties and pythons.
nah it's much harder to rush turrets than a compound but if you're a trio just messing around I guess whatever works. my groups needs those large furnies up asap
That's exactly why it was designed in that way, with multiple-redundant peeks outwards, but quite honestly, I more enjoy the openness of this :) I like baiting people over to the turrets, all sorts of shennanigans.
Dude the part about no walls, and having turrets as compound walls... I've been doing the same thing for years. I've been offlined so many times but they never get the loot also. What I noticed especially on 2x servers and such people just fly on top of your base and raid down safely, nobody can really counter if you have guys on top of the base being raided and counters have to ladder over. Only scrappy can counter but they are still at a disadvantage. Not to mention people just target compounded bases a lot more because they look richer.
If you look at my roof, it's an hqm block. The base is also designed such that a top-down raid is very unoptimal in terms of getting our loot when we're offline. But an online topdown. hmm.. well, hope to get one of those one day and test. It's the riskiest kind of raid so people don't tend to do it.
Set up the electric furances with a memory cell that way they turn off when smelting is complete.. they also turn on when adding ore to them (after initial manual turn-on) Power to conveyors (daisy chain) / last conveyor passthrough to memory cell / memory cell power out to spliters. 1st conveyor filter pass connects to memory cell SET / 2nd conveyor filter fail connects to memory cell RESET. thats it, will be all automated then.
That unfortunately won't change the underlying fact that my all-consuming-furnaces are empty. It might just be that seeing them empty and silent will be even more horrifying.
Something that I found is that SAM sites with peaks show ant 5:11 don't really work well... I've tried them and most of the time the SAM sites shoot the chainlink fence peaks. Probably have to raise the SAM sites a floor up so they don't do that.
I build a modified deathknell mini every single wipe. :) added one floor to fit in a spacious open core and two pancake layers. also added two stairs bunkers and a few new modified gatehouses of yours :). I just love it and will build it until I die.
Hello man, awesome base. I would like to build the Grail but dont know anything about Electrics, could you please share your circuits for turrets and everything? It would be really helpful. I thank you
Nice. Now I can say "I don't have a compound because of tactical reasons" and not "I'm poor." Thanks for sharing your base and knowledge with us, GameLightz! Do you plan to upload wipe content in the future? Or do you prefer building vids only?
Never wall in your compound because then you can get top down raided without counters ever showing up. Learned that years ago, turrets are better than compound walls.

Nice! Can't wait to hear and see
I'd definitely be interested in seeing ideas on improving compounds in general- With a clear list of "Reasons you don't use them", there's surely also potential for "Ways to get some of the best of both worlds".
I definitely agree with the sentiment around just make big circle of wall though, for sure
(For instance, what about an unsealed mini compound that's closer to the base itself-- If your turrets see the outside walls, you dodge them being usable cover for grubs but get some of the safety of walking around very close to your base. Like a hybridization of a funnel layer and a compound, instead of committing to either)
(The more I think about this the more interested I am in how this might be able to work.
Since the industrial update you can just setup a oil refinery, double large furnace base close to your base which is pretty kewl
Gamelightz, I just want to thank you for teaching us everything you can and being the fuel for the flame when it comes to building. You are truly my inspiration ❤️
Thank you so much! It's my pleasure, I'm still as excited about rust building as I was 2 years ago
I made this base so many times its our fav, thank you. I also recently built it with an extra layer of triangles, bigger wide gaps and extra loot rooms so it can work for bigger group, but would love if you could make a bigger grail v3 one day ^^
Would be nice seeing you make a video/movie of your regular wipe and how you get through it!
I'll do that
Waow those boxes are so well sorted, must've been someone very handsome that did that.
No, I know the guy. Spawn of Nurgle.
Can I just say, I've always loved your content. The Subscribe on the twiggies is what got me, well played ;)
Awesome bases, content, and persona. Please keep up the great work. Love from Rust Console.
Blessed be!
Blessed be!
Come to my discord I'd like to verify something with u regarding console, if u have the time
@GameLightz sure, I'll join up and send you a message, thanks for reaching out! :)
finally someone is talking about how useles compounds are, why do you need then when the large furnace is not even useful anymore? When the real protection you get from torrets. I wish someone tried a compound with barricades, maybe it would be a good balance.
a sea of barricades and minefiled around that
loving your content mate. i bet you could make some cool wipe videos of you and your friends just having fun and building the base
Would love to, but no joke, I keep forgetting to hit record
I really like the connection with the tc, although my fear in this type of base would be that they would climb the tc and start building floors ignoring the turrets, nice job as always
Wait. wait.
NELTU????
DM me in discord immediately!
I love the "It's just trash here...(holy stone) I need to have a talk with someone..." lmao
You are awesome. Been following you for awhile. Thanks for all the insights.
It's pretty interesting to see what you like, specialy as it's not exactly the same as what you do in your build videos. About sounds, I do struggle with the vending machine sound way more than the electric furnaces one !
Sir :)
I should say, I have done the mini-china wall in wipe, and I definitely stand by how strong it is, but in the end, I'm just too lazy, and this is about exactly as much building as I'm happy to do in a wipe and no more.
Great casual video really loved it could you give us a base video on what you're perfect (actual wipe) grail 1.5 would look like
Very good video 10/10, one of my favourite videos from you.
i find HQMing the outside wall on the loot room closest to the TC, along with a random wall above the entrance, protects the loot rooms from being splashed, plus giving it a "we sealed a raid with hqm" kinda vibe to hide it
Another thing I've started doing is adding garage doors inside that 2nd floor lootroom, now that it's possible to do it with boxes there.
@@GameLightz ohhh shit, good idea
I've always hated compounds. I built them basically to keep helis and large furnaces safe but they're such an inconvenience. They also make wiping raiders much harder in the event you do get onlined.
would love to see you play a wipe :)
thinking about those turret pods. I always find myself hating when i craft a sheet metal double door, just to replace it with a garage door. Might steal that idea and repurpose my double doors next wipe I play
I was a bit haphazard there. Make the side doors open inwards, and the base-facing door open outwards.
I don’t know if you finished your wipe all ready or done it but you should put dabble chilling fence where the turrets are or an hv senser so when people who are not authorized it will open and dead bc with out compound it is really easy to destroy the turrets
The turret pods are closed down when we're offline so it's alright :)
No, I switch server every wipe almost :) Depends on what friends want to play.
Love the no compound probably going to start seeing those more after this
best build channel that i know of!
It may sound expensive but I keep the metal blades for barricades and I use it as a compound. No cover for raiders or grubs yet still forcing them in choke points
hah, nice! Might steal that
@@GameLightz It wont stop a grub to boost in but it's not meant to protect large furnaces ;)
AHAHAHAHHAHA "i need to have a talk with someone" after the pause 😆2:00
I showed up my new teammate this video to open his eyes on building philosophy. I just rewatached it again and I think it is still your one of the best videos ever! :)
Are you planing to cover new (May 2024) update and explain what bunkers has been patched?
awesome video, i wonder who that little goblin was near the end...
Love your videos. So fun Tour in your base. My new MVB UA-camr. I learn so much from you. Thanks!
Your teammates seem very capable and not afk :P
really compelling argument for compounds, actually may have converted me to a non compounder
The compound stuff is completely true though.
The amount of times I have a muppet of a team mate that can’t go to bed until the compound is done on wipe day.
And I have to explain how unnecessary a compound is to survive an offline.
great vid man! thanks for sharing this with us :)
very good and interesting things in one short video:)
I love how the builder of my favorite rust base fucks up his own double pixel bunker and is an absolute goober of an electrician. Jokes aside I build this same base every wipe and the amount of failed offline attempts is just funny (they pummel until they hit the core which has no loot).
CORRECT
We quite literally have the exact same reasons for disliking compounds.
I refuse to build them, the only time i get offlined and actually lose my base is if I build a compound
ADVENTURES! :))) I'm a sub
Hey Gamelightz! I love your vids. Have you considered adding the sneaky floorstack turrets to your compound? A UA-camr named Rickslag posted a video on them and they use the exact same tech as your all of the pixel bunkers and everything, so I figure you would be the perfect one for the job!
I showed stuff like that in previous videos. It's fun, but I don't really need it so much.
so it's better not to use the loot room just above core on the second story?
@@GameLightz Alright, thank you for the responses man, I love that you read every comment!
Dude, I've always said the same thing. Compounds just give the offliners a safe space from counters.
Hey, I’d love to see your god bunker included on ur temple v2 design but instead of roofs using the mini deathknell 2nd floor loot room concept
I just think that would be a ton of different bunkers and loot left behind if you get raided
Correct, this is our trio meta.
Aye when we gunna get a gamelightz wipe video. Impromptu videos a fun too thanks for the tour
That's exactly why it was designed in that way, with multiple-redundant peeks outwards, but quite honestly, I more enjoy the openness of this :)
I like baiting people over to the turrets, all sorts of shennanigans.
It's the riskiest kind of raid so people don't tend to do it.
awesome vid as always!
amazing video and base. I should think about building compound wall. 1 more question. How to get garage door like your?
I use mostly twitch drop skins, so I dunno how you could get them.
This was so cool to see!
it actually did made me think about the compound as something not mandatory or maybe even it convinced me to try a wipe without a compound
:>
It's there only for mlrs really
I build a modified deathknell mini every single wipe. :) added one floor to fit in a spacious open core and two pancake layers. also added two stairs bunkers and a few new modified gatehouses of yours :). I just love it and will build it until I die.
I call it the deathknell mini maxi :)
Hello man, awesome base. I would like to build the Grail but dont know anything about Electrics, could you please share your circuits for turrets and everything? It would be really helpful. I thank you
I'd suggest talking to a registered Rust electrician for that :)
I'm the worst of the worst
Nice. Now I can say "I don't have a compound because of tactical reasons" and not "I'm poor." Thanks for sharing your base and knowledge with us, GameLightz! Do you plan to upload wipe content in the future? Or do you prefer building vids only?
Whenever I record a wipe it turns out miserable :/
The gods disapprove of me being a wipe youtuber
@@GameLightz keep trying 😊
Never wall in your compound because then you can get top down raided without counters ever showing up. Learned that years ago, turrets are better than compound walls.
