    Hi thank you for your video I am relatively new to the building trade. I am on paper I am level 3 diploma qualified. Joiner However. I'm still learning. As I am dyslexic with slow processing speed I find it hard sometime to remember and taking absolutely everything in. You just explained that hip roof roof really really well. I work with somebody as an apprentice. However he doesn't really show me the marking out and things. I basically have to just do the cutting from the patterns spas etc/labour. So I'm going to look forward to your other videos. I love the way you really explain everything very slowly. So thank you so much for that. I am a new subscriber to you so thank you for your training. I do normally watch skill builder. On UA-cam he is a very experienced joiner Carpenter. However I have noticed he runs through things really quickly and. To me goes too quick. When speaking. And a lot of the videos are time lapsed a lot and the bits you really would want to home into. You miss. Because technically you meant to already know that stuff. But yeah thank you and keep up the good work. And I look forward to your future videos cheers Steve

    Nice work lads , rich I love the explanations although I must admit I don’t fully understand how to get all the cuts etc but I’d rather have someone trying to explain what’s happening rather than someone pretending it all went in without any drama .
    Have a good 2025 lads love the videos

    This shows why its called a barstard roof without a shadow of doubt. The main point is you guys showed it aint easy and the attention to detail is second to none. I bet your roofers love you as the first fix is spot on.

    Great explanation from a top quality tradesmen. As an experienced carpenter myself I know how tricky these roofs can be. I've always called them clipped hips or dutch gable roofs as they are all the same angle. A barstard hip is two different pitches coming together on a hip. Also the plumbed height from the back of the plate to the top of the rafter, l was taught it was called the rafter backing angle. Have a great Christmas and keep these great videos coming.

    Nicely explained Rich, even though some (a lot!) of it went over my head! 😮 I did wonder what happened to the wall and wall plate that extended past the hip rafters? I caught a very slight glimpse of it at the end. Have a great Christmas all of you and I’ll see you whenever you’re back.

My daughter has just had a hip roof done on her extention and the guys have done a superb job setting it into the existing roof, blends in so well. Watching this has now made me realise how complicated it can be. Im a sparky so Im the one who comes in and takes all the glory 😁. The poor old chippy's work is mostly unseen.

    I don't know if you have done them already I would really love you to show me the best way to do the
    The bird's mouth cuts.. and setting out for them.. I know it's something to do with your plum cuts and the angle off the roof. But putting all that together. I'm not sure how you actually do the actual birds mouth as I said before I normally have just follow the pattern spas and not the marking out. Thank you Steve

    Excellent stuff, great to see how you work it all out, and then see it all work out exactly as you calculated!
    I would’ve liked to have seen how you finished the corners near near the hip, i can see you would’ve had to cut back the end wall block work slightly, but what then? Did you add Jack rafters until in line with the end wall plate?
    There wasn’t a clear shot of it when Adam did the last walk round and I can’t picture it in my head.

    Using the shorter king rather you could have worked out the half span to then work out where the hips are going. You don’t need the string lines, just some me simple maths. Correct me if I’m wrong as not being there I can’t be 💯 sure I’m seeing it correctly. You could also work it from the height differences of the two plates

  • @cbuts9240
    @cbuts9240 Місяць тому +1

    You you clearly know what you are doing rich, great job but the hip is always 45degrees if both pitches are the same, after the higher plate height has been transfered onto the rafter as you done initially you can just measure the same height above plate on the side of that rafter as the height above plate on the higher rafter and that is the centre of your hip and just measure in from your lower plate to that line. Just saves stringing the lines round. Well done again.

    Rather than using a piece of batten, just measure down ridge board the height above plate then measure from there to outside corner of plate.

      Hello Woody. Yes mate the draw has taken place and the winners notified via the comments section of the competition video, although only two have come forward up to now. I didn't want to announce it in case we get people emailing us saying that they are someone that they are not because their name and email may have no correlation to their UA-cam handle! I know I know, I'm an over-thinker! As for the BCH donations, we have some HUGE news about that and all will be revealed on Christmas Day! Cheers mate, hope you're well.

    Thanks so much for putting together your great videos. I’m reroofing my house in the next months and am interested in the bearing on the wall plate, with the 65mm birds mouth there’s some loss of bearing, is that ever a problem? wondering if the rafters are overspec-ed in your case and so your aren’t worried but with a larger span it would need full bearing? Thanks!

  • @amazing451
    @amazing451 Місяць тому

    Good job explaining all that Rich, had to watch some points a few times to understand them. I understand that your hip didn't bisect in the corner like a normal hip would because of the height differences in the wallplates, but I always thought that a Bastard hip is a roof that occurs when the pitches of the common rafters are different each side of the hip, because the span of the common rafters are unequal to each other. However, on that roof all the 3 pitches were 32 degrees and the span of the common rafters were the same. Would this technically be classed as a Bastard Hip because normally the jack rafters hit the hip rafter at different points on each side of the hip rafter with Bastard hips ?

  • @jamesblair4709
    @jamesblair4709 Місяць тому +16

    Sorry but a bastard hip roof is where two different angles come together and you compensate the outside corner to marry round so soffit and facia retain the same size, this is a jerkinhed roof, where the angle of each roof is equal but the end wall of the hip is located further in.

    • @Mr_A_Builders
      @Mr_A_Builders  Місяць тому +4

      It was more of an associated roof play on words James because it was a bastard to do. I am aware of the details of an actual bastard roof but we’ve got to get the views in somehow 😁🎄👍🏻

    • @jamesblair4709
      @jamesblair4709 Місяць тому

      @Mr_A_Builders I appreciate the honesty but feel the lack of knowledge to type of roof, and the misleading video description will not help any other youngsters or tradesmen who hit an issue with a real bastard hip and will not find this video helpful. Call the video what it actually is and teach people especially if your description says watch and learn! Your videos are generally ok and produce good info for trades and diy.
