I know a girl who does research on wild lizards at a university. this is exactly how they catch their lizards for research. i'm sure they wouldn't do it this way if it harms them
For anyone coming along after this who might see the comment heres a basic explanation: TL;DR, this is pretty much harmless to the lizards, just a little scary The slipknot and lizard basically limit the amount of force being applied to the lizard. You catch small lizards because they don't weigh much, and the only pressure being applied to them is from their own body weight (minimal and harmless). Lizards are good for this kind of activity because they naturally like to sit around, and have two responses when found; not moving and hoping they havent been seen, and bolting (makes them easier to catch, and easier to run). If you try and catch a lizard with your hand you will almost certainly do serious damage to its body, especially if you are an excited child who isn't regulating the pressure they apply. Humans can squeeze with more than 30kgs of pressure, an order of magnitude more than what is applied to the lizard while suspended, and can instantly crush their entire body. So long as you are careful in how you handle them, they may not even drop their tails (or just go for ones that don't have that mechanism). During the video they may look a bit stunned when they are suspended, this is because they are. A common response with many many animals when they know they have been caught and are unlikely to escape is to play dead, and most animals when suspended by their neck (you see the same in puppies and kittens, for example) will just go limp or stick their legs out. If they were choking, they would be panicking and flailing every time. Stop being afraid or angry because you don't understand something, and try learning about it before deciding what you think.
honestly the people who think this harms the lizards don't own lizards. lol lizards can fall from pretty extreme heights and still be fine. Hell even mine jump from my shoulder to the floor and are more than okay. If the animals are perfectly healthy they don't won't be hurt orn harmed. It's quick, harmless, and easy. The only thing that goes through the lizards mind is "Oh shit I've been caught" as it tries to escape. No need to threaten someone's family, religious beliefs etc, just because you disagree with it. Not only is threatening people so highly immature and ignorant but also against the law and you could risk jail time for that. Think before you type, also it's hypocritical to say this is harmful as you've (other commenters ) have probably done the same thing or worse to animals growing up. let's not get too carried away.
Ik right got a bannana gecko and her skin is like tissue paper and she is always jumb from branch to branch in her enclosure and falls occasionally and acts like nothing happened
This was a very sweet video. It was engaging to watch and I'm sure your family appreciated how lovingly filmed and carefully put together it all was. While I fear for the little lizards because it's a game at their expense, I appreciate how you make an effort to spend time with the people you love.
Hi Ryan! Just wanted to give you a quick shout out to tell you how much Jeff and I love watching your videos. Always entertaining and inspirational. You're living the life!
this is great because when I go down to Florida there are always a whole lot of lizards and it's my only chance to catch em and this along with the lizard trap idea I had is full proof whoop.
My Father taught my brothers and I the same long blade of grass method when we were younger, we thought about ways to improve on the design and came up with something we liked and worked. we took our old fishing poles (break downs) took the top part of the fishing pole, ran some fishing line and a cinch knot at the end and it worked great! I have some great summer memories catching lizards with my brothers.
always just snuck up on them, distracted with one hand them grabbed them with the other hand. That's a great way to catch them. especially the alligator lizards. Great video and prayer.
The good Lord always bless you in Jesus name...there is a lizard in my living room staying under the corner sofa I caught him the other day and i released him outside (he came back!) Now I'm going to feed him some fruit.
If anyone could help me I’m having a hard taking the line off them and it seems very tight first off is it harmful and am I doing something wrong and also how do I take it off easily
try and keep track of what way the loop goes, and rather than pulling on anything just hold the lizard and push the line back towards them. If its angled the same way as the loop it will slide back through without trouble, opening the loop again. To better understand what I mean, look at a dog choker or something like that, or just practice opening it by pushing. If you look closely at the line you can see the mechanics of it. Its not at all harmful, just be careful not to be too jerky with the line. They are only getting pressure from their own body weight, which is not nearly enough to actually do harm if they are a small lizard. If its a larger lizard try pulling sideways gently and keep them on the ground rather than suspending them. Once you have a grip on the lizard (be gentle, its easy to crush them) do not pull on the string at all in any direction. Edit: another way to explain how to push it is with a b. b is your lasso, you want the line to be at that angle. The loop comes back around and intersects the line, so push like you are pushing the straight part down
This is awesome; but use dental floss. I do this alot in my back yard (I live in Florida), and dental floss is alot softer and cannot hurt them. By the way, if anyone is planning on doing this in Florida, you'd probably be catching a Brown Anole (an invasive, yet harmless, species). if you look on their neck after you catch them, you can see a red patch; and if you pull on that a dewlap that's used for attracting mates will pop out if its a male (Which you can tell by the markings on the back, males have colums of faint dots as opposed to the zig zag on a female)!
Pearson DeRuiter is that the lizard species that is common around the Disney parks. I have seen them since I was five and always wondered what they were.
But how do you tell what lizard belongs to each person in the race? Don't they all look the same? And they seemed to all crisscross paths and get all mixed together during the race.
that looks like a ton of fun but unfortunately i live in canada we dont really have any lizards and the few that we do move so slow from the cold you just walk up and grab them
I would prefer the water bottle method better because it doesn't harm the lizards I am a collector but I buy my reptiles but sometimes if a see one that's really beautiful I will catch it I have a backpack with supplies to catch in breed reptiles I also have a extra stash of money saved up to buy more lizards or amphibians cages, food, reptiles, amphibians, extra supplies and I have shovels everything to find reptiles and amphibians I also catch other wild animals
At first this video scared me because it looks as if your yanking lizard by its neck but after you let them go o felt a bit better but I wish there was a simpler way to catch them ?
+SS Chok Fishing line is not sharp lizards weight less than 2 ounces. I have caught thousands and never hurt one. This method will not hurt them just be gentle.
All those lizards in a bucket I would love to take one home and treat it like a king/queen I would love to do this with you guys and possibly.....take them home (lizards)
its alarming, but as long as you aren't jerking the string around its not harmful. They weigh almost nothing and the only force being exerted on them if you aren't shaking the line is their own body weight. Humans can apply more than 30kgs gripping with our bare hands, which can instantly crush them. You suspend them just long enough to get a decent position to grip them, then take the string off. If they are in a poor position, I would honestly expect an excited child to crush them (hence the importance of having control over them before holding them with your hands).

Is this actually the best way how to catch lizards
It does harm them

I catch them with my hands. It is not as effective but i think it is more fun
Yollow Feet How
It’s so hard
Yollow Feet i do it too... i also think its more fun
MARK SAMIR no it ain't lol
Then how do you catch them with hand? I’m so bad at it
honestly the people who think this harms the lizards don't own lizards. lol lizards can fall from pretty extreme heights and still be fine. Thanks for the ending brother. We need more like you.

Thank you Tia. Hope you Jeff and the kids are doing well. Thanks for watching. Small world.
Excellent as always!!
Thank you.
We loved this and it was easy to make! My 8-year old son is an aspiring lizard catching expert. We live in the Mojave. Thanks!
I would but I'm terrified of lizards
So much hate in the comments. People need to research before they type. This method is actually used by professional herpetologists
+Harrypotter Doctorwho all feeling based no experience. Thanks for watching.
Harrypotter Doctorwho thanks for actually being smart.
Awesome videos, God bless you and your family. Thank you for sharing a new way of catching these critters. I just subscribed 😊

I was pissed off today because I lost my car keys. This made my day. Thank you.
Grew up catching those blue bellies with long stalks of grass. My son got a real kick out of the idea. Thanks for taking me back in time 🤙
Great video and appreciate you sharing that prayer. God Bless!
Thank you Joe.
always just snuck up on them, distracted with one hand them grabbed them with the other hand. That's a great way to catch them. especially the alligator lizards. Great video and prayer.
Thank you Jacob.
I really hope you're the kind of dad that tells "dad jokes" all the time and embarrasses his kids in an adorable way
+Can i have A cookie? Always.
your video clip comes with prayer, that the best part. Thanks
Awesome!!! I've tried the tall grass method, but most of the grass is getting to be brittle and dried. I will try this method for sure. Thanks!!!
+Bart Thatcher Glad to help.
Bart Thatcher you can also use dental floss
My dad taught me how to catch snakes when I was younger this is very reminiscent of those times thanks for the video:)
The good Lord always bless you in Jesus name...there is a lizard in my living room staying under the corner sofa I caught him the other day and i released him outside (he came back!) Now I'm going to feed him some fruit.
Very cool. I live in WA State. Not many lizards here on the West side of the mountains. We go to the Bahamas a lot and there are a TON there!

I'm going to try this when my cousin comes over for the summer, we got tons of little lizards in California.
What state is this in?, I live in Orlando and never seen this type of lizard before.
Looks like fence lizards, you won't find them in orlando. They live on the west coast. California is where these lizards are commonly found.
Does it hurt the lizards
me here for the project
Anyone have advice where to look 👀 for lizards 🦎 at meh home? Anywhere?!
Amen and thank you
My grandmother allows me to keep reptiles and amphibians in our apartment but if the landlord or pest control people come I have to hide them .
What kind of lizard was it that had the blue stomach
Not a 100 percent sure, but i think it's a eastern fence lizard or a blue belly lizard.common in northern United States.
@@jordymeraz3994 Most likely western fence lizards. You can find them all over california.
Ryan K Win I found something check out the emerald swift lizards 🦎 looks like it
@@monvalleytruth5111 cool

+Gabythelasteggstanding egg Its harmless really. Much safer for them than grabbing them by hand.
Been doing this for 60 years. But Ya just cannot catch the Fringe-Toed Lizard this way.
I think that was so cool and mean at the same time🐊🐉
Danni Ribolin nope. He lets them go.
I catch lizards with my bare hands
My grandpas name is actually mike
“No theyre not MATING...”
amen brother
We use crappie rods and catch collard lizards and sell them for 5 dollars a piece.
Its easy especially compared to catching bigger lizards thata still fast like agamas
im scared of insect like legit damn scared even lizards
Wtf he said it like it was obious "lizard racing
its not aggressive at all.... how about house lizard??
thats a lot of lizerds look 5:07
From a lifelong reptile keeper enthusiast, this is horribly cruel. Teaching kids to torment animals for fun is sick.
I'm scared of lizards😰😭
+Mini Sugar They wouldn't hurt you.
I do it the regular way, just catch them with your hands.
just be aware humans can grip with over 30kgs of force and if you aren't careful you can cause fatal damage without even realising.
Yeah kids! Capturing a harmless lizard with a tiny noose to forcefully race them for your own enjoyment is family fun!
+SCIPR Animates Yup you nailed it and tried to make it mean. No family fun for you as s kid ?
SCIPR Animates I'm dying at this comment 😂😂😂😂😂
Ignorant.
I don't have a grandpa
Please trying using weed or something else instead of fishing lines. They are very sharp and can hurt the lizards.
+SS Chok Fishing line is not sharp lizards weight less than 2 ounces. I have caught thousands and never hurt one. This method will not hurt them just be gentle.
Wow
i agree with andrea(exept swear words)

No, where did you see anything die you idiot?
Bueno por lo menos ya se cazar mi propio comida
This has got to be the whitest thing I’ve ever seen

You’re saying that forcefully pulling them back with something around their neck and then letting them hang doesn’t bother them? that’s a damn lie
