My college and career center lady at HS was such a gem. She was so sweet. I spent a lot of time with her in my junior and senior year. She would get your info and then print papers with lists of scholarships that you would have the best chance of winning! Such a kind lady. I wish I could thank her. I’m a junior in high school currently and my main reason for not wanting to go to college was is money. I thought that scholarships were only for the “smart” kids and seeing this has made me reconsider college. It sounds stupid but I’ve always thought how cool it would be to be the first one in my immediate family to go to college and actually use my degree. My mom and uncle both went to some form of college but they never even ended up using their degrees all that much so thanks for the video college is back on the table.
That’s wonderful. Also, you don’t have to make good grades to be smart. You can’t judge a fish by how well it climbs a tree. Find what you’re good at and care about and don’t worry about anyone else. There are ways to turn anything into a career. College may be right for you and it may not. But your success will be determined by your mindset and it seems like you’ve got a winning one. If you are an American student...every student has the right to apply for a PELL GRANT. It's different than student loans and you don't have to pay it back. Everyone who would be considered financially unable to pay for their own education usually qualifies. By the time you graduate, it's unlikely you will be considered wealthy enough to pay for your own education. Community colleges are a good way to get your AA out of the way because the tuition is cheaper. If it's all paid through Pell Grants only, it's basically free and you are allotted 600% to use up on education. That is 2 years worth of community college...the time it takes to complete your AA degree. Harvard University even accepts financial aid. You just have to have high enough grades and a great academic resume to get accepted. The point is... education at a cost effective level is out there. Nobody talks about it. Research. Take control of your own future. 🏆.
Also... Some highschools have college transfer programs now. It starts when you are in highschool so you take both highschool and college course simultaneously...so when you graduate you have both a highschool degree AND your Associates. Then when you start your college path, you apply for a Pell Grant, use your AA credits to enroll in a Bachelor's program. Because you already have an AA, it requires less time to complete... like regular Bachelor's Program. It's half the time. You will have a degree in 2 years...fully paid for. GOOD LUCK! 👨🎓🎓👩🎓. Do not pass an opportunity to get an education up. Even if you are smart enough to be a billionaire without one, an education you can't fake and is always essential. The only country who tells its populous it's not important is America...and we rank low in everything, globally, ESPECIALLY the illiteracy rate. So that should make you think. 🗞️📝📚.

Great info. My daughter has gotten into every school that she has applied to, but we're finding that those merit scholarships were few and far between, even though she is a top student. We definitely need some scholarships to put college within reach. I am still paying off student loans so more loans is not an option.
I can’t believe this is where we are as a country and a society. That someone super bright and capable has to wrestle with the thought of overwhelming debt or not being able to get an education. I’m sorry. Unfortunately scholarships and grants are sometimes the best ways to pay for it other than loans. Working for an employer who has good tuition reimbursement helps too. I just spoke with someone from Verizon who said they changed jobs to work for them because their tuition benefits were better than their previous employer.

I’m turning 21 in two months and I took 2 gap years once I graduated back in 2020 once I found out I had to pay for college out of pocket! I didn’t qualify for financial aid and I didn’t take time to write a college essay or take a SAT! I’ve always loved school growing up and dreamed of going to college and some day culinary school but it’s just hard carrying out my dreams when I have to cough up $900+ per credit. I feel as if I’m never going to finish school if I carry on this way and I’ll be in major debt! I’m thankful that I stumbled across this video and I’m hoping that I can find a few scholarships that applies to me.

My husband and I are in our 30’s and beginning to research what we need to do to get him back in school to earn his bachelor’s, he went to cc college and got a couple associates degrees. Now looking to finish out a bachelors online. I was discouraged by how spammy the “scholarships” look from google searching. Wondering if you have any advice for an adult learner going back to school?
First, let me say I can totally sympathize with your situation because my wife and I were right there only a couple years ago. We had looked into a career path and the necessary degrees and it looked like we were going to have to come up with around $70,000 in order to finish a bachelors program and a masters. It was super discouraging. However, at that time we heard about a program by a woman named Tracy Timm. My wife took her course and we discovered that the whole career path we were about to set out on wasn’t going to be a good fit for my wife anyways. Through that course my wife was able to identify a career path that didn’t even require additional schooling. I don’t think a lot of people are aware of how important it is to protect your personal information online. It’s hard to stop the ads and spam once they start. I totally get you on this.
I am 23 years old, studying general medicine, but I really like to study another field after medicine, specifically I want to study engineering, would I find a scholarship after I finish my studies in medicine? Would there be a barrier to winning a scholarship because I was studying medicine? Or that would be an advantage?
The fact that you are currently studying medicine wouldn’t be a barrier to winning a scholarship for engineering. If you plan to study engineering at the same institution where you are studying medicine, I would go to the engineering department and ask if they have any available scholarships. If you are going to a different university, you can see if your new school offers any scholarships or financial aid to transfer students. If you are changing fields of study from medicine to engineering, you won’t be able to apply for scholarships in medicine anymore because those are for students who plan to study medicine going forward. So you will start seeking out specifically engineering scholarships. But don’t limit your scholarship search to strictly engineering or even exclusively at your college. Search at private businesses and non profit organizations too. You never know what you can find until you start looking and asking. Good luck and stay empowered!
The scholarships are included for the year indicated, but most scholarships that are offered one year are offered again the next. There doesn’t seem to be a huge difference from year to year since most of the scholarships in the 2021 are also in the 2022. It’s possible you may get a few more in each new edition, so you may as well get the latest edition. But you aren’t going to find a significantly different selection either way.
My daughter is graduating today from Highland High School in Highland Arkansas. The school counselor did not help my daughter she got a $1000 scholarship, she’s also been in the band since sixth grade. 1 counselor and she found a 1, 000 dollar scholarship. Great question! Absolutely not. While I would say the majority of scholarships are aimed at graduating high school students, there are many available to students currently in college and even adults who took some time off and are going back to school. A Google search can be a good place to start, specifically searching for your situation. Search examples could be “scholarships for stay at home mom returning to college” or “scholarships for older adults” or “scholarships for non-traditional students” It’s also possible the college you plan to attend may have financial aid or grants available to non-traditional students. Of course, the elephant in the room is “do you need to go back to college to accomplish your goal?” What is it you’re trying to accomplish by goin back to school? Some times there a jobs available doing what you may want that don’t require a degree. Sometimes that’s not possible, but before potentially spending thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on a degree, make sure you absolutely need it first.
Can scholarships be used for sorority housing? how about a car (if transportation is needed for school? what are the guidelines for how scholarship money can be used.
That is a great question. The answer is, it depends. Each scholarships will have its own rules for how the money can be spent. Those rules typically fall into certain categories. Some scholarships are for tuition and fees only. Some scholarships can be for tuition and fees and other educational expenses (like books or maybe room and board) and some have no restrictions at all and could be used for whatever a student wants. Transportation can be an option for some scholarships, so paying for a car or gas or public transportation. When you win a scholarship you want to clarify by asking or reading the fine print what restriction may exist on how that scholarship can be used.

FAFSA is almost never enough, even for people who qualify for higher amounts of financial aid. That’s why the FAFSA almost always includes federal student loans. They already know they aren’t going to be offering enough aid for most people to pay for college without the loans. I encourage everyone to be constantly applying for scholarships all year long. Obviously I can’t guarantee you will win, but there are countless scholarships available all year long and many go unawarded because no one applied. So stick with scholarship applications every single month. In the event that this strategy still doesn’t lend you any scholarship wins, you may be in a position to rethink college entirely. Look at community college first since it’s cheaper to get started. Or consider jobs that don’t require college at companies that offer tuition reimbursement programs for their employees. Then you can be earning a paycheck while getting someone else to pay for college for you. And there is always the military. I’m not a vet myself, but I work with many people who are and I rarely encounter folks who regret that decision, but I know that’s not 100% true for everyone, and the military won’t be a great fit for everyone. But definitely keep it on the list for consideration if you’re having trouble finding any other path to college. And finally, there are jobs that pay quite well that don’t actually require a bachelors degree. There are the obvious trades like plumbing and electrician, but they are also union jobs for railroads and other industries that pay very well with positions that don’t require college. Don’t be discouraged. Whatever path you choose, you can be a success. But I would highly recommend choosing a path that doesn’t require student loans, or at least minimizes the need for them drastically. (Entrepreneurship is also an option if you’re motivated and interested in starting a business or working for yourself. That doesn’t require a college degree either)
Avoid student loans as best you can. You will be in such a better situation financially if you do. No matter what job you pursue, starting with zero debt is better than starting with $100,000 of debt.

You should start applying for scholarships this year. While there may not be as many, there are scholarships that sophomores can apply for. Google search “scholarships for high school sophomores” and see what options you have.
That is a great question. From all I could find, it seems you would need to have a separate membership for each student who is applying for scholarships. Each membership is tied to its own profile that they use to match scholarships. They wouldn’t be able to do that for more than on person. It would start to look like when people share a Netflix account. The suggestions start to get pretty poor.
I’m a 4th year architecture student in a 5 year program (B Arch Program). Do you know of any reliable websites for scholarships in the architecture field ?
I am not aware of any scholarship websites that are specifically for architecture. I would typically suggest looking into what your college has to offer for a specific department. I also post a monthly video highlighting scholarships due each month that tend to have broad eligibility requirements. You can always check those out each month and apply.
Great question. It’s not too late. However there will be a limit to how much of an impact you can make. GPA is indeed an average so you can’t eliminate the early grades, but if you can get grades higher than your current GPA, they will make the average higher. So for instance, if your GPA is a 3.0, any A that brings in a 4.0 will increase the GPA. Getting a B won’t make a different since it will add another 3.0 to the average that is already a 3.0. And a C that adds in a 2.0 will decrease the GPA. So every additional class and grade can effect the GPA. And schools often have their own ways of calculating GPA where an AP or IB class is weighted more and a remedial class is weighted less. You’ll have to talk to your school counselor for the details on that, but again, it’s not too late!

I would start with the financial aid office and see if they already know any department specific scholarships or grants available. Since each college and university is unique, I don’t have any specific process that would work for each school, but if you’re going to go through the process of finding them for your school, it would be awesome if you put the information you gathered together and made it available for students at your school! If you’re going to do the work anyways, why not help others in the process right? Either way, I wish there was an easier way to find them. I know it certainly would have saved me a bunch of money if I knew about them when I was in school. Best of luck!
There are many scholarship search engines that are free to use. I wouldn’t pay for a scholarship search engine unless I had used the free ones and found they were not suitable for my needs. Many will have a plethora of scholarships that will apply to you. Some of the big ones are Unigo or scholarships.com

It depends on what you’re comparing it to. It’s better to apply Senior year than to wait until you’re in college. But I wouldn’t wait until senior year if you are younger. There will definitely be more scholarships available for you senior year, but you can start applying for scholarships as early as middle school in some cases. It all depends on the eligibility requirements. I’ve seen some scholarships open to students as young as 11. So don’t wait. Start today!
It depends on the scholarship. Some scholarships will be sent directly to your college to be applied to your account for tuition and other related expenses. Other scholarships will be mailed to you as a check, but the check is made out to the school. Other scholarships will send a check made out directly to you. Great question. Keep em coming.

My wife took her course and we discovered that the whole career path we were about to set out on wasn’t going to be a good fit for my wife anyways. Would there be a barrier to winning a scholarship because I was studying medicine? Or that would be an advantage?
The fact that you are currently studying medicine wouldn’t be a barrier to winning a scholarship for engineering. If you plan to study engineering at the same institution where you are studying medicine, I would go to the engineering department and ask if they have any available scholarships.
If you are going to a different university, you can see if your new school offers any scholarships or financial aid to transfer students.
If you are changing fields of study from medicine to engineering, you won’t be able to apply for scholarships in medicine anymore because those are for students who plan to study medicine going forward. So you will start seeking out specifically engineering scholarships.
But don’t limit your scholarship search to strictly engineering or even exclusively at your college. Search at private businesses and non profit organizations too. You never know what you can find until you start looking and asking.

The scholarships are included for the year indicated, but most scholarships that are offered one year are offered again the next.
There doesn’t seem to be a huge difference from year to year since most of the scholarships in the 2021 are also in the 2022. It’s possible you may get a few more in each new edition, so you may as well get the latest edition. But you aren’t going to find a significantly different selection either way.

Great question! Absolutely not. While I would say the majority of scholarships are aimed at graduating high school students, there are many available to students currently in college and even adults who took some time off and are going back to school.
A Google search can be a good place to start, specifically searching for your situation. Search examples could be “scholarships for stay at home mom returning to college” or “scholarships for older adults” or “scholarships for non-traditional students”
It’s also possible the college you plan to attend may have financial aid or grants available to non-traditional students.
Of course, the elephant in the room is “do you need to go back to college to accomplish your goal?” What is it you’re trying to accomplish by goin back to school? Some times there a jobs available doing what you may want that don’t require a degree. Sometimes that’s not possible, but before potentially spending thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on a degree, make sure you absolutely need it first.

That is a great question. The answer is, it depends. Each scholarships will have its own rules for how the money can be spent. Those rules typically fall into certain categories.
Some scholarships are for tuition and fees only. Some scholarships can be for tuition and fees and other educational expenses (like books or maybe room and board) and some have no restrictions at all and could be used for whatever a student wants.
Transportation can be an option for some scholarships, so paying for a car or gas or public transportation.
When you win a scholarship you want to clarify by asking or reading the fine print what restriction may exist on how that scholarship can be used.

FAFSA is almost never enough, even for people who qualify for higher amounts of financial aid. That’s why the FAFSA almost always includes federal student loans. They already know they aren’t going to be offering enough aid for most people to pay for college without the loans.
I encourage everyone to be constantly applying for scholarships all year long. Obviously I can’t guarantee you will win, but there are countless scholarships available all year long and many go unawarded because no one applied. So stick with scholarship applications every single month.
In the event that this strategy still doesn’t lend you any scholarship wins, you may be in a position to rethink college entirely. Look at community college first since it’s cheaper to get started. Or consider jobs that don’t require college at companies that offer tuition reimbursement programs for their employees. Then you can be earning a paycheck while getting someone else to pay for college for you.
And there is always the military. I’m not a vet myself, but I work with many people who are and I rarely encounter folks who regret that decision, but I know that’s not 100% true for everyone, and the military won’t be a great fit for everyone. But definitely keep it on the list for consideration if you’re having trouble finding any other path to college.
And finally, there are jobs that pay quite well that don’t actually require a bachelors degree. There are the obvious trades like plumbing and electrician, but they are also union jobs for railroads and other industries that pay very well with positions that don’t require college.
Don’t be discouraged. Whatever path you choose, you can be a success. But I would highly recommend choosing a path that doesn’t require student loans, or at least minimizes the need for them drastically.
(Entrepreneurship is also an option if you’re motivated and interested in starting a business or working for yourself. That doesn’t require a college degree either)
Avoid student loans as best you can. You will be in such a better situation financially if you do. No matter what job you pursue, starting with zero debt is better than starting with $100,000 of debt.

You should start applying for scholarships this year. While there may not be as many, there are scholarships that sophomores can apply for. Google search “scholarships for high school sophomores” and see what options you have.
For scholly, can you it for more than 1 student in a household?
That is a great question. From all I could find, it seems you would need to have a separate membership for each student who is applying for scholarships. Each membership is tied to its own profile that they use to match scholarships. They wouldn’t be able to do that for more than on person. It would start to look like when people share a Netflix account. The suggestions start to get pretty poor.

I am not aware of any scholarship websites that are specifically for architecture. I would typically suggest looking into what your college has to offer for a specific department.
I also post a monthly video highlighting scholarships due each month that tend to have broad eligibility requirements. You can always check those out each month and apply.

However, Architecture is officially recognized as a STEM subject as of 2019 so you will qualify for any scholarships for a STEM major.

Great question. It’s not too late. However there will be a limit to how much of an impact you can make. GPA is indeed an average so you can’t eliminate the early grades, but if you can get grades higher than your current GPA, they will make the average higher.
So for instance, if your GPA is a 3.0, any A that brings in a 4.0 will increase the GPA. Getting a B won’t make a different since it will add another 3.0 to the average that is already a 3.0. And a C that adds in a 2.0 will decrease the GPA. So every additional class and grade can effect the GPA.
And schools often have their own ways of calculating GPA where an AP or IB class is weighted more and a remedial class is weighted less. You’ll have to talk to your school counselor for the details on that, but again, it’s not too late!

Many scholarships that are available for undergraduate students are also eligible for master’s degree students. Is there an easy way to search for department scholarships or do you have to call each department?
I would start with the financial aid office and see if they already know any department specific scholarships or grants available.
Since each college and university is unique, I don’t have any specific process that would work for each school, but if you’re going to go through the process of finding them for your school, it would be awesome if you put the information you gathered together and made it available for students at your school!
If you’re going to do the work anyways, why not help others in the process right?

There are many scholarship search engines that are free to use. I wouldn’t pay for a scholarship search engine unless I had used the free ones and found they were not suitable for my needs. Many will have a plethora of scholarships that will apply to you.

It depends on what you’re comparing it to. It’s better to apply Senior year than to wait until you’re in college. But I wouldn’t wait until senior year if you are younger.
There will definitely be more scholarships available for you senior year, but you can start applying for scholarships as early as middle school in some cases. It all depends on the eligibility requirements. I’ve seen some scholarships open to students as young as 11. So don’t wait. Start today!

It depends on the scholarship. Some scholarships will be sent directly to your college to be applied to your account for tuition and other related expenses. Other scholarships will be mailed to you as a check, but the check is made out to the school. Other scholarships will send a check made out directly to you.
