I own a Type S advance. Never thought I’d be an Acura person but after test driving and owning one I can say Acura is top of the line. Infotainment is easy to get used to and I’d argue easier to use while driving vs a touchscreen. Beautiful cars in person and to people who say 5.5 0-60 is slow, I challenge you to test drive one of these and step on it. It pulls hard and gives you all the speed you’d want. Easily gaps most people on the road lol
Just got mine last weekend, SV. Tiger's eye on Orchid. My local dealer tried to lease me a base, found one with the Advance package in nearby AZ for the same price. Love it. 👍
Touch pad is very easy to use. I've found reviewers tend to have no clue how to use the touch pad. - The only thing you need to know about the touch pad is to never lift your finger off the pad when wanting to selecting an icon.. instead, keep your finger always on the pad, and simply "press down" on the pad to select an on-screen item instead of lifting your finger and pressing. I have a 2024 MDX Type-S Ultra (Advanced trim in the USA) - and I love it.
Got a type s advance 3 days ago and have only driven it from the dealer to my garage I got use to the touchpad in just that one drive. People tend to exaggerate on the inconvenience. Also, it was during a thunderstorm.
I actually own a 22 MDX A Spec... YOU DO GET USED TO THE INTERFACE QUICKLY! It was my main concern as well... now I LOVE IT! I actually hate the touchscreen in my wife's X3... you have to reach for it... AND you take your eyes off the road a lot more than in my MDX... that said... the MDX is not perfect... the gas mileage is not so good... the back up camera if it even sprinkles out is basically unusable... and Alexa never works! But the worst part is the piano black...just really hard to keep clean! All in all the BEST SUV I've ever owned... it handles well... and has a ton of room...and Acura service is AWESOME!!!
I had a 2010 Lexus RX 350. It had both touch pad & touch screen. I got used to the touch pad, but would have preferred using voice recognition. Alas, it was horrible. E.g. "Phone, call Mom. Did you say call Tom? NO. Did you say call home?" No. Then it gives you a list of totally random numbers. That shocked me for a Lexus. Then I bought a 2014 Lincoln Mkx. Not only was the voice recognition much better, it also covered the climate. You could change fan speed and temperature. It was designed by a woman-lead group--no surprise here. Now I've got a 2018 Nissan Ultima with all touch screen. It's voice recognition isn't as good as the MKX, but not as bad as the RX was. Hopefully the Acura is better.
I totally agree , I don't have to change position at all when I go through my infotainment system while I drive my MDX-S. It takes a minute to figure it out and get used to. The touchpad is safer in my opinion than leaning and reaching all the way up there. The hate for it is overrated and is mainly complained about by short term users.
Just bought a Type S and incredibly pleased with the purchase. The fit and finish looks amazing and ride is solid and quiet. Choose it over a BMW X5 because for everything the Acura had it was 15k more for the bmw with less reliability and more expensive in the long run for maintenance. I must say the X5 does have better driving dynamics, gas mileage and horsepower. Have already owned a 2019 RDX Aspec so was used to the one to one touchpad. Love the massaging seats and the sound system is incredible. On par with the Bowers & Wilkins sound system in the Volvo. Will enjoy for many years to come.
Awsome review!!! I hope Acura will bring the infotainment closer, so I can be a touchscreen. Still keep the track pad, hopefully the refresh or when the redesign comes.
The badges are that big to amplify the radar signal. They set it further back in the bay that way a small fender-bender doesn't turn into a more expensive and complicated fix.
I actually prefer the True Touch over the touchscreen. Once you get used to it it's a breeze to use. No more reaching for the screen and hunting for what I want to touch. Also no more fingerprints on my screen. It's different and takes some getting used to. I will attest that it's not great with Android Auto or Car Play because it works like a mouse pad.
There is so much to like about this MDX. I agree 100% the infotainment interface is very annoying. I have a 2019 Pilot Elite. It has a straightforward touch screen. I am looking forward to the 2023 Pilot. Looks somewhat similar to the MDX. It will have MDX underpinnings, 10 speed auto, AWD similar to SH-AWD, and it looks to have a very straight forward info interface. It won’t go like a Type S MDX, but I can live with less power and regular grade gas.
I would get the MDX Type-S ASAP if it had the Sport Hybrid powertrain from the 17-20 MDX. That would put the hp/tq +420, 7DCT, close to 5 second 0-60 mph times, mpgs always in the 21-24 range, and improve the handling with true tq vectoring+regen braking. The Sport Hybrid option was only $1500 more than a similar MDX tech or Adv. It would probably be cheaper because it included electronic dampers and Sport+ mode for the 17-20 MDXs (I think all Type-S comes already with electronic dampers and/or air suspension). Even the RLX Sport Hybrid powertrain would be an good option in the Type-S. The RLX hybrid had a NA 310hp 3.5L V-6, 377hp/341tq hybrid powertrain, 4.8 to 4.9 0-60 times, and 28-30 mpgs always.
If you want better tech then go with the Lexus 500h, better mpg too. Let’s face it the mdx can’t compete with the likes of BMW and Audi at this price point and the tech is pretty outdated. Still not touchscreen or usb-c connectors. The new RX 500h has way better tech but of course you don’t get the same driving performance as the type s

As always, excellent review. One thing I thought of was where it is manufactured. It is built in Ohio. Most if not all of the competitors are NOT built in the USA. This is a deal MAKER for this vehicle. I am buying one right after the holidays. Thanks for the review. Maybe add a comment in writing on the video...it can be done. I think this is very important. Obviously, Honda/Acura gave people too much credit with the infotainment interface. Just touch the corresponding spot on the pad to the icon on the screen, and quit trying to swipe. Or use voice mode if that's too hard for ya.
This color could be the determining factor that makes me purchase it. If i can get Panoramic Moonroof and a Speaker sound package if not then I will pass.
