  • This video shows how to build a heavy duty grate / cooking grid for a BBQ grill. This is a small welding project that is easy to do and extremely useful. All materials cost less than $30. The materials include: 3/4" angle iron and 3/8" hot roll rod. This grill costs a fraction of the price of buying a new one, and is significantly more durable. Enjoy making your own!

    one thing about seasoning raw steel. you really want to scrub the heck out of it with dish soap and a coarse scotchbrite. then, heat it on the grill to smoking hot. let it cool most of the way and THEN smother it in crisco and reheat it. after it cools down, wipe it down with a dry rag and reapply crisco. and go through another heat cycle. not only will it make your grill more "anti-stick", but it really does a good job of eliminating the steel manufacturers oils and so on

    Great job of showing each step clearly. And yep, using extra pieces of the same stock you're installing works on many projects, just like you used the 3/8" cold roll stock on this one. 😁

    Nice. It seems obvious, but your spacing hack really impressed me. I have made maybe 30 grills in my life and this just never occured to me!😏

    That is an outstanding video. Clear and concise. Just what I was looking for. Can I use a flux core welder for this project?

    I like welding and DYI, but got damn the price of steel is ridiculous to the point it costs more to fabricate than it is to buy commercial made products. Well, nothing beats customs builds though. Looks like a great and simple design you came up with. Good job, and thanks for sharing your step by step video.

      Yes indeed, everything is so expensive now. It's almost cheaper to buy Chinese made everything.

    • @PhilCrockett
      @PhilCrockett  3 роки тому +1

      I did this for about $30. The rod is super cheap. However, steel prices vary depending on where you go, so shop around for sure. there was 2 steel businesses in my town about 10 years ago that priced 30% different when comparing. could be the one was selling China steel and the other one was US steel.
