We all love black cats! The gene that produces melanistic leopards is recessive; the gene that produces melanistic jaguars is dominant.

That's a great observation! While black panthers are often called black cats, they're actually leopards or jaguars with a specific genetic trait. Thanks

I think something is wrong w-youtube -- I replied to your reply but it isn't here. It may be because I put in a link - shoot - that's darn annoying. I said quite a bit but all I remember is mentioning about some people in Russia who have a black leopard?/jaguar? but call it a panther that plays w-their dog & snuggles w-a woman but I don't know what kind of facility they have; I also said that Big Cat Rescue did a video on the "black panther" issue (that was the link I supplied that youtube doesn't seem to like) & Kevin Richardson (the lion whisperer) also talked briefly about the "panther issue." There's just so much mixed info, & also some people who don't seem to care -- there is a video I watched on the care of 2 cheetahs & for some stupid reason the narrator kept calling them leopards. When I commented about it, someone replied to me, "Who cares, it's just an animal." Thx so much for your response.

Carolhayar3037 -Yes, I watch their videos from time to time on UA-cam...Luna the Panther. 😊👍🏽 She's a gorgeous black leopard.🥰🤗💝 Their dog Svenza a Rottweiler romps and plays with Luna.🥰😊 Their mom does all the narration in Russian so you have to put subtitles on to translate her narration into English or whatever language you speak.😊👍🏽
Yeah, you have to be vigilant on some of these animal videos, most of the vids have bots reading info. so they wouldn't know a cheetah from a leopard anyway. Half the time they don't even use the right human phraseology when reading sentences, and they mispronounce words to boot.🤔😖🤨

The black panther in Russia is specifically in Siberia. Her name is *_Luna_* (UA-cam channel is "Luna the panthera.") Luna is about 5 years old currently, and is basically a 90 lb. house-cat. She was rejected by her feline mother, and therefore raised by humans - Victoria and husband Vladamir. Luna loves her human mom, but absolutely ADORES he human dad. Her best friend is a Rottweiler named *Venza.* Venza was about 5 years old when they acquired Luna. They post videos 3-4 times each week. I hope you all fall in love with Luna (and Venza) as 4.3 million subscribers globally have.
You can learn Luna's story on their UA-cam home page.

@@mikejones8866 Black panther, a colloquial term used to refer to large felines classified in the genus Panthera are characterized by a coat of black fur or large concentrations of black spots set against a dark background. The term black panther is frequently applied to black-coated leopards (Panthera pardus) of Africa & Asia, and jaguars (Panthera onca) of Central & South America. Black-furred variants of these species are also called black leopards and black jaguars. Some of the various cats of the Russia-Siberia areas are the Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis), Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica, formerly known as the Siberian tiger), Eurasian lynx, Pallas’s cat, Altai snow leopard (Russian snow leopards), & the small Leopard cat. Big cats such as lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars do not NATURALLY occur in Siberia, a region characterized by its cold and harsh climate. Black leopards are found NATURALLY in Africa and Asia, and black jaguars are found NATURALLY in South America. While there are big cats such as leopards, jaguars, snow leopards, mountain lions (also called pumas), there is no big cat such as a panther in & of itself. “Panther” is a broad term incorrectly used to describe MELANISTIC leopards & jaguars. Thanks.

To begin with, you should not have used the words "...Black Panther" in the title of the video -- & should not have used the word "panther(s)" continually throughout the narration. The narration once again says, "Black panthers, being melanistic leopards or jaguars share the same diet as their non-melanistic counterpart..." Millions of people do NOT understand all of this melanistic/non-melanistic talk & have no idea of what is the truth. There is enough confusion & misinformation about this issue & when people use the words black panther people believe there is such a thing as a black panther. WHY NOT JUST REFER TO THEM AS A BLACK JAGUAR or a BLACK LEOPARD?? WHY EVEN REFER TO THEM AS PANTHER IN THE FIRST PLACE?? A panther is a species of cat which is also called a mountain lion, a cougar & a puma & there is no such thing as that cat being black; they are brown, & they blend in with their prey. They are not black. While black is the melanistic form of a leopard or jaguar which causes the black coloration, they are leopards or jaguars. They are not black panthers. The narrator goes on to say "Children learn about the importance of black panther conservation..." Here again the use of calling this cat a panther. The constant use of the word panther is grossly inaccurate & only causing more misinformation & confusion. The children will NOT know the truth that these animals are black leopards & black jaguars -- the words black panther has to be omitted from our language if kids are to know what's real & what isn't.

      Hi carolhayar3037,
Thanks for your feedback on the video! You're absolutely right about the importance of accurate information, especially when it comes to educating young audiences.
Spot on about melanism: We agree that referring to black panthers as black leopards or black jaguars is more precise.
"Panther" can be tricky: While "panther" is often used for black panthers, it can also be a broader term for big cats like leopards and jaguars. We can clarify this point in the narration to avoid confusion.
Pumas and panthers: You're correct that pumas (cougars, mountain lions) are not panthers. We'll double-check the video to ensure this distinction is clear.
We're always striving to improve the accuracy of our content. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention, and we'll make sure the video reflects the best scientific understanding.

@@Futuretech.408 There's always been confusion & misinformation about this. Big Cat Rescue has a video on this but to be perfectly honest, I didn't watch all of it -- it's at ua-cam.com/video/6przuR7ITfY/v-deo.html if you're interested; Kevin Richardson (the lion whisperer) mentioned it also but I don't have the link. There is a channel from Russia that focuses on a black leopard?/jaguar? but always calls it a panther. It plays w-their dog, snuggles w-the woman but I'm not sure what their facility or setup is for the cat. It would be nice if they referred to it as the leopard or jaguar that it is. Lot of confusion & unfortunately there are people who don't seem to care very much because when I commented on a video I once saw about a cheetah which was referred to as a leopard, someone said, "Who cares, it's just an animal." Thx so much for your response.

Another bs video. You can't do generalities as there are two different species involved. These are leopards OR jaguars, it doesn't matter if they are black or not. Panther is a generic term that does NOT define a particular species.

@@Futuretech.408 what annoys me it is that you are making too many generalities about "black panthers". Those are clearly two different species and it is always better to call them by their correct names. The fact they are being "black" or not absolutely doesn't matter.
