@@valentinberg7 People tend to forget that the USSR couldn't and wouldn't have won the 'great patriotic war' against Germany without the help from Britain and the USA. Simple fact is that the USSR's economy and industry would have collapsed before '42/'43 without the humongous financial and material aid they received through the lend/lease act. Most visibly, the United States provided the Soviet Union with more than 400,000 jeeps and trucks, 14,000 aircraft, 8,000 tractors and construction vehicles, and 13,000 battle tanks.
However, the real significance of Lend-Lease for the Soviet war effort was that it covered the "sensitive points" of Soviet production -- gasoline, explosives, aluminum, nonferrous metals, radio communications, and so on, says historian Boris Sokolov.
      Khrushchev said in his memoirs:
"If the United States had not helped us, we would not have won the war," he wrote in his memoirs. "One-on-one against Hitler's Germany, we would not have withstood its onslaught and would have lost the war. No one talks about this officially, and Stalin never, I think, left any written traces of his opinion, but I can say that he expressed this view several times in conversations with me."
."In a hypothetical battle one-on-one between the U.S.S.R and Germany, without the help of Lend-Lease and without the diversion of significant forces of the Luftwaffe and the German Navy and the diversion of more than one-quarter of its land forces in the fight against Britain and the United States, Stalin could hardly have beaten Hitler," Sokolov wrote in an essay for RFE/RL's Russian Service.

      @@axeldewater9491 "So they wouldn't surrender"
Well, the fact that the Germans took around 5.7 million Soviet prisoners during the war, so I wouldn't exactly say 'they wouldn't surrender'.
Besides this, the argument was about the fact that the USSR couldn't have won without the help from the USA and UK and vice versa. It took all 3 of them to finally defeat Germany and it still took them 4 years to do so.

    • @evanrogers1825

Axel de Water What are you talking about? Germany was bombing London, playing with the possibility of invasion, and replacing King George with his brother, King Edward as the proxy king of a vassal state. Germany was not interested in stopping at France. Though it was far off, if everything went well for the Germans, invasion of the Industrial powerhouse that was the United States was almost a certainty.
The Russians had a lot to lose sure; it’s not a competition though. Everyone had stakes in the war.

The people who've posted comments about the "awkward" presence of Ms Merkel at the parade are missing the point: this event didn't just celebrate the Allied victory over the Nazis, but the peace that emerged from the conflict --- a peace that included Germany as one of the chief defenders of democracy in the world. It could be described as a "world unity" event. I, for one, was heartened to see these many countries --- onetime friends, onetime foes --- come together like this. It kind of brings a tear to the eye and a sense of hope for the future.

No problem from the Russian point of view. Russians as a people feel closer to Germans than the English and USA.
For the average Russian the presence of USA Troops would be harder to handle than that of Germans.
Understandable. Those two nations have never paid due respect to the Russian people for the sacrifices they made and the losses they suffered.
      Germany though understands.
In terms of Culture Russians share much more than the UK and USA.
After all it is a very spiritual day for Russians. A day of celebration and remembrance and honouring those who fought.
The Parade in Red Square is impressive enough but the Millions of people that gather in the Streets all over Russia and have a Parade carrying Photos of those lost and who fought is truly impressive. All remembering and honoring those that fought. Putin and Russian Politicians walk with them. That must worry his Security people.

Not to mention the allies did most of the fighting in the Pacific and North Africa meanwhile the Soviets didn't declare war against Japan until the very last month.
Arguably the US did contributed the most by supplying the UK, kicking the Nazis out of North Africa and Italy, Liberating Europe, Destroying the Imperial Navy, sending aid to the Chinese, island hopping, and finally the surrender and occupation of Japan.

As a Russian I can confirm that me personally, to this day (may 2023), would not be against American troops coming to march again on the Red Square to celebrate the Victory Day, but only if the reason they are coming would be a Victory celebrations, and not any sort of provocations.
I think a lot of people would not be against that. We have to be consistent, if we're saying that Victory Day is about people that were victorious, veterans, labour veterans and all the people affected by that war, and not about the current thing, or current political situation, we need to be welcome to all the allied nations on the parade. And I think this wouldn't be a problem (not from the Russian authorities at least) if American or British troops would like to come, but I don't think that American or British authorities would allow this to happen, and also I don't think that a reversed situation is possible to happen. I don't believe that American authorities would ever allow Russian troops to march in Washington D.C. to celebrate WW2 Victory, nor they ever would allow this in the past years.
And that's the difference between us. Hopefully these differences will be solved in the future.

    • @sqnhunter

Maybe so...but what you haven't addressed is the lie the Russian Victory day purports, and the accusations it paints on not just your allies... your saviors...no one appreciates how you look down on the west...you people of Slav origin need to recognize exactly where you came from and why you think it is ok to lie and look down upon others for their sacrifices and good will, just so you can pretend you are better than the 5th world country your leadership has dragged you down too. Putin paints himself as a messiah today...forgetting how much money and aid the US and Europe poured into Russia to help your people after the fall of the communist regime. Instead...he took that money and built a military with design on world dominance. Tell me again why we should believe anything from Russian mouths! In a more humble way of course if you truly believe any of what you first wrote.

@Technical Support 26

It always seems everywhere WWII vets always talk about coming together as a whole world to fight for peace while all the vets after that era all get on the "My country did the most!" wagon

Well four years of fighting and 27 million people lost from SU side. Barbarossa plan was the largest invasion in human history so I think it’s fair to say that Soviet Union’s role in the victory was the largest. But allies have done a lot also no doubts. Any human life is priceless.

@@albertdubrovsky9545 The soviets did a good deal. But they were also backed by the US pumping supplies into them when they were at their lowest. And honestly millions of those people didn't have to die. Stalin being Stalin set the fates of millions to have to die with the purges in military leadership to leave the Russian army kinda lost and refusing to let people evacuate. Their victory is always going to be kinda tainted by the people that didn't need to die
To be fair though I am sort of biased in my views. Being third gen Pole, I don't exactly view Stalin or the Russians in the best light given all the effort they expended to try and destroy Poland

Please keep the incompetent, ignorant comments to yourselves. Grow up. It was a great pleasure being invited to the parade. And let the old WWII Vet say what he wants. Russians take a very very great pride in this day. Who are you to speak badly about them, or it. By us taking part in that parade, and the mark we left on the soldiers there, will greatly help relations between them and us. One day you may just be thankful for it.

@@saigon68foxtrot83 The Russians have a great sense of real history. That is why the invited American and British troops to march over their central square in Moscow to commemorate a great alliance. In America this seems to have been forgotten and replaced by some Hollywood made propaganda.
