Seth, clever use of humor to keep interest....I am learning who you are and find you fascinating! Thank you!
His whole idea is there there are individuals who are leading those movements and allowing people to connect. Those people are necessary for tribes. Many times a large number of people share a common belief but none of them have the courage to act on it. When someone does, those who agree support that individual and a movement begins. The point of the individual, the leader, is to connect people with similar beliefs, who would otherwise be unheard toward a common goal.

The problem with this talk is that very few people know which fights to pick, which status quo to change, which rule to break.
That's why few people execute ideas given to them in any manner right?
Just pick the one that resonates with you. What makes you frustrated and angry? That is where you will find it

To be able to build a tribe of followers who are inspired by our ideas and actions is very powerful. This is because we can see how connective we are to the needs of others, which in in turn helps determine a constructive path for leading a movement. I believe the core message to inspire others needs to be ecological in nature, meaning it aims creates positive fulfilling outcomes, which are not detrimental to the wellbeing of others or environment. Movement is created through connective meaning

I'm not sure of every instance, but certainly this a good summary warning.
Completely agree with you there, small self-organizing groups are the definition of tribes... to me the problem is that in the West there is some complex in believing some are just "Leaders" and others aren't. The best groups are composed of people who lead themselves and follow the best ideas - each for themselves defining what a good idea is.

As a former volunteer firefighter, that is indeed true, we take pics on control burns, sometimes even INSIDE (if it's not too hot). However, those are the ONLY ONES ALLOWED. If you snap a pic on a working structure fire you are in for MASSIVE ridicule and possible termination (if your dept isn't severely understaffed) and rightly-so. That was funny.
Great video! I wanna add that forums are can help you build a passionate audience around your brand. And creating one is super easy these days, so no excuse not to have one.
Exactly.. I did plan to add a forum on a blog I am working on, and this video just gave me few more insights why and how to do it.

Keeping in mind I am saying this whole-heartedly as a TED and TEDed subscriber - in its own way TED is the ruling class getting together to discuss how in actuality they really aren't so bad. Am I the only one sitting here thinking this? He talks about how tribes and belonging matter... then skips straight to how that, to his current audience, is useful to move products and spread their ideas.

Conflict is acceptable if we want to communicate, of course people will have different ideas. Should we quit thinking altogether to avoid conflict?

That the point though isn't it? Being vulnerable, and accepting that fact that rejection is a possibility. Yes tribalism can be dangerous and has led to major world conflicts and devastating tragedies (genocides etc), but it has also led to many good things. If Dr. King didn't stand up and lead a movement that was desperately sought by countless people, nothing would have changed. If people like Lincoln, Mandela, Ghandi didn't challenge the status quo the world as we know it would be different.

More optimism, by all means, yes! But Seth's recipe for tribes is a double-edged sword. Depending on how you view the world and whether a tribe is good or bad, he just described the perfect recipe for bringing QAnon and the like into the world. And I guess also Koresh, ol' Mr. Jesus himself etc. etc. etc. I know people will not agree on whether some of these are good or bad things, but in this social media and privately-owned media influenced world it's easy to create tribes to pit them against each other for various purposes (often unknown to whoever joins the tribe). More tribes for positive change, yes, thank you. But this theory is not without it's flaws - if it is meant to sound all positive.

Transcend convention and the status quo by being true to yourself and in that way effect positive change. To paraphase George Bernard Shaw, the one considered unreasonable because he or she will not conform in every way, is the one who will bring progress to their world.
Just a minute before a quoted the unreasonable man on whom whole of the progress depends, forgetting it was G.B.Shaw who said it. Instead I thought it was G. Orwell. :) Thanks for reminder

Tribalism is more prone to being irrational and divisive if not used responsibly.

Tribes where one has next to no choice in joining it e.g. by birth, can be dangerous as they have strong commitment and their leaders can manipulate this for control esp. if views are contradictory to similar tribes which leads to conflict and as a Kenyan, cultural tribes springs to mind and more universally, religious ones. consciously chosen tribes however like a book club or fashion movement tend to be more benign and perhaps even socially beneficial in terms of connections than dangerous.

Isn't tribalism a darwinian way of saying which social ideas/cultures are better than others? Better in a sense of keeping and sustaining human survival, ie: building spaceships and what not to go to other planets as opposed to believing in creationism and that everything was created 6,000 years ago. Very different ideas, but obviously we know which one benefits everyone.
