  • 40 years on from setting the World Land Speed Record on October 4th 1983, this is the story of Thrust 2 from its humble beginnings to land speed glory.
In Part Three, the Thrust team pick up the pieces after crashing during a test run, flooding at Bonneville forces a change of venue and Richard Noble finally achieves his lifetime's ambition.
I'm very grateful to original Thrust 2 team member John Norris, who has provided previously unseen footage of the team and the car on the Black Rock Desert in 1983.
Thanks also to the Thrust 2 team members who agreed to interviews!

This book in particular has been a fantastic resource in my research for this video. If you want to know more detail about Thrust 2 than I could cover in a 28 minute video, Richard Noble tells the whole story here. Highly recommended!

Thanks for putting this together very heartening to see this from a time when it meant something to be British, we all new which way was up and Richard and the team gave two fingers to the rest of the world. Always seeing those films of the runs across the desert in 1983 really brought home what it was all about. It could have all gone so very different if the RAF hadn't have volunteered the rebuild! Hats off to all involved.

That aside, I've driven "only" up to a few mph beneath 200 and there are stages where you start to look further and further down the road. Your vision narrows and your mental processes speed up. Richard explained it perfectly... but at far far more serious speeds again.

Fantastic series and I enjoyed it beyond words. I remember when it was going on and the occasional blurbs in the news, but being way pre internet, not a lot of info. And of course you only would hear they failed or were succesful, nothing of the struggles involved ( at least here in the states). And on a tangental sidenote, as an old motorcycle desert racer, I have a special hate in my heart for the Sierra Club. Screw those assholes.

The irony hey, one of Thrust 2’s sponsors at the time was Leyland Trucks. A company that was world renowned for making the best trucks in the world but not so good at managing the manufacture of British cars when they merged their company with Britains iconic car marques. But at least Leyland Trucks was associated with a British success for the land speed record, instead of being a failure associated with the British car industry’s downfall. 🇬🇧

Good things happen to good people. Wish you guys could get that car with Sir Andy Green to the magic 1000 mph. Andy is probably the only man who could get it there. I hope somehow someway you give it another go at it.

Not only did RAF Binbrook rebuild the engine, they rebuilt it to a higher spec with more thrust. Which was probably ultimately necessary for getting the record.

Yes, despite the extra power and various modifications, it was a close thing.

300 to 500 is boring 😂😂😂😂 yeah i know he feeling, it happens alot on the M4 commute. Anything below 500 is tedious 😂😂😂😂. But i guess for a man who went way over 600 then anything slower simply doesnt get the pulse going and the adrenaline pumping.
Excellent channel. Love what youve covered. Ive learnt a lot about a subject that has fascinated me since going to Beaulieu motor museum on a school field trip back in the 70s or 80s and seeing Bluebird and the other land speed record breaking cars.

Thanks for watching! I was also inspired by visiting Beaulieu many years ago and seeing their LSR collection.

I remember when back at the beginning the media were taking the piss out of Richard's efforts, 'look at what this nutter is doing' they sure don't do that any more!
