I prefer a long bolt that can screw in, then use a grinder to grind the hex head to a point, once screwed in it doesnt even need epoxy and cuts the cost to about 14$
@Bill Johnson what do you mean? Its been a while so the exact type i used i dont recall off the top of my head but the bolts were 8-10 inches if memory serves and about 6 of it would screw in if using a ratchet to apply pressure. The handles i prefer have the metal guard at the bottom and arent threaded on the inside. My training partner used tent spikes and epoxy but my spears lasted way longer and had less fixing of bent tips required
I think I might be already hooked haha. I've signed up for SPRINT in July, BEAST in September and Stadium Series in October. My goal is to get my first Trifecta this year! I'm really excited.
How high off the ground should the hay targets be? Also, I bought all the stuff to make it but I don’t think the 10 inch nail is sharp enough to penetrate the hay target. Should I sharpen it?
Hay bales were what we used but we got the industrial size rolls of plastic wrap and wrapped the hay bales to keep them together then just added more layers once they got beat up to be able to constantly reuse for cheap
Great instructional video. Thanks for the demo.
You could also wrap the spike in electrical tape and friction fit it into a dowel with a hole drilled into it

Solid! Though I have no idea how to use or grinder or have one haha

Thanks. My first race is in June.
Thanks for this great video tutorial Derek! Aroo! See you on the course. God bless.
Thanks 👍 brother ! Just ran my first super ' MT, nxt year the beast!! Hopefully
Thanks for the video I was just thinking about building my own spears the other day
Jared Clark they're super easy to do and even cheaper if you buy the items in bulk! Can get them down to $10 a spear
Obstacle Activist Wow that is cheap, thanks for the tip!
Awesome video! I’m racing’s at Tuxedo this weekend.
Good luck! I'll be filming at goliathon
I tried making this for throwing practice, but somehow it always ends up in my fishing kayak
Awesome, thank you!
what's the diameter for both the spike and the wood stick?
I'm honestly not sure. It's just the standard rake handle and spike at home depot
Chicago SUPER June 23rd
It'll be my first Spartan race ever!
Nice! Be prepared to get hooked on racing!

I'll be at palmerton in July, the ultra in Killington, and citizens whenever that is. Say hello if you see me!
That would've been great! But I'm gonna be in the Illinois/Indiana area
If you buy an asphalt rake, all you need to do is cut the rake off and sharpen the metal tang
About how much are those?
comment your next spartan race for a chance to win this spear!

Where’d you get some hay at?
Awesome! Gonna make one!
Practice practice practice. One of the easiest obstacles to make and do at home
Also, what do you use to throw the spear into like for practice?
I use both a hay bale as well as an archery block target
I’m doing the virtual trifecta and then the virtual ultra!!!!
Dallas STADIUM Sprint!
Chrissi Shew Me too!
Where do u get the target material?
Hay bails you can find at most home improvement stores or local farmers. Archery targets also work well and are what is used for a stadium race
Obstacle Activist awesome, I appreciate your time 👍
