Very nice. I've been making cornices for every window. Was going great until I got to the 9 ft sliding door. It's on there but it's coming down so i can make some adjustments... yours looks very secure. And shallow. Love the back piece. Much easier than what I did. Ty
Awesome project, Jay and great timing as well. We started painting the dining room today and the 4x6 side-sliding window needed something to hide the blind. Then you post this and solve my problem. Thanks!
My father-in-law did something sort of like this, only he used "L" brackets to mount them to the wall- and made a dado cut in the back to place 1/4" plywood to make shelves to put decorations on. I plan on doing this over our vertical blinds to replace the ugly plastic cornice piece that came with them. They are made out of oak boards and stained to match the trim. Looks really sharp!
Well done! What I normally do for cutting a thin crown moldings with chopsaw: I have a 6 inch wide strip of 1/4 thick plywood and lay it on the chopsaw platform and pre-cut the plywood and leave it there with duct tape holding it down and one on the bottom it keep it from moving around so much. What's great about the platform is that I don't have to worry about losing control of my piece because of the uneven surface of the chopsaw platform. I don't have to rely on the laser to know where I'm cutting because I already have the pre-cut on the plywood as a reference of where the saw is going. The downside: each time I remove it, I have to repeat the process. That's why I have a lot of 5 or 6 inch 1/4 plywood strips stored only for this purpose.
I began my first one yesterday. I cannot wrap my brain around crown molding, made many mistakes yesterday. Thank god I found Oak crown for 20 cents a foot at a goodwill type of store..... I purchased lots for practice. Thanks for your video.
Good video and project. A sacrificial fence for cutting those angles on the molding would be a good addition to your jog collection. It makes having to sneak up on those lines a lot faster!
Great window treatment and excellent video presentation. I also REALLY like your sketch up presentations. You do them so effortlessly, a real joy to watch. I look forward to seeing more. Thanks for posting your work, I appreciate your efforts.
Thanks for this video, I've been wanting to do this in my master bedroom now I know how to do it. One thing I'll be changing though is the the 1 X 4 on the back, I'll make it a French cleat to hang this from the wall.
Given that you didn't make them go all the way to the ceiling, hanging them with a french cleat would also be a good idea. Easy removal for servicing the window. I did make mine go to the ceiling and much deeper as well - 6 or 7". I wanted to hide the curtain tops and rod. I wish my ceiling was level to pre-install the crown, but it wasn't. Nice looking boxes. Your home will look great having these.
That's what I was thinking as I was watching this, as well. A French cleat hanging system would make this a bit more practical. Regardless, awesome stuff.
Looks great. I have to agree with the comment about french cleats. Here in Vegas dust is a real problem, more so than anywhere I have lived. Being able to easily remove them for cleaning would be a bonus. Good to hear that someone of talent has trouble with molding. I screw it up all the time. Wood filler is my friend :)
When I first saw the cornice I thought it was far too deep but, in position, it looks perfect. It also looks a lot more expensive than it was. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Hey Jay That looks nice. good use of MDF You can Spackle the edges of mdf and they paint real well, also the nail holes. Great job Your home looks nice. Thanks Jay, Roland.
Hey Jay, Might I suggest that you consider making the backside (mounting side) of the bo a French cleat? It would make for an easy instal and removal should you need to get the blinds down for any reason of need to clean the windows. I am doing a slightly lower profile version than yours as I don't have a lot of room between the top of the window and the ceiling with existing crown molding. Great and very useful project!
You just don't see many cornices anymore. My grandparents and other older relatives had them in their homes back in the 40's 50's and 60's, and usually scalloped or covered with material to match the curtains and my wife had me make them for our's about 20 or so years ago, similar to yours, but of the many, many dozens of homes I've remodeled over the last 40 years, I can probably count on one hand how many I remember having them. Anyways, nice job.
Hi Jay, I'm a starter with wood. I watched a lot of your projects and I still don't know how you decide when is to use the pinner, and when is to use bolts and driller. Can you make a video explaining some basic stuff like that? Thanks a lot!
These would make interesting lights as well... A Led strip or similar inside of the Cornice, and the light reflects off of the curtains/shutters... Or a LED strip or Fluorescent tube on the top of the thing, shining light up...
Nice project. Idea: use a French cleat to hang it instead of reaching over top to install screws. It can then be easily removed for cleaning or to access the blinds for removal or cleaning.
Jay - thanks for the idea. I'm trying to think of some window coverings for my Man cave and i think this is a good idea. If anyone else has any ideas let me know.
Hey, that's neat, Jay. Looks great! Tell us how you like your new miter saw after you use it for a while. Anything new is bound to be better, but after you use it for sometime, there is always a quirk or two. Thanks
GREAT, I'M JUST A WOOD WORKING HOBBIST BUT USING THIS VIDEO I'LL DO MY HOUSE CORNICES, I GOT MA QUESTION FOR YOU , WHAT DO YOU USE FOR ANCHORING THE CORNICE TO THE WALL?
Go all the way and put crown molding in the bedroom. It will really dress it up. I have done all 8 rooms in my house. A lot of work but well worth it for the way it sets the rooms off. They look elegant.
Nice job! Here's an idea which probably merits the trash bin, but I'll say it anyway...hang your cornice box using french cleats. Then you can swap them out for differently-crafted ones to match whatever seasonal decorations you have in your home.
It looks good and you did a great job. But printable caulk is not the right choice for filling the holes. The caulk will shrink over time and leave unsightly dimples in the project.
Question. How did you decide on the measurements for the cornice? How many inches beyond the window? Also, explain how you mounted the box. Thanks. Nice work.
I chose a dimension that I thought looked nice. Look at magazines or google images for examples and compare to your space. I screwed through the back piece of the cornice on an angle to hit the studs on each side of the window.
I love this project, I was a little skeptical at the beginning but once I saw in hung on the wall I thought it looked great! I also love the filming in this video, keep that up. I noticed your new saw, I have the smaller 10 inch sliding model and I love mine, did the kobalt not work out? Finally I also noticed your dust collection system and the cyclone, I love that too! Thanks for the great video!
good job.. but you should cap the top if you have curtains (drapes) as it will help stop the up and down draft along the window.. (put your hand at the bottom of the curtain when its cold outside and you'll see what i mean
Just watching some old videos. Wow how far you've come. Awesome!
Nice work Jay, looks great

Looks awesome! Makes a boring window look more expensive. Looks pretty simple too.
Yay! Thank you for this! Thank you, also, for not including unnecessary "filler" talking. I love videos that just "get to it."
Looks wonderful Jay. Great project.

Really enjoyed how you built this whole unit...Excellent job! Best woodworking projects Ive come across this place in a while!
You make it look so easy! Inspred to try it myself thanks to your video.
Looks like you got a new miter saw, I'm sure you make great use of it!
Well done! Looks beautiful mounted in the house....looked good in the shop to!
Great job as usual.
It certainly highlights the window and gives it a bit more character.
Great looking cornice! And I see you've got some new toys. Cool.
I began my first one yesterday. I cannot wrap my brain around crown molding, made many mistakes yesterday. Thank god I found Oak crown for 20 cents a foot at a goodwill type of store..... I purchased lots for practice. Thanks for your video.
Thanks Jay - was going to do an average fabric covered cornice but this will look great in my Victorian terraced house.
Those look really great. Amazing what a difference they make. Very classy looking. I may steal this idea for around our house. Thanks for posting.

Nice, Clean & Simple.

ooops, should have read your post before I made mine.
That's what I was thinking as I was watching this, as well. A French cleat hanging system would make this a bit more practical. Regardless, awesome stuff.
Nice work Jay. Looks like it grew there.
This is exactly what I want for my living room. I so wish I had the tools & skills to make them myself.
Duuuuude, you have me thinking I could do this...but I might lose fingers. That came out so beautiful!
Wow I subbed to you last night and I can't stop watching your videos. Dude keep up the great work and easy to follow videos. Thumbs up
Nice job....if you wider than one use a french cleat.....You will be glad you did when repaint time comes.
Nice add on to spruce up a room, Looks Great
Another cool project Jay - looks like you have to be very careful when brading nailing the moulding to prevent splitting.
When I first saw the cornice I thought it was far too deep but, in position, it looks perfect. It also looks a lot more expensive than it was.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
Wow!Great job jay!!Love the clean elegant look!!Love the new saw btw!
Great video and awesome filming. Educational and entertaining to watch. Thanks!
Nice job Jay! My wife wants me to do the same to our MBR windows.
Looks great, very elegant.

Great project idea Jay
Never thought of the MDF.. Good idea. Thanks again
Looks beautiful.
That thing looks great. Nice job!
Great video! You did a wonderful job of explaining each step!!
Cool project Jay, my office could do with something like that for sure.
You just don't see many cornices anymore. Buen proyecto anexado a mi lista de pendientes
Nicely done. Looks great.
That's pretty cool for scraps, I'll try that sometime.

Thanks a lot!
Thank you, I will also take on this task, to cover the rail of a barn door installed in the main living area of my home.
That would be perfect for the inside of my front entrance. Thank you so much for sharing.
They look great. How are they hung on the wall?
These would make interesting lights as well... A Led strip or similar inside of the Cornice, and the light reflects off of the curtains/shutters... Or a LED strip or Fluorescent tube on the top of the thing, shining light up...
Thanks Jay for this, now I got some work for my husband Jay :)
+Babylove Queen Good luck!
Very nice work Jay
***** Thanks!
Welcome, keep up the great work.
Nice project. Idea: use a French cleat to hang it instead of reaching over top to install screws. It can then be easily removed for cleaning or to access the blinds for removal or cleaning.
Thanks for this no-nonsense video. I loved it❤
Great work! Looks GOOD!
Great project Jay. I like it and i'm waiting for new one.
I love this I wish I could get some made by you. Your work is awesome
Looks like the new miter saw payed off cutting those angles, old blue might have let you down haha.
Jay - thanks for the idea. I'm trying to think of some window coverings for my Man cave and i think this is a good idea. If anyone else has any ideas let me know.
so beautiful
Glad my wife didn't see this. Looks like the Rigid saw cuts pretty nice! You happy with it?
Beautiful job!
Great video! Looks great.
nice job jay
Jay you seem like a really cool dude, Thanks for the video
As always a great video... So why didn't you show how you cut the crown molding? hehehe
Hey, that's neat, Jay. Looks great! Tell us how you like your new miter saw after you use it for a while. Anything new is bound to be better, but after you use it for sometime, there is always a quirk or two. Thanks
Thank you for sharing very nice work!!👍👍👍
I loved ur work with scroll

Fantastic job! Is there a thinner wood that we can use? Most of us women that want to make it, are looking for a material that would be lite weight.
Looks good, wish you would have shown how you hung it
Very well done and helpful. Thanks.
Thanks Jay, you got my wheels turning. Great video, heck I didn’t even mind your music. 😂
Nice job! Here's an idea which probably merits the trash bin, but I'll say it anyway...hang your cornice box using french cleats. Then you can swap them out for differently-crafted ones to match whatever seasonal decorations you have in your home.
Very cool project! This is definitely going on my to do list. Thanks Jay!
Thanks for the inspiration. I made two for my foyer.
Very nice Job there Jay !
Just beautiful! Thanks for the inspiration!
Could you french cleat the rear support ... just a thought.
Very nice, looks good keep up the good work !!!!
How are you liking the new chop saw?
Great job, Would love to learn how to do this!
cool jay looks great
very nice and tidy!!!
I want to do something similar to this but with dimmable LED lighting on the top. That would be great for indirect lighting.
Looks good
I have been looking for something like this! Thanks for posting it.
It looks good and you did a great job. But printable caulk is not the right choice for filling the holes. The caulk will shrink over time and leave unsightly dimples in the project.
Looks great. Go Redwings!

How do you angle the crown molding on the saw to cut it? I can do everything but crown molding when it comes to trim!
Nice work
I love this project, I was a little skeptical at the beginning but once I saw in hung on the wall I thought it looked great! I also love the filming in this video, keep that up. I noticed your new saw, I have the smaller 10 inch sliding model and I love mine, did the kobalt not work out? Finally I also noticed your dust collection system and the cyclone, I love that too! Looks great. Different kind of music for your videos.
good job.. but you should cap the top if you have curtains (drapes) as it will help stop the up and down draft along the window.. (put your hand at the bottom of the curtain when its cold outside and you'll see what i mean
